The pilot started the starboard turboprop and idled for about ten minutes before taxiing towards the runway.
Actually by doing so he also started the much needed, air conditioning as it was getting pretty stuffy and hot inside the cabin.
Small planes like the ATR 72 don't have an on-board APU (auxiliary power unit) like bigger commercial jets do, so they have to run one of the engines in order to get the air conditioning running just as you would with your car.
In the case of the ATR 72, the pilot could also apply the propeller brake so that the blades would be stationary but I guess in the 45+ degree Celsius heat on the tarmac having the propeller blades cool the main engine is a good idea.

Here are a few pics of an engine casualty we had a while back. We spun a couple of main bearings (which then fried and melted to the crank and rods) and broke the oil pump. One of the pistons overheated and caused the liner o-rings to fail, which then flooded the crankcase with coolant.
it seized up a couple of weeks ago, after a week of grumbling, clanking and rattling. It actually stopped mid flow at 50mph.
Getting stuck in a Trabi, in the middle of a busy dual carriageway, unable to push the car out of the way because it's on a slope, underneath a concrete flyover where the noise is so loud you can't hear your phone, trying to call the recovery company who won't answer, as fellow drivers ignore your pleas to slow down and help, while wearing a miniskirt, is not the most relaxed situation I've had. The police were quite good humoured about it though
The San Francisco Fire Department lost two of its members from Engine Company 26, who were both critically injured during an explosion while bravely fighting a house fire in the Diamond Heights neighborhood on June 2, 2011. Both died at the hospital as a result of their injuries after all rescussitative measures were taken by the Emergency Trauma staff at San Francisco General Hospital.
Days later firefighters from around California and around the country gathered to pay their respects during a funeral service. In this sequence we see some of the equipment from Santa Clara County forming up to join in a procession after the services.

I rode the back step on this engine. Think about hanging on doing 50mph down the outer drive on a change of quarters to engine 83 on a cold winter night all alone. (About 6 miles) If you think that you would not bounce up and down on that step you are wrong. Add to that you are by yourself with the other men inside the cab. That is what the new guy had to do.
