East Broad Top Engine #15 pulls a train of tourists into Orbisonia, Pa. Founded in 1856, the East Broad Top began as one of many narrow gauge railways carrying lumber, ore, coal, and passengers between Mount Union and Woodvale for several decades. By 1956, the EBT was the last operating narrow gauge steam line east of the Rocky Mountains. The railroad was forced to shut down that same year due to slumping coal demand and competition from roadways. However, the Kovalchick Salvage Company of Indiana, Pa., purchased the EBT and president Nick Kovalchick and his family chose to preserve the railway for future generations. In 1960, the Kovalchicks operated their first tourist train after much hard work and dedication by volunteers and former employees. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, the EBT is also the most complete historic railroad site in North America. In 1914, EBT bought a third mikado. No. 15 is capable of hauling 18 loaded hoppers from the mines. #15 came back to service in September 2005 after a four-year overhaul. Orbisonia, Pa. 23 August 2009
34046 'Braunton' (currently running as 'Lord Dowding' runs tender first towards Bearley Junction, en-route to Tyseley Locomotive Works to be serviced and turned. The Bullied Pacific had hauled a train from London up to Stratford upon Avon (via Oxford) and would be working the return that evening.
I have a photo from 2014 of the same loco at the same location, doing the same thing. However you can't quite get the same shot as I did then due to vegetation growth.
One of the sturdy old warriors of a bygone age -- the steam locomotive. There is a beauty and charm about steam engines, a la Stephen Spender. This one is resting in the Rail Museum in Delhi. As a boy I loved watching trains; there is a lot of romance about the old steam locomotives. Iron horse, as the pop singer would put it.
Ex-British Railways Bulleid 'Battle of Britain' class pacific locomotive Nº 34081 92 SQUADRON, is named after the famous Spitfire squadron based at Biggin Hill during the Battle of Britain in 1940. Entering service from Brighton works in September 1948, her all-too-brief mainline career ended when she was withdrawn from Eastleigh shed in August 1964 and subsequently sold to Dai Woodhams scrap yard at Barry Island in South Wales.
Purchased from there by the then-named Battle of Britain Locomotive Preservation Society in autumn 1973, she arrived at Wansford on the Nene Valley Railway near Peterborough on 7th December 1976 where restoration commenced. In 1998, some 22 years later she moved under her own power at the NVR for the first time since 1964 and became a regular performer on various Heritage Railways until being withdrawn for overhaul at the North Nofolk Railway in May 2008. 34081 returned to service on the Nene Valley Railway in February 2017 during the special Bullied Gala event.
The locomotive is seen running "light engine" at Wansford.
