DiY Macro Flash, very temp wiring to see if one control unit can fire 2 flash bulbs, the flash heads are fitted to a cut down petal hood by a small ball head. Cost at time of shot US$30!!!
Sophie and I rose before sunrise and decided that playing with off-camera flash in a 30°F windblown field would be a good way to watch the day begin.
Our results were pretty awful, as you can see in this photo, which was the best of our shoot. I have so much to learn about off-camera lighting.
But the possibilities...oh, the possibilities. :-)
The inset shows my setup: my new SB-800 on a small stand, triggered by my D200 in commander mode, with the D200's internal flash "turned off" (that is, used only to trigger the SB800).
Now we're ready for a nap.

Basada en la historia real de Robert Kearns (Greg Kinnear), profesor de universidad e inventor en sus ratos libres, que libró una larga y dura batalla contra la industria automovilística, "Flash of genius" cuenta la historia de un hombre que pagó un precio muy alto para que su invento fuera reconocido. Este testarudo ingeniero rehusó callarse y se enfrentó a los titanes de las corporaciones a pesar de que nadie creía que pudiese salir vencedor. Los Kearns eran una típica familia de Detroit que en los años sesenta vivía su versión del sueño americano. Bob, profesor en la universidad local, se casó con Phyllis (Lauren Graham) y tuvieron seis hijos antes de cumplir los cuarenta. Su vida no era fácil, pero se sentían felices. Bob inventó un aparato que llegaría a instalarse en todos los coches del mundo occidental, y los Kearns creyeron haber descubierto un filón de oro. Pero sus esperanzas se quedaron en agua de borrajas cuando los gigantes del automóvil, que tanto habían celebrado el invento de Bob, le hicieron a un lado.

Sorry for the strange file name, that's what I saved it as and I can't think of anything else.
ANYWAY. Why have I never used a flash gun properly before?! I was doing some multiple flash work, which didn't go to well, because I couldn't be bothered to use a tripod, and it wasn't as dark as I'd have liked it to be. But I got bored of multiple flash half way through and I thought this looked REALLY pretty. Plus we've had a bit of a self portrait over load lately. So heres something that.. Isn't me.
Anyway, so I'm currently using a flash gun that my grandad used to use. It is sort of weird using a flash gun thats OLDER than I am. But I'll live. It sucks cos I can't connect it in properly otherwise you only get the one flash and the built in flash still tries to pop up as well. Ah well. Hopefully someone will buy me a more up to date one at some point.

Decided to make a quick and dirty cardboard flash diffuser. Then I decided to just go all the way and make different comparisons.
- Homemade cardboard, head 45 degrees
- Nothing, head 90 d (towards white ceiling)
- Integrated lid pulled out but not folded back onto the head, head 45 d
- Nothing, head 45 d
- Nothing, head 0 d (straight ahead)
- Stofen diffuser, head 0 d
- Nothing, head 0 d
- Stofen, head 0 d
Clearly, ceiling bounce is the best.
The stofen does not bad a job, but adds a lot of warmth (which is neither good or bad I guess, depends what you're looking for)
My cheapo diffuser beats the rest.
It would be a whole different story outside though.

Strobist: SB-600 1/2 power through Lastolite Ezybox Horseshoe high camera left. SB-25 1/2 power through 24" white shoot-thru, very low camera right, trying to bring some light to the red shoes. Fired by CTR-301P's
Full power is WAY too long. You can see here that the pulse lasts 8.2ms or 1/125th of a second! that's slow!

Thought it would make an interesting comparison, to show the same shot as yesterday, using a different lighting setup.
Rather than the continuous light and difussion screen, this was taken with flash and a shoot thru umbrella, the difussion screen was nowhere near as effective with flash.
The umbrella was in pretty close and at the same height as the subject, only just out of frame to the camera right , to give as large a light source as possible.
For those that like the technical details, the flash was a Yongnuo YN460 set at 1/2 power and fitted with a Stofen type difusser and fired via a Blazzeo SLT-4 radio trigger.
I was quite surprised how much more defined the reflections were, considering it was a much larger light source, but at least the colour balance is better :)
