Here's one from the first evening here on Lake Michigan. I cannot emphasize enough how incredible the summer sunsets are in this little corner of the world. Even the past few evenings when there were few clouds, the sunset colors were just plain awesome.
I'm almost done with my summer work-cation and I'll be heading back to California tomorrow evening. I'll miss being here, but will be back next year to enjoy the relaxed pace...and the killer sunsets.
Happy Friday to all...

Last night, I was trying to think of a title for this shot that would emphasize the tallest peak. Wasn't sure if my photos would capture this strange sight, or if one needed to have been there to witness it. My first thought was "smoke breathing monster" but I wasn't sure about using the word "smoke". I typed in these three words in Google and to my surprise, discovered that there is a song called "Smoke Breathing Monsters", by the group, Desert Noises. Anyway, it was just interesting to see this "monster" with its snow eye.
The weather forecast was not good for this day, 19 August 2014, but we were so lucky that, apart from a few raindrops, the rain stayed away. The sun actually came out at two locations we stopped at for a short while, including this one. Our 18-hour day (from 6;00 a.m. till midnight!) started off with the thrill of seeing two or three small Pikas (also called Rock Rabbits) and ended with a brief sighting of a black Wolf (could it be Skoki?) crossing the road ahead of us in the dark. It disappeared into the blackness, but shortly afterwards, we heard three separate Wolves howling (possibly four). We just stood there, in total awe, listening to this amazing sound. The only wild Wolf I had ever seen before was when I was in Yellowstone National Park two years ago. Friends and I saw two Wolves feeding on a Bison carcass across a huge valley - so they were just distant specks, that became larger specks when my camera was in full zoom, ha.
In between these two highlights, we saw several Deer, a small group of Mountain Sheep on the road, a tiny Chipmunk, a few Cedar Waxwings, Columbian Ground Squirrels, a beautiful Red-tailed Hawk that sat on a branch out in the open for a long time, and two tiny Bats that flew very close over our heads when it was getting dark. We also saw a female and two young Spruce Grouse.
Then, of course, there is the scenery! Blue sky to go with the splendour of the mountains would have been wonderful, but we've been having cold and gloomy weather recently. Highway 40 and the Smith-Dorrien/Spray Lakes Trail both run through such spectacular scenery, so it was a real treat for me, especially as I won't drive those areas myself. Thanks so much, Cathy & Terry! Thanks, too, Terry, for spending at least an hour (?) removing one of the car wheels and fixing whatever was wrong with it!

Deliberately overprocessed to emphasize the roof tiles and the symmetry. It's strange how you can walk by something over and over and still see it through new eyes one day. Today, the bright sunlight on the roof grabbed me. HWW, and HSS!
That was another one remaining in the shade. Liked the light emphasizing textures here.

Modern Buildings next to the traditional Japanese Castle in Osaka. Long exposure to emphasize the sky and water. Japan is such a great place for photography.
"That" tree again, this time a wide angle low to ground to really emphasize the mossy and leafy foreground. This is my favorite angle thus far.

A contrast treatment to emphasize the new deciduous leaves against the surrounding conifers along the River. Athough it was early summer when taken, it felt more like Spring.
When re-visiting old images, I tend to see them differently.
The Tall Ship Pallada is a Russian sail training frigate currently sailing in East Asian waters, with its homeport in Vladivostok. The ship is not available for public tours in the U.S. as it has not been in the country since its last goodwill tour in 2011.
Prompt: Create an ultra-realistic, digital fine art of the tall ship Pallada sailing under full sail. Render the scene in a vertical composition, capturing the ship’s full hull and its towering masts rising dramatically into the frame. Show all white sails fully unfurled and filled with strong wind, with every rope, line, and rigging element illustrated in precise detail. Preserve the vessel’s distinctive black hull with white striping and wooden masts. Place the Pallada on a dynamic, choppy sea with sunlit wave crests that reflect the sky. Use crisp, bright lighting suggestive of afternoon sun, set against a clear, deep blue sky. Emphasize tactile realism: taut canvas textures, weathered wood grain, subtle metal reflections, and lifelike water movement. Incorporate gentle atmospheric depth fading toward the horizon. Photorealistic clarity to convey the majestic scale, grace, and power of a fully rigged tall ship under sail. No Grain, No Noise, accurate details from referenced image
This digital fine art was created using Nano Banana AI and Photoshop
I can't emphasize enough how important it is to appreciate every season for what it is. After a winter of contemplative days, I love the way the sun feels on my skin now, and I am so excited for long summer days full of sunshine and warmth. I hope you are, too. And if it’s cloudy or rainy where you are today, I hope you don’t mind. :)
Yell - ow!
I admit, since I started this project, I began watching scenes in a different way.
Emphasizing the color as the main subject of every shot opened a really new set of possible scenarios I never thought of.
So here it is, the fourth shot of the week. Using red and blue for the first photo wasn't a really brilliant idea - at all. Finding possible nice scenes with the criteria I chose is getting harder but hey, it's only the beginning!
For those who don't know the rules of this challenge I created, here they are:
-The main subject of every photo will be one (or two) colors that are particular/strange in the scene. (Green can't be the main subject of a Forest shoot. Grey can't be the main subject of a street and so on.)
-The chosen color have to be highlighted in the shot.
-I can't repeat a color during the same week.
-I can't use similar subjects during the same week. (I can't take 7 pics of 7 different-colored flowers for example).
-Colors HAVE TO BE REAL!
-I have to take a pic per day, for a week.

The Gergeti Trinity Church, located in Georgia, is situated on a mountain top near the village of Gergeti, near Stepantsminda Kazbegi in the Caucasus region, at an altitude of about 2,170 metres. The first light of dawn in the foreground of the photo enhances the mystical character of the location, while the snow-capped peaks and the dark silhouettes of the church emphasize the dramatic atmosphere of the landscape. This area is popular with hikers and photographers for its breathtaking views and historical value. The impressive snow-capped peaks of Mount Kazbek in the background are illuminated by the golden glow of the rising sun. The Georgian Orthodox church was built in the 14th century and is a beautiful example of medieval Georgian architecture. The church is an important national symbol of Georgia and attracts many pilgrims and tourists every year. Behind the Gergeti Trinity Church lies Kazbek (in Georgian: მყინვარწვერი, Mkinvartsveri), with an altitude of 5,054 meters one of the highest and most famous mountains in Georgia and the Greater Caucasus. Although the mountain is hidden in this photo, Kazbek is known for its impressive presence and mythological significance. Kazbek is an extinct stratovolcano. The name Mkinvartsveri means the Icy Peak in Georgian. The mountain is popular among mountaineers and adventurers. The standard route for the ascent usually starts from Stepantsminda, with the Gergeti Trinity Church serving as the starting point. Kazbek is often covered in snow and ice, which adds to the spectacular and mysterious appearance of the region. On clear days, the summit offers beautiful panoramic views of the Caucasus.

Due to its remote location, it offers spectacular and mystical views of the mountains.

When I think of sand dunes and photography, I think black and white. The natural white environment coupled with shadow areas is just made for B/W interpretation. Here are my attempts to capture the beauty of White Sands National Park in this medium. Most are shot in hard light, but some are early or late in the day, some even approach high key. White Sands looks great in any wardrobe.
In late October, I made a trip to New Mexico to shoot the dunes at White Sands National Park. I hooked up with my close friend and photographer, Sandra Herber. www.flickr.com/photos/sandraherber/ We were at White Sands four days, made eight excursions into the dunes, hiked over 20 miles and shot close to 2,000 photos between us.
We are posting our images at the same time and it will be interesting to see how we handled being in the same locations together. For safety reasons and for the fun of it, we hiked the dunes together, sometimes pointing our lenses in the same direction, other times wandering apart. I am sure we got some similar shots, but it will be interesting to see those that are different as we each have our own way of looking at things, as well as having different focal length coverage. Then there is the processing aspect.
To say White Sands is magical is an understatement. As photographers, we talk about the light, emphasize the light, are critical about the light. The dunes at White Sands react in amazing ways to the change in light, offering different looks, revealing various personalities. It is this diversity of the dunes that I wanted to capture then, and present here now.

Greek :
(really thank you Tania my dear friend for your clarification ), I put here
"I love Flickr day - January 5, 2014" .
We might use the word "υποστηρίζω" which means "support" in English...
I 'll try to translate now the text...
Option 1 : "Αγαπώ το Flickr.
Υποστηρίζω την Hμέρα για το Flickr της 5ης Ιανουαρίου 2014.

.......................................
Another clarification of my friend Tania
Instead of the word "Υποστηριζω", it would fit better the word "Στηρίζω".
So the new phrase is this:
"Στηρίζω την Hμέρα για το Flickr της 5ης Ιανουαρίου 2014."
Option 2 : "Αγαπώ το Flickr.
Στηρίζω την Hμέρα για το Flickr της 5ης Ιανουαρίου 2014.
Οι προτεινόμενες αλλαγές πρόκειται να καταστρέψουν το Flickr.
Εάν η νέα παρουσίαση/εμπειρία εφαρμοστεί χωρίς να δίνεται η

All these translations are made to me, except the Greek and Portuguez that my friends who have made it.
And all were checked, also for my friends to different countries

I wanted to emphasize the shapes and textures of this Iris petal so I side lit it. I placed a Yongnuo strobe in a 24 inch soft box at camera right so that the side lighting would create the shadows that reveal shapes and texture. The flash in manual mode was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N.
I've taken quite a few Iris pictures and they can be seen in my Iris album if you like that kind of thing.

How can you emphasize texture and give a viewer of a sense of how an object feels in a still photograph?
In this photo I used colored plastic straws underneath a single overhead light to show the texture of the tops of the straws. By contrasting the colors and darkening the shadows I was able to create a sharper feel for the straws, giving them the sense of how they would feel and further emphasizing their texture.

The lack of focus produced by the window emphasizes the isolation of the driver from the outside world
A slightly different view of the previous post of Bow Lake, emphasizing the surface of the water from a low perspective and a long exposure for a glassy lake surface. Bow Lake is an alpine, glacier-fed lake near Bow Summit in Banff National Park, Canada. Crowfoot Glacier is atop the ledge on the mountain in the center.
The flower has developed a bit since the last show and this closeup focuses on the blue heart and emphasizes the unusual geometry of the flower.
This stunning image features the Crested Caracara, scientifically known as Caracara plancus cheriway. The photograph was taken at the Avian Reconditioning Center in Apopka, Florida, a facility dedicated to the rehabilitation and education about birds of prey. The center serves as an ideal backdrop, emphasizing the bird's natural habitat and contributing to the aura of wild majesty that the Crested Caracara embodies.
The photograph is the work of Adam Rainoff, a photographer with a deep-rooted passion for avian life and conservation. Adam’s work aims to not only capture the beauty of these magnificent creatures but also to raise awareness about the importance of preserving their natural habitats. His commitment to conservation is evident in the way he meticulously frames each shot to tell a story, a narrative that he hopes will inspire others to take an interest in the natural world.

The Adler Planetarium, the first institution of its type in the Western Hemisphere, opened to the public in May 1930. With its neighbors, the Field Museum and the Shedd Aquarium, it forms a significant cultural complex that enriches its visitors' knowledge of the sky, the earth, and water. A connection that is further enhanced by the spectacular lakefront setting of the complex on Lake Michigan which evokes each of these components. The Adler Planetarium and Astronomical Museum was given to the people of Chicago in 1930 by Max Adler, a retired senior officer of Sears, Roebuck & Company who had been deeply involved in philanthropic activities for many years. In addition to funding the building and the planetarium project, Adler purchased and donated to the city an extensive collection of antique scientific instruments for display in the planetarium. At the time of the planetarium's dedication in 1930, Adler explained his reasons for building it. He hoped to further the progress of science and to enable people to "observe the action of the heavenly bodies as heretofore only astronomers could do." He also felt that if people realized the enormity of the universe and the smallness of their part in it, they would be humbled and come to see the interdependence of all mankind, and thus the futility of force as a means of solving problems. The use of the planetarium would "emphasize that all mankind, rich and poor, powerful and weak, as well as all nations here and abroad constitute part of one universe."
On February 27, 1987, the Adler Planetarium was added to the National Register of Historic Places and to the list of National Historic Landmarks. More information about the planetarium can be found on the original documents submitted to the NRHP for listing consideration or their website on the links below:

I discovered a new favorite hiking trail at Tremblant called "Caps". It works through a number of unique ecosystems including a run along multiple small waterfalls and cascades. I didn't have a tripod, but managed to get a beautiful shot simply by setting my camera on a rock and using the timer. I've used the Orton effect to really crank the green up here. It's a little more vivid than reality, but does help emphasize the feeling of quiet solitude that I got while there. Sometimes a photo needs to capture your emotion as much as the reality of the place. It was beautiful, quiet, and peaceful. If you would like to see more of my Tremblant shots and read my article about it as a travel and photography destination, just click here: bit.ly/2aXAOWd

Devon Energy Hall fulfilled the OU Gallogly College of Engineering’s basic need for offices, classrooms, technology laboratories, and an experience-based learning laboratory. The building design was driven by a new engineering curriculum that emphasizes team-based and hands-on learning. The building itself is an experiment in physical learning and an opportunity to put engineering on display; more visible and accessible to students, faculty, and the larger community.
I told him to come down, that the cat would be fine. He had his face a bit too close to those claws for my liking.
The boy and his cat are both happily on the ground now, and it was a nice shot of the two of them.
Edited the photo Lightroom (replaced after 185 views) with a couple of radial filters to emphasize the main subject matter, the boy and cat. Also brightened the image a bit.
It is important to emphasize that this location is in the center of a major metropolitan area, thus illustrating that it is possible for nature to co-exist with an urban environment. Thanks to the Parks Department, Forest Park is in better shape now than it has been in many decades --- a true gem, beautiful and historic. Few cities in America are privileged to have a park of this quality.

The photograph captures a picturesque view of Prague's Main Station, emphasizing its intricate and intertwined railway tracks. In the foreground, the historical station building takes center stage, captivating with its architectural charm and historical significance.
Two impressive arched halls of the station stand out prominently in the photo, creating an impression of strength and monumentality. These halls, with their elegant curvature, serve as a striking blend of modern architecture and elements of old-world elegance.
In the background, one can observe the intricate railway tracks, imparting a sense of technical artistry and the complexity of railway infrastructure. The tracks meander and intertwine, with the distant view highlighting the dynamism and vitality of the railway hub.
Overall, this photograph of Prague's Main Station is a captivating fusion of history and modernity, where ancient architecture stands in contrast with the technical complexity and dynamism of railway operations.

Production: 1 of 82 (1951–1952).
This Ferrari 212 Inter Vignale Coupé, Chassis No. 0221EL, is very special for several reasons. Firstly, the Ferrari Build Sheet (Foglio de Montaggio) strongly indicates that 0221EL was ordered with competition in mind. This is emphasized by the wheelbase of 2500 mm (2600 mm for road cars) and by the tuned engine with 3 Weber DCF / 3 carburettors and 170 hp (the simple variant had only 1 single carburetor).
Secondly, while some of the Vignale Coupé designs can be a bit “wild” at times; This example has extremely beautiful and elegant Vignale design features, which are accentuated by the very special two-tone color combination of gray over beige.
Third, 0221EL has an extraordinary ownership history. Originally delivered to Swiss enthusiast Eugene Lanz on August 11, 1952 (remarkably the original FERRARI certificate of origin signed by Enzo Ferrari still exists), 0221EL was driven extremely hard in its early years. So much that in 1963 it was in such a worn condition that the owner sold 0221EL to Mr Messerli from Kaufdorf. Mr. Messerli was a salvage dealer, but he had a strong preference for the 0221EL, as well as a plan to preserve and eventually restore the car for his personal use.
Mr. Messerli never got around to his plans, and it so happened that the car was totally forgotten on his property for the incredible period of 40 years (!) until a German enthusiast turned up in 2003 and made a very substantial offer, selling Mr. Messerli the car and put an end to his lifelong dream. After a careful restoration by the German specialist Methusalem, while retaining the beautiful original interior, the 0221EL returned to its original glory.

Captured just a few minutes from our "Connecticut" home at Lake Waramaug, this scene unfolded beneath a brilliantly colored evening sky. The post-sunset tones were strikingly rich, and I opted to keep the distant hillsides silhouetted to emphasize the reflection and serenity of the lake.
Another sunrise at the Brant Street Pier in Burlington Ontario. There wasn't much colour at sunrise, so I went with B&W to emphasize the structure of the pier..
This photo emphasizes the steep elevation gradient from the peaks of the Minarets to Iceberg Lake. The lake is near timberline at the boundary between forest and alpine meadows.
Multiple exposures emphasize the human figure and the graffiti that surrounds her. Light gives energy with its diagonal slant as it highlight areas of interest and directs my eye.

The monochrome perspective of a bridge connecting two urban buildings emphasizes the harmonious connection between nature and architecture.
Love the subtle lines of this new jersey dress from Avale, available now as their regular Cosmopolitan offering. When I tried the platinum blonde shade of the new eXxEsS Espresso hair I knew I had the perfect hair to complement the dress, which the sweet pose from Foxcity emphasizes. Butter wouldn’t melt in my mouth!

This is a warm colored shell, and I wanted to emphasize that by back lighting it by I placing a YN560-III in a Rogue grid behind the shell to light up the interior. Once that was set, I used a second YN560-III in a 24 inch soft box at camera right. Fill came from a mirror at camera left. The flash, in manual mode, was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N. The shell was sitting on a sheet of black Perspex.
Other images I've taken of sea shells can be seen in my Shell album, if you like this sort of thing.
