I did a little walk around Victoria today and took some photos. This is the Empress Hotel in downtown Victoria, B.C. Canada

On Explore #236, Sept. 10, 2008

The Jewel of the Pacific, The Empress is one of Victoria's highlights. Cresting the city's Inner Harbor, this 460-room hotel was built in the Edwardian style and recently restored to its original grandeur, with antique furniture and luxurious decor.

Considered to be the most photographed attraction on Vancouver Island, The Empress was originally designed by Francis Rattenbury, and opened in 1908.

The image below shows a closer view of the vines that adorn the facade..

Shot last week with my Contax IIIa on Kodak Eastman No. 10, EI 0.3, developed in HC-110 diluted 1:9 for 9 minutes at roughly 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) and fixed in TF-4 at about 45 degrees F for 15 minutes. The film in question expired in March, 1931, meaning it was over 90 years old. And it worked. It worked well, in fact; I got 24 perfectly exposed shots out of a 20 shot roll.

She was stunning to behold. I hope you feel it.

This is a shot down from the bottom of Empress Falls. I like revisiting photos, cropping extra wide angles to see what elements I can focus in and out of. I like it...

it's a shame that the walk down is almost all stairs, though it is amazing walking under hanging rocks with water falling over the side - also great at keeping this spot isolated!

The Empress Hotel is an early-20th-century stone hotel, constructed in the Chateau style. It is prominently located at the head of the inner harbour in the city of Victoria. The formal recognition consists of the building on its legal property at the time of recognition.

Heritage Value

The Empress Hotel was designated a national historic site in 1980 because it is a Chateau-style hotel of national significance as an architectural type.

Built for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), the Empress Hotel is one of a series of Chateau-style hotels built by Canadian railway companies in the early 20th century to encourage tourists to travel their transcontinental routes. Popular with the travelling public for their elaborate decor and comfortable elegance, these hotels quickly became national symbols of quality accommodation. The Chateau-style vocabulary used by the railway hotels evolved as a distinctly Canadian architectural type. The Empress signals the beginning of this evolution from a strictly Chateau-style design towards one that incorporated contemporary forms. Built in 1904-08 to designs by Francis M. Rattenbury, the Empress was enlarged in 1910-12 to designs by W.S. Painter and in 1928 to designs by J.W. Orrock. [...].

Character-Defining Elements

The key elements that relate to the heritage value of the Empress Hotel site include:

- elements which typify Chateau-style railway hotels, including its massive scale, stone and brick cladding, steeply pitched copper roofs, ornate gables and dormers, domed, polygon turrets, high-quality materials, and dramatic setting;

- its asymmetrical plan, with arcaded central loggia, and projecting pavilions accented by vertical strips of oriel windows;

- the layout and interior detailing of the original principal public rooms on the ground floor, including the original entrance foyer, palm court, ballroom, dining room, library and linking staircases;

- its unimpeded view of the harbour;

- its prominent location and imposing presence at the head of Victoria’s inner harbour;

- the presence of landscaped gardens around the hotel which separate the building from the denser urban areas.

Kilimanjaro is a popular brand of Tanzanian beer - it's so popular they named this mountain after it. This is the tallest peak in Africa - and although not high by mountain standards, it's still a challenging climb to the summit.

The Empress Leilia Butterfly is also common in my Tucson Arizona backyard. This was taken on July 19, 2006.

Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Tucson / Pima County, Arizona

This beautiful butterfly was visiting the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. I researched Jeffrey Glassberg's Butterflies through Binoculars of the West and found out that it is called Empress Leilia and is another lifer for me.

RMS Empress of Japan, also known as the "Queen of the Pacific", was an ocean liner built in 1890-1891 by Naval Construction & Armaments Co, Barrow-in-Furness, England for Canadian Pacific Steamships (CP). This ship -- the first of two CP vessels to be named Empress of Japan -- regularly traversed the trans-Pacific route between the west coast of Canada and the Far East until 1922.Over the course of her career, the Empress traversed 4 million kilometres (2.5 million miles). She made 315 Pacific crossings.

The figurehead was rescued after being discarded from during the salvage of the Empress of Japan by the Vancouver Daily Province newspaper. It was restored and in 1927 was mounted for public display in Vancouver's Stanley Park.

That figurehead was itself replaced in 1960 with a fiberglass replica, as the original was beginning to deteriorate. The original figurehead has been once again restored and is now housed at the Vancouver Maritime Museum as part of its permanent collection.

Various portions of the ship's once lavish interior were also scavenged by local homeowners from Vancouver's wealthiest neighborhoods and added to their homes and property values.

Empress Orchid by Anchee Min

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empress_Orchid

Orchid is accepted as a consort to the Emperor and gives birth to his only son. This puts her at great risk, especially from the other consorts, who are never far away. You'll have to read the book if you want to know more!

This orchid is a miniature - only 3cm across, against a Chinese silk robe bought in Hong Kong and covered in Chinese symbology. I kept the other orchids in the frame, to represent the court Orchid has to protect herself from and the soft vignette to represent the fading Chinese empire.

Emerald Empress from the evil future Super Villain team the Fatal 5. She is capeless right now but Ill do a reupload tomorrow of the 3 Fatal 5 Customs I have and put a cape on her. I would love to figure out a way to make Tharok Validus and the Emerald Eye of Ekron. If anyone has any ideas for those 3 id love to hear them.

Empress is a big size butterfly. Their wingspans average at 5 cm for males and open wings can be 12-15cm. This is the male individual I shot at Taoyuan county while it is sucking water. It is the national butterfly of Japan. But this is the sub-species endemic to Taiwan with brighter purple color.

Pictured left to right are Gortok, a Phantom Guard, Mia, Empress Xyndera, a Phantom Guard and Heir Aybel.

Here, Xyndera is pictured with the reforged sword of the Gazuman King Zurgoth. It was broken in his legendary duel with the Captain of the Vieran King's Guard during the war for Attenor in 50AV. The shards were retrieved by Cassandrian physicians and brought back to the library. Now, the sword is carried as a symbol of the intelligence of the most learned scholar in Cassandria. It was Xyndera's fathers before her. Aybel is pictured wearing the Eagle's Helm. This helmet was once worn by the last pure white-haired pure Vieroccan High Chief over 500 years ago. Since then, it sat above Attenor's throne, waiting for the next worthy Vieroccan to wear it.

Gortok is an Orc that was very young when he was kidnapped from the Plains of Bones by the Phantom Guards in 710AV. This was done on the orders of Xyndera's father. He sought to study the orc, to raise him as a human so he could fully understand the limits of their race's civility and intelligence. When Xyndera's father died in 720AV, she took over the study. Gortok is incredibly loyal to Xyndera, seeing her as his sister, but there are very few people that trust him. Several times, the Empress has had to stop executions of her orc friend. In recent years, since Oberajhi has had his sights on Esterdame, he has become more interested in Gortok. He knows the importance of the orcs on the peninsula and that the Attonights can't hope to fight the men, Vieran and Orcs all together. Oberajhi has proposed inserting Gortok back into Orc society so that he can convince the Orcs to attack Vierathan in full force from the north, while the Attonights attack from the south. Xyndera is not keen on this plan because regardless of Gortok's immense strength and size, she believes he would not be able to function in an orc camp, as he's been raised by humans.

Mia is a mountain lion from the mountains south of the Bloody March. She was collected as a cub and gifted to Oberajhi by the scholars of Cassandria as part of the wedding ceremony, because his love of cats is well known. Oberajhi trained the cat to guard his wife whenever he isn't around.

The Phantom Order was established at the same time as the library of Cassandria. The order began as a group of scholars whose mission was to go out into the world and collect knowledge of any kind. As the knowledge began to amass, the order transitioned into being a group of warriors whose mission was to defend the knowledge within the library. The Phantoms are traditionally the children of older Phantom Guards and female scholars and scribes who live in the library and have sworn off marriage. They wear white face paint to distinguish themselves and they are highly respected fighters. It is partly due to their commitment that the Island of Cassandria has never been successfully invaded. When a scholar of great prominence, like Xyndera, leaves the library, the Phantom Guard are responsible for protecting them, and more importantly, the knowledge that they hold in their minds.

Her Dramatic look.. I really love this photo. Some strong aura is reflected here.
