Found some old hard drives again and remembered spending a few days in the Bisti Badlands of Northwest New Mexico around this time a number of years ago.
Habe mal wieder in alten Festplatten gestöbert und erinnerte mich, dass ich vor etlichen Jahren um diese Zeit einige Tage in den Bisti Badlands im Nordwesten von New Mexiko verbracht habe.
Little-known rock arch in the evening sun. It is located in the western part of the VoF near Loop Road, but a bit hidden in the maze of rocks.
Wenig bekannter Felsbogen in der Abendsonne. Er befindet sich im westlichen Teil des VoF nahe der Loop Road, aber etwas versteckt im Felsgewirr.

This photo gives you a good overview over Berlin's Government district, all the major governmental buildings in this area are visible in my photo, including the Reichstag building (the seat of the German government) with Norman Foster's famous, newly designed dome on the left, and the Bundeskanzleramt (German Chancellery) which you can see on the right (behind the Swiss embassy), and a few other governmental buildings, plus several Berlin landmarks. I might still add a few photo comments tomorrow, but for now I don't want to clutter the photo with lots of photo comments. I've added the names of some of the buildings, sights, and places in the tags (from left to right to front). For more images of the Governmental district, please see my album.
Image photoGRIIIphed from the rooftop of the Futurium, the so called "Skywalk". It had been a very bright and sunny day (as you can see), and I couldn't see a thing on the Ricoh's screen, so I was glad I had the, albeit merely optical, viewfinder mounted. This photo also wasn't intended as a panorama at all. As I was leaning onto the roof's balustrade, I was following the boat with the camera. Later, when I viewed the two final images, I thought that maybe I could combine them for a panoramic view. While I didn't really succeed in doing that manually, the panorama photomerge function in LR did an amazing job here, down to the use of only the boat in the left position (it had been in both images). Technically, this final image is a combination of, altogether, 8 single images: two HDR images made of 2 exposure bracketing series consisting of three images each (which I'd combined in HDR Efex), and the two final HDR images merged in LR.

Die Wahl zum 20. Deutschen Bundestag ist gelaufen, aber es bleibt weiter spannend. Hier ein Foto, dass ich im Juli vom Dach des Futuriums, dem sog. Skywalk, aufgenommen habe. Ihr habt hier einen guten Überblick nicht nur über das Berliner Regierungsviertel, sondern es sind am Horizont auch einige Sehenswürdigkeiten zu entdecken. Ein paar der wichtigsten Gebäude, Plätze und Sehenwürdigkeiten habe ich, von links nach rechts nach vorn, in den Tags genannt. Ich hatte erst auch an Fotokommentare gedacht, möchte das Bild damit aber nicht zukleistern (denn es würden tatsächlich sehr viele Bildkommentare werden), weshalb ich darauf erst einmal verzichte.
Das Foto ist ein Panorama aus zwei Fotos, die ich mit der Ricoh GR III gemacht habe. Eigentlich hatte ich vor Ort gar nicht an ein Panorama gedacht, weil es auf dem Skywalk so sonnig und hell gewesen war, dass ich auf dem Display der GR III sowieso nichts erkennen konnte (wie gut, dass es den, wenngleich rein optischen, Aufstecksucher gibt, der in solchen Situation wirklich Gold wert ist), sodass an eine saubere Panorama-Komposition auch überhaupt nicht zu denken gewesen wäre. Ich hatte mit der Kamera lediglich den Ausflugsdampfer verfolgt und zwei 3er-Belichtungsreihen von unterschiedlichen Positionen des Schiffes (einmal links, so wie im fertigen Panorama zu sehen, und einmal mittig rechts) gemacht, wobei die Dachbalustrade im Vordergrund ein gutes Behelfsstativ abgegeben hatte. Der Gedanke, zu versuchen, die beiden fertigen HDRs (Programm der Wahl: HDR Efex) zu einen Panorama zusammenzufügen, kam mir dann auch erst später. Manuell wollte es nicht klappen, aber die "Zusammenfügen: Panorama"-Funktion in LR hat ganze Arbeit geleistet, LR hat mir beim Zusammenfügen sogar das nur angeschnitten sichtbare Schiff vom 2. Foto automatisch entfernt – sehr praktisch :)

Waldohreule (Asio otus) - (northern) long-eared owl

Die Waldohreule (Asio otus) ist eine Vogelart, die zu den Eigentlichen Eulen (Strigidae) gehört. Sie ist eine der häufigsten Eulen in Mitteleuropa.
Aussehen
Die Waldohreule hat mit einer Körperlänge von etwa 36 cm und einer Flügelspannweite von 95 cm etwa die Größe eines Waldkauzes. Sie ist jedoch wesentlich schlanker als der Waldkauz und mit einem Gewicht von 220 bis 280 Gramm (Männchen) bzw. 250 bis 370 Gramm (Weibchen) erheblich leichter. Auffallende, große Federohren kennzeichnen diese Art. Die Federohren haben keine Funktion im Zusammenhang mit der Hörleistung der Eule. Zur Verstärkung der Hörleistung dient vielmehr der bei der Waldohreule auffällige Gesichtsschleier. Die Iris der Waldohreule ist leuchtend orangegelb. Das Gesicht wird durch eine auffällig hervorstehende Stirnbefiederung geteilt. Die Flügel sind relativ schmal. Das Gefieder der Waldohreule ist auf hellbraunem bis ockergelbem Grund schwarzbraun gestrichelt und gefleckt. Die Hand- und Armschwingen sind deutlich dunkel quergebändert. Allgemein überwiegen bei den Weibchen dunkle, rostbraune Farbtöne. Die Männchen sind dagegen in ihrer Grundfärbung etwas heller. Die Färbung des Gefieders dient der Tarnung; ruhende Vögel im Geäst sind kaum zu entdecken. Die Augen werden durch ein oberes und ein unteres Augenlid sowie durch eine Nickhaut, die das Auge bedecken kann, geschützt.

Description

The ear-tufts are used to make the owl appear larger to other owls while perched. The female is larger in size and darker in colouration than the male. The long-eared owl's brownish feathers are vertically streaked. Tarsus and toes are entirely feathered. Eye disks are also characteristic in this species. However, the eye disks of A. otus are darker in colour or rusty-orange. This nocturnal species is perhaps most easily seen perched in a tree in its daytime roost, sometimes in small groups during the winter months. There are about six thousand long eared owls in the United States, and fifty thousand in the whole world.

When I drove past there in the afternoon to find the best location for the next morning, a brief thunderstorm was just sweeping the landscape and then I was even enjoying a small rainbow.

Als ich nachmittags dort vorbei fuhr, um den besten Standort für den kommenden Morgen zu finden, zog gerade ein kurzes Gewitter über die Landschaft und anschliessend erfreute ich mich sogar an einem kleinen Regenbogen.

Berlin, in direkter Sichtweite zum Fernsehturm und der St. Marienkirche muss man sich Zeit nehmen um alles zu entdecken und genau hinsehen was alles am Neptuns Brunnen ist. Welche Tiere und Fabelwesen sind alles da und welche speien Wasser.

A hike through the forest is always a wonderful experience in itself. No matter what time of day, what time of year and what weather.
When the low sun shines through the trees in the morning or evening hours, it becomes really magical. Then the atmosphere changes fundamentally.
And as I move through the forest and the sun moves towards the horizon, it changes again and again. It's so thrilling and exciting because you never know what effect you'll discover around the next bend or tree.
Eine Wanderung durch den Wald ist ja an sich schon jedesmal ein wunderschönes Erlebnis. Ganz gleich zu welcher Tageszeit, zu welcher Jahreszeit und bei welchem Wetter.
Wenn dann in den Morgen- oder Abendstunden noch die tief stehende Sonne durch die Bäume scheint wird es richtig magisch. Dann verändert sich die Atmosphäre grundlegend.
Und während ich mich durch den Wald bewege und die Sonne Richtung Horizont wandert verändert sie sich immer und immer wieder. Das ist so spannend und aufregend, denn man weiß nie vorher, welchen Effekt man hinter der nächsten Kurve oder dem nächsten Baum wohl entdecken wird.

Whenever I look at this photo, it makes me think of my favorite book series. The Story of Roland and the Dark Tower by Stephen King.
It is about the search for a (of course) dark tower that reaches up to the sky and stabilizes all worlds.
Surrounding this tower is a field of crimson roses, stretching out to the horizon in all directions.
Of course I know that these are poppies and not roses. But I am happy when I look at the picture and am visited by Roland and his world, after all he was the hero of my youth. And when I think about it, he still is.
So, with my Monday flower greeting, I'm adding an invitation to all of you to take the time to remember the heroes of your childhood and youth. Perhaps one or the other insight will come along, which of their special qualities or abilities you can perhaps already discover in yourself.
Wenn ich mir dieses Foto ansehe, muss ich jedes Mal an meine lieblings Buchreihe denken. Die Geschichte von Roland und dem dunklen Turm von Stephen King.
Sie handelt von der Suche nach einem (na klar) dunklen Turm der bis in den Himmel reicht und alle Welten stabilisiert.
Um diesen Turm herum gibt es ein Feld aus blutroten Rosen, welches sich in alle Richtungen bis zum Horizont erstreckt.
Natürlich weiss ich, dass dies hier Mohnblumen und keine Rosen sind. Doch ich freue mich, wenn ich das Bild anschaue und dadurch von Roland und seiner Welt besucht werde, schließlich war er der Held meiner Jugend. Und wenn ich mal genauer darüber nachdenke, so ist er dass noch immer.
So verknüpfe ich mit meinem montäglichen Blumengruß heute die Einladung an Euch alle, Euch doch einmal die Zeit zu nehmen um Euch an die Helden Eurer Kindheit und Jugend zu erinnern. Vielleicht kommt dabei die ein oder andere Erkenntnis, welche ihrer besonderen Eigenschaften oder Fähigkeiten Ihr vielleicht jetzt schon in Euch selbst entdecken könnt.

Here is the photo I had planned for yesterday.
Maybe you still recognize the area. The photo was also taken at my favorite place on the small mt. Winterberg in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. But this time my favorite pine is not in the picture. This is further to the right. And while the tree in question is the focus of every visitor (I alone have photographed it umpteen times), the trees next to it are hardly noticed. So they are not only on the edge of the rock but also on the edge of perception.
This feels a bit like we're at a party or a family reunion. There is always someone in the center who draws everyone's attention while others remain quite inconspicuous in the background. But maybe it would be interesting to turn to them in order to learn more about them. I believe what there is to discover would surprise us all.
Hier kommt nun das Foto, was ich für gestern schon geplant hatte.
Vielleicht erkennt Ihr ja die Gegend noch. Das Foto entstand ebenfalls an meinem Lieblingsort auf dem kleinen Winterberg im Elbsandsteingebirge. Doch dieses Mal ist meine Lieblingskiefer nicht im Bild. Diese steht weiter rechts. Und während der besagte Baum im Fokus jedes Besuchers steht (ich allein hab ihn schon x mal fotografiert) werden die Bäume daneben kaum wahrgenommen. Somit sind sie nicht nur am Rand des Felsens sondern auch am Rand der Wahrnehmung.
Das fühlt sich ein bisschen an, als wären wir auf einer Party oder einem Familientreffen. Da gibt es immer jemanden im Mittelpunkt, der alle Aufmerksamkeit auf sich lenkt, während andere ganz unscheinbar im Hintergrund bleiben. Doch vielleicht wäre es interessant sich gerade diesen einmal zuzuwenden um mehr über sie zu erfahren. Ich glaube, was es dort alles zu entdecken gibt würde uns alle überraschen.

Buschwindröschen - windflower (Anemone nemorosa)
Not everyone needs to ablaze it’s magnificence and grandeur (even if it’s only imagined) above everything and everyone else. Some are shining quite in obscurity. You have to look out to discover that beauty and it’s worth the effort, absolutely. Here we have, for example, a windflowers. Lots of them are blooming right now in our forests. A view to kneel down (otherwise you couldn’t photograph it by the way because it’s a tiny plant). Everywhere around us we can find such hidden beauties, and not only flowers. We just need to be willing to have a look.
Nicht jeder hat das Bedürfnis all seine Pracht und Herrlichkeit (auch wenn’s nur die eingebildete ist) über allen und allem erstrahlen zu lassen. Manch einer oder eine leuchtet ganz im Verborgen. Du musst schon danach Ausschau halten um die Schönheit zu entdecken, und es ist den Aufwand wert, absolut. Hier haben wir zum Beispiel ein Buschwindröschen von denen gerade sehr viele in den Wäldern in voller Blüte stehen. Ein Anblick zum niederknien, finde ich (sonst kann man es ja auch nicht fotografieren, denn es ist eine ziemlich kleine Pflanze). Überall um uns herum können wir versteckte Schönheiten finden, nicht nur unter den Blumen. Wir müssen nur hinsehen wollen.
Jeden Winter faszinieren mich diese Skulpturen aus Eis, die in Bächen und Flüssen entstehen! In diesen Momenten gibt es so viel zu entdecken :-) Da bin ich mit meinen Gedanken so im Element, dass ich gar nicht merke wie kalt es ist! Also ich vergesse zu frieren :-)

Every winter I am fascinated by these sculptures of ice, created in streams and rivers! There is so much to discover in these moments :-) Since I'm so in the element with my thoughts that I do not even notice how cold it is! So I forget to freeze :-)

I'm looking out of the window and I’m thinking: "Some sun would be not bad at the moment". Because I can’t discover anything like that, I'm taking a look on my computer. Lo and behold what is beaming at me instantly ? A beautiful water lily warming itself in the sun and reflecting in the lake. Perfect choise.
Ich schaue aus dem Fenster und denke mir: "Etwas Sonne wäre jetzt nicht schecht". Da ich dort nichts dergleichen entdecken kann schaue ich mal auf meinem Computer nach. Siehe da, was strahlt mich da sofort an ? Eine wunderschöne Seerose, die sich in der Sonne wärmt und im See spiegelt. Perfekte Auswahl.

Why should someone freely stand up at 4 o clock in the morning during his holidays ? That why ! I rarely witnessed a sunrise what flabbergasted me as much as this one here at Ponta da Piedade in Portugal.
It was still quite dark here, as I arrived and in the light of my headlamp I could only surmise what was waiting for me. As brighter as it became as more breathtaking became the scenery around me. I was all on my own here in this magical surroundings for at least three hours. What a moving experience.
This place is so amazing, that I could spend a week only here and for sure I would find something new to explore every day.
But it were only a sunrise and a sunset though and what I discovered, You will see during the next days.
Warum sollte irgend jemand freiwillig in seinem Urlaub vier Uhr morgens aufstehen ? Darum !
Ich habe nur selten einen Sonnenaufgang erlebt, der mich so von den Socken gehauen hat wie dieser hier am Ponta da Piedade in Portugal.
Als ich ankam war es noch ziemlich dunkel und ich konnte im Schein meiner Stirnlampe nur erahnen, was mich erwartet. Je heller es dann wurde um so atemberaubender wurde die Kulisse um mich herum. Ich war mindestens drei Stunden ganz allein hier in dieser magischen Umgebung. Was für ein ergreifendes Erlebnis.
Dieser Platz ist so umwerfend, dass ich hier allein eine Woche verbringen könnte und ich würde mit Sicherheit jeden Tag etwas neues entdecken.
So waren es jedoch nur ein Sonnenauf- und ein -untergang und was ich entdeckt habe, seht Ihr in den nächsten Tagen.

Die Rothalsgans ist bei uns eine Ausnahmeerscheinung und nur als vereinzelter Durchzügler zusammen mit Weißwangen- oder Blässgänsen zu entdecken.

In order to get a better overview of these so-called "brain rocks", I climbed onto an adjacent rocky mountain (it's name is "Teepee Dome"). From there you also have a perfect view towards Coyote Buttes North (The Wave).

It is always an experience to discover a small tawny owl. The little one is around a month old.
Die Töne sind unterschiedlich laut und sehr variationsreich. Sein Schnabel bewegt sich dabei nicht viel und er wirkt so fast wie ein Bauchredner. Dies gipfelt in seiner Fähigkeit, andere Vogelstimmen oder Umgebungsgeräusche perfekt zu imitieren und in seinen Gesang einzubauen. So blickt sich mancher in der Stadt nach einer Kohlmeise, Polizeisirene oder sogar einem Handyklingeln um und kann nichts dergleichen entdecken – bis auf einen Star im Baum.

In the west-facing pine forests of the "Parque National de Cumbre Vieja" near the San Juan volcano, the spring bloom was at its peak. Great to hike there.
The black pine trunks come from forest fires, which apparently don't bother the trees much, because they sprout again shortly after the fire.

In den nach Westen ausgerichteten Kiefernwäldern des "Parque National de Cumbre Vieja" in der Nähe des Vulkans San Juan war die Frühlingsblüte auf ihrem Höhepunkt. Herrlich, dort zu wandern.
Die schwarzen Kiefernstämme rühren von Waldbränden, die den Bäumen offenbar nicht viel ausmachen, denn sie treiben kurz nach dem Feuer wieder neu aus.

Während eines von mehreren Besuchen der Coyote Buttes South (Permit-Bereich) mit ausgedehnter Wanderung zur Erkundung der Vielfalt dieser Ausnahmelandschaft.
Foggy morning in the "Schrammsteine": after sunrise, the fog rose a little higher than before and bathed the Kirnitzsch-Valley in this golden light. On such days you are never alone at the hotspots in Saxon Switzerland, you can spot photographers in almost all known places, or only early risers who want to enjoy the wonderful morning atmosphere - like here on the "Split Cone" in the foreground.
Nebelmorgen in den Schrammsteinen: Nach dem Sonnenaufgang stieg der Nebel noch etwas höher als vorher und tauchte das Kirnitzschtal in dieses goldene Licht. An solchen Tagen ist man niemals allein an den Hotspots in der Sächsischen Schweiz, fast an allen bekannten Stellen kann man Fotografen entdecken, oder nur Frühaufsteher, die die herrliche Morgenstimmung geniesen wollen - so wie hier auf dem "Gespaltenen Kegel" im Vordergrund.

I love the spring. In that season, when nature is rebooting all of their systems, every day is a journey of discovery. Permanently, the look of the plants around me is chanching. Every day I can discover something new. I made this photo three times during one week, because I liked the look of this blossom more every time then the version I shot before.
Ich liebe den Frühling. In dieser Jahreszeit, wenn die Natur alle ihre Systeme wieder hoch fährt, ist jeder Tag eine Entdeckungsreise. Ständig ändert sich der Anblick der Pflanzen um mich herum. Jeden Tag kann ich etwas neues entdecken. Dieses Foto hier habe ich innerhalb einer Woche dreimal gemacht, weil mir der Anblick dieser Blüte jedesmal besser gefallen hat als die Version, die ich zuvor fotografiert habe.

The rock tomb Ed-Deir, translated monastery, stands outside the actual ancient city of Petra. In the Middle Ages, monks are said to have settled there. In the background right you can see parts of the (tourist) city Wadi-Musa.
Das Felsgrab Ed-Deir, übersetzt Kloster, steht außerhalb der eigentlichen antiken Stadt Petra. Im Mittelalter sollen sich darin Mönche niedergelassen haben. Im Hintergrund rechts erkennt man Teile der (Touristen-)Stadt Wadi-Musa.
