Power struck through her bones

Your highness please take my soul

I finally made it out to take some photos and took the oportunity to venture into the canyons before it got too cold. Well it was cold but I compensated by wearing my diving steamer.

Normally I'm either pressed for time or I have others with me meaning I don't get as much time as I'd like to set up some shots. So this time I was on my own with time to spare.

The good thing about spending some time in one spot is that the combination of my body heat and the cold water fills the air with a fine mist which catches the light beautifully. Here's one example.

The Empress Theatre in Fremont, Nebraska opened in 1915, closed in 1977. For most of its history the theater had a traditional marquee but they went googie sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s. A health food store moved in for a number of years following the theater's closing, then it became a candy and sweets store but, alas, even selling CBD goods couldn't keep the store open.

A down working of this train, between Euston and Liverpool Riverside is seen leaving Rugby behind grubby 45347 on 31 July 1959. I have read that this named train only ran between 1953 and 1956, which doesn't tie in with the date of this picture.*

Empress Flour Mill - Waimate, New Zealand.

One of the last Victorian ear buildings in Waimate.

The flour mill was built in 1892 and the silos in 1921. Its current sate of disrepair has seen it been flagged as a hazard in recent times.

On this day four years ago I was with my sister enjoying a weekend in Victoria. My sister had scored a deal on a room at the historic Empress Hotel, so it was doubly delightful :)

Empress of Hastings celebrated their 90th anniversary today, 14th September 2019. Their three Bedford J2 Plaxton Embassy coaches were together at the depot for possibly the first time awaiting a visit from an enthusiast society.

Blackpool Winter Gardens - Empress Ballroom. Opened in an unfinished state in August 1896, and designed by Mangnall & Littlewood with decor by J.M.Boekbinder and paintings by W. E. Neatby, it is one of the largest ballrooms in the world. At over 20,000 sq ft, it can accommodate over 3,000 people on the dance floor and in the wrap-around balconies. It had its own entrance at the corner of Adelaide Street and Leopold Grove (rebuilt in art deco style as part of the 1934 improvements), still used as a get-in, the public usually enter from the main Winter Gardens entrance in Church Street. The whole complex was purchased by Blackpool Corporation in 2010 and is receiving on-going renovation. Just before these photos were taken, the remaining four chandeliers were installed - the first time since the 1950s that they have been seen in situ. The ceiling has been repaired, but is awaiting redecoration - no easy task when the Winter Gardens is such a busy venue. In the Empress acts such as Queen, Rolling Stones have given concerts, the Blackpool Dance Festival has occupied the floor annually since the 1920s, and every major political party has staged National Conferences here. A Wurlitzer Organ was installed in 1935 (only 6 years old and transferred from the Tower Ballroom with a new console and an additional manual and 3 ranks) but was removed circa 1969. In 2014 a replacement instrument was installed, incorporating elements from several instruments, including some pipes from the original Empress organ. The Winter Gardens is Grade 2* listed.

Impressive hummingbird of Andean cloud forest in northwestern Ecuador and western Colombia. Large, thick-billed, and long-tailed, with golden sheen on the belly. Male has a violet throat patch, and female has white on throat and breast. Young birds have a rusty wash on face and throat. Favors very wet, epiphyte-laden forest.

🎵I'm taking back the crown

I'm all dressed up and naked

I see what's mine and take it

(Finders keepers, losers weepers)

Oh yeah, the crown

So close I can taste it

I see what's mine and take it

(Finders keepers, losers weepers)

Oh yeah🎵

An Empress is a delicate thing,

Delicate, yet firm, as an owl’s flight of wing

You can tell a lady by her.....

The 1890 Empress Flour Mill on Queen Street is category C industrial heritage building, which means that its removal is a permitted activity. There are two plaques on the front of the building, one relating to the 118 year old structure and the other to the 1921 grain silos. With a height of 35 metres the category B listed heritage silos are the town's most prominent landmark. They're still in use and will not be demolished.

The Empress Hotel is an early-20th-century stone hotel, constructed in the Chateau style. It is prominently located at the head of the inner harbour.

I have no idea who this man is. He is definitely not local as I would have seen him around that area before. He was completely fascinated by the pig who I call "The Empress" and who is a regular sight around the Forest. There was a large SUV parked up with French registration plates. It may have been that he had just got out for a cigarette and came across the pig. I thought it made a funny sight. Even funnier in the next photo in the comment box below
