The first time we were in here, 15 years ago, Battambang was just a sleepy backwater in western Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge had only pulled out of the town five years before, infrastructure was basic, and the road to the Thai border was infernal. Still recovering from the atrocities of that period, Battambang looked a lot like it did when it was a colonial French outpost. In 1996, a group of survivors from the refugee camps, along with their French drawing teacher, formed a group to help children deal with their trauma through art. Their organization, Phare Ponleu Selpak, "the brightness of the arts", has grown into a campus which supports a school for 1000 local children, as well as departments for visual and performing arts. It is best know, however, for its circus school, which stages popular shows which fund the NGO.
All the shows are choreographed and performed by PPS students, and are of such a high caliber that the circus now has an international touring season. There is no better place to see them, however, than in the "big tent" on their home turf in a suburb of Battambang. The walls of the tent are open, letting in fresh tropical night air and the chirping of cicadas, and the crowd - mostly foreigners, but also locals and school groups - are already won over. With an orchestra of gamelan-like percussion behind them, the jugglers and acrobats can do no wrong, and have fun playing to the receptive home crowd. It's a memorable experience, by any measure.
The light is low in the tent, and any photography has to be at a high ISO. I was shooting at 6400, trying to get a fast enough shutter speed with a narrow aperture. Fortunately in this shot the acrobat stayed fairly still, allowing the definition of his muscles to be as sharp as possible. The orchestra musicians were also extremely photogenic, and I like the tension between the convoluted male torso and the beautiful young woman out of focus in the background.

First time didn't work so well but it's still cool. I like the line of clouds over the edge of the field and hills beyond.

First time I’ve seen this species in my garden. I’m very pleased to see them and hope they come back. 😊
First time visiting Mote Park in Maidstone, and found an area with masses of fungi on rotting logs.
Some logs were absolutely covered with layers of this golden fungus, and if you zoom in you can see it deserves its name: hairy curtain crust.

Yes really. I got to the age of 33 without wearing stockings. Until a certain friend pointed out how ridiculous that was, and lent me theirs. The friend took the photo :)
Another picture from my recently rediscovered archives charting my cross-dressing progress.
This picture is rather special as it was the first time I ever ventured outdoors dressed up as a woman. It was late in the afternoon on a cold February day back in 2002 and I felt on an incredible emotional high. I can still recall it now over a decade later!
I attended a transvestite social evening at 'Hide & Sleek' in Fife, Scotland. It was the first time I traveled as a woman for a few hours and actually met others who like me feel an inner desire to dress and spend time as women. I was still inept at applying makeup, wigs and trying to get a female look but I was very excited at finally escaping my repressed dreams of cross-dressing.
New York’s Park Avenue tunnel was opened to pedestrians Saturday — three Saturdays in a row, actually: August 3, 10 and 17. Summer Streets made Park Avenue pedestrian only, 7am to 1pm, from Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, and in the tunnel Rafael Lozano-Hemmer showed his Voice Tunnel work to the eager masses, who lined up across three blocks to enter the tunnel and enjoy — or at least photograph and/or film — the event...
It was the first time,
it was the beginning...
my heart was exciting,
eveything was new,
everything was waiting for me and I was looking for everything...
6 months where I was one of the most happiest person in the world.
Love Vancity!!!
This is also a first time post of this house right here in our county. Cartnal's owned it in 1878 and 1915. One of the last cemetries that I found in Clark County out of 138, was hidden here at the edge of the woods. It was a single stone leaning agianst a tree. Sarah Mc Artor died at 29 years old in 1866. The stone also tells, "Also 3 infant children." You can only imagine the grief that these old houses have witnessed.
I just realised that this is my 700th post.
Multiple Exposure
I would have done more but my battery died and I was away from my back-up.

This is the first time I've had the opportunity to photograph this fine looking AEC ’Regent' III with Park Royal body dating from about 1950, these vehicles were a familiar sight in Morecambe until the 1970s. This example is pictured at the Keighley Bus Museum, West Yorkshire, 24-04-2016.
I've been doing this railfanning thing, since, basically, 1983. Since then I've railfanned, to some degree, in three different continents and this was the first time I've ever photographed an electric-powered freight train.
The Deseret Power Railway is a 35-mile long conveyor belt of sorts on the upper UT/CO border. Owned by Blue Mountain Energy, this railroad has no outside connections and has but one purpose: to move coal from BME's Deserado Mine in Colorado to the Generating Station near Bonanza, UT.
Here, we catch the morning loaded train as it grinds out of the loadout towards Holum Pass with DPR-2, one of two units originally built for the line, leading two former Mexican cousins.
The first time I've been able to successfully photograph a Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita), here singing its characteristic and onomatopoeic call.
First time working with batiks.
Just bought the fabrics and made my own jelly roll from 16 prints, 1/4yd each, 3 strips/color - not bad!
I love the texture, the colors and all the prints.
Next step, the pattern for the quilt? - once again, so hard to make a choice.
Feeling very portrait'ish this week. So am going to post some recent portraits that I have taken.
This is Mohini, an aspiring model. She was a bit chubby, but thankfully not shy!

I went to the For the First Time in Forever Frozen Sing-Along at Disney's Hollywood Studios because I had never been before. Although I'm not quite as enamored with Frozen as some are, it was really well done.
