Ruben’s House in Anwerp

Peter Paul Rubens, the famous painter of 16th-17th century, was …Belgian!! A Flemish Belgian, belonging to the Belgian Baroque tradition in painting! His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. In his times he was a Dutch from the Southern Netherlands, living in Antwerp ! Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and of front pieces for the publishers in Antwerp.

This talented man, was a great Artist in many fields, apart from his painting talent!! He was also a very educated , charismatic scholar and diplomat, and had a great talent in decoration and architecture, which he proved by cooperating with great decorators and architects of his times, in order to create his beautiful palace home in Antwerp/Anvers of our days!! You can follow and see digitally the beauty of this exquisite old palace house, here:

I visited this lovely museum-house of today, which Flanders is so proud of, with a Flemish friend of mine, this last summer in Antwerp. I share with you here some of the photos I took of the interior of Rubens House, and of its beautiful gardens , too.

In this picture I want to emphasize the wall details to the entrance to the Fountain of the Lions. In 1984, the Alhambra was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with two other related sites: the Albaicín (or Albayzín) and the Generalife Garden. The Alhambra is located west of the city of Granada on the Sabika hill—a strategic vantage point that provides views of the whole city of Granada and the plain (vega) of Granada. The complex is irregular in shape and surrounded by defensive walls. In all, the Alhambra spans nearly 26 acres, with more than a mile of walls, 30 towers and numerous smaller structures

I'm going in the opposite direction of most bird photographers -- softening the image instead of emphasizing detail.

I'd like to emphasize that the dancers are all doing their own costumes by themselves!

That's a huge celebration of colorful and joyful creativeness.

The event has been celebrated for almost two decades. Yesterday was a gorgeous day, though cloudy in the morning. Sometimes, although has been raining, they've kept the Samba Carnival as scheduled. It's a huge thing - that's the spirit!

Patient expectation, I cannot emphasize enough, is epistemologically essential to the anticipatory understanding of everything. Anticipatory patience assumes that only the most trivial truths land in our laps without waiting. The deepest truths always take time and come with a price.

These weathered log and timber buildings are part of an abandoned mine site outside Lake City, Colorado. Perched on a rugged mountainside and framed by forest, they speak to a bygone era of hard labor and high hopes in Colorado’s mining history. Captured in black and white, the scene emphasizes the solitude and durability of these forgotten structures.

Contre-jour (French for "against daylight") is a photographic technique in which the camera is pointing directly toward a source of light and an equivalent technique of painting.

Before its use in photography, Contre-jour was used in painting, where the shadows would fall to the left on the left, to the right on the right and forward in the lower centre. The edges of the subject would show surprising colour effects.

Contre-jour produces backlighting of the subject. This effect usually hides details, causes a stronger contrast between light and dark, creates silhouettes and emphasizes lines and shapes. The Sun, or other light source, is often seen as either a bright spot or as a strong glare behind the subject. Fill light may be used to illuminate the side of the subject facing toward the camera. The subject is generally considered silhouetted when there is a lighting ratio of 16:1 or more.

I wanted to emphasize shapes and textures so I set it on a piece of black Perspex and lit it from the side with a YN560-III in a 24 inch soft box placed at camera left. Fill light came from a small mirror at camera right. The flash, in manual mode, was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N.

More Wabi-Sabi, this is a detail of a long gone Hosta leaf I stumbled upon in my wife's garden a few weeks ago. I like the texture, and the flow of the veins undulating through the frame, interrupted and emphasized, I like to think, by the holes.

This was shot on a fluorescent fixture I used to use to sort Kodachromes, and it is the product of a 30 image focus stack, so it should reward some pretty close examination.

This serene image captures a unique aspect of Hawaii's diverse tourist experiences - a sightseeing submarine excursion off the coast of Waikiki. The photograph, taken from the shore, offers a glimpse of the submarine adventure in progress.

In the distance, two vessels can be seen on the calm blue waters of the Pacific. The larger boat is the shuttle vessel that transports passengers to and from the shore. Beside it, partially submerged, is the submarine itself, its yellow top barely visible above the waterline. This submarine offers tourists a rare opportunity to explore Hawaii's underwater world without getting wet, providing close-up views of coral reefs, tropical fish, and maybe even sea turtles or sharks.

The ocean stretches to the horizon, its surface a mesmerizing palette of blue hues that blend seamlessly with the pale sky above. The lack of clouds suggests a perfect, sunny Hawaiian day ideal for underwater exploration.

On the right edge of the frame, a dark vertical line - a palm tree trunk - serves as a reminder that this oceanic scene is viewed from Hawaii's legendary beaches. This element adds depth to the composition and grounds the viewer on the shore, emphasizing the accessible yet adventurous nature of the submarine tour.

This image encapsulates the allure of Hawaii's tourism industry, showcasing how it combines natural beauty with unique experiences, allowing visitors to explore the islands' wonders both above and below the waves.

Safari West

Wildlife Preserve

Safari West is a renowned 400-acre private wildlife preserve located 12 miles north of the city of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County, California, United States. The selection of wildlife emphasizes species native to Africa, including giraffes, rhinoceros, cape buffalo, watusi cattle, antelope, cheetahs, zebras, hyenas, primates and numerous species of birds. The park engages in research, education, conservation, and breeding programs that, through exchanges with other zoos and parks, keep the gene pool healthy for the species that are involved in the program. The park is also home to species that are extinct in the wild.

This impressionist painting beautifully captures the charm of a street scene in Siena, Italy. The composition emphasizes the tall, warm-toned buildings, which exude a sense of history and character. The earthy reds and ochres of the brickwork contrast with the softer stone tones of the neighboring structures, creating a harmonious interplay of textures and colors. The narrow street is slightly curved, drawing the viewer’s eye deeper into the image, as if inviting them to explore.

The tree in the middle ground, with its sparse yet vivid green foliage, serves as a gentle focal point amidst the architectural forms. Its delicate presence adds life and movement to the scene, softening the angularity of the buildings. The soft, diffused light, typical of the impressionist style, imbues the scene with a tranquil and nostalgic atmosphere, as if time has momentarily slowed down. The brushstrokes are dynamic and layered, giving the painting a textured, almost tactile quality.

In the foreground, two figures walk together, adding a touch of humanity to the quiet street. One wears a bright red coat, creating a striking contrast against the muted tones of the surroundings, while the other’s darker attire blends more subtly with the scene. Their inclusion not only adds depth and perspective but also evokes a sense of intimacy and everyday life in this historic setting. The painting captures both the grandeur of Siena’s architectural legacy and the quiet, poetic moments of its streets.

Another shot from the Bjarke Ingels Group Serpentine Pavilion, this time the shot emphasizes the repetitive nature of the fibreglass boxes that make the structure.

From Wikipedia : "Every year since 2000 the Serpentine Gallery has commissioned a temporary summer pavilion by a leading architect. The series presents the work of an international architect or design team who has not completed a building in England at the time of the Gallery’s invitation. Each Pavilion is completed within six months and is situated on the Gallery’s lawn for three months for the public to explore. Cecil Balmond has been a creative force behind Serpentine Pavilion programme."

Amazing how fog can isolate the elements we want to emphasize.

Foggy day are definitively worth going out to take pictures, don't you think?

The middle of nowhere is fully emphasized here as AZER 4010 and 4006 grind upgrade with the first cut of cars from Clifton. With the town of Morenci and the Freeport McMoRan copper mine dwarfed in the background, the enormity of the topography brings everything into perspective as to how small things really are out here. If you expand the photo you can see the FMI's yard with cars sitting in it.

Although edited to emphasize the gray gloomy weather, this scene is pretty symbolic of the conditions we've had for the last couple of weeks.

Dedicated to Paul B0udreau, friend and confrere.

Moving slightly on from Black & White but keeping almost to a monochrome treatment, this small series works to emphasize the compositional or structural aspect of my 'technique'. I love rich, saturated colour but it takes some discipline for me to allow the richness of monochrome or pure Black & White to come to the fore.

Maps as formed, reasoned, linear and rational structures, the framework of everyday thought, here, dissolved or made ambiguous. With that dissolution the ego fears the loss of self. Yet, is what it is that fears the loss actually the self? What lies beneath or behind the maps that carries on without them? The blue sky is not touched or affected by the clouds that seem to cover it up. It never ceases to be and is there when the clouds disappear....

Music Link - "Strange and Unproductive Thinking", David Lynch, from his album "Crazy Clown Time". Yes, the cult film maker/artist/TV series creator also makes music. As would be expected by those familiar with his films, the music is strange and at times creepily unsettling. This song though goes deeper into the Lynch psyche revealing Lynch's thoughts on the nature of mind and reality, couched in contrasting lights and darks of surrealistic metaphor and outright philosophical speculation. "Strange and Unproductive Thinking" is either a marathon of random neuron firings or a brillantly disguised manifesto of consciousness. Repeated listenings are required as one go just doesn't seem to be enough to capture the fullness of it. Have fun! :-)

Bear with me, but the back info is Super fascinating.! and long, but worth it!. The several color combinations were to emphasize the lowness of the front wheel drive cars.

The Ruxton was a front-wheel drive automobile produced by the New Era Motors Company of New York, during 1929 and 1930. The car was the brainchild of William Muller, while employed in the engineering department of the Budd Body Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Muller convinced his employer to invest in developing a front wheel drive prototype automobile. Budd would then sell the rights to the car to an automotive company which would contract with Budd for the body work. While Muller designed the drive train, Joseph Ledwinka designed the body for the car and the project was completed in 1928, and the engines were provided by Continental Motors, Inc. In an era when the American automobile had an average height of 6 feet (1,800 mm) from the ground to the level plane of the roof, Muller’s car was only 53 inches (1,300 mm) high, a feat accomplished by eliminating the drive shaft to the rear wheels. Ledwinka accentuated the lowness to ground through the elimination of the running boards.

Instead of attracting an automotive producer, Muller’s concept car attracted the attention of Archie Andrews, a member of Budd’s Board who also sat on the Board of Hupp Motor Car Company. Andrews recognized the possibilities of producing the car and made it possible for Muller and Budd to present the idea to Hupp.

When Hupp Motor Car Company passed on the car, Andrews took on the project himself, and with Muller formed New Era Motors which would market the car. Still, Andrews lacked an ability to build the car, and hoped-for support from Peerless, Gardner, and Marmon failed to materialize.

In November 1929, Moon Motors of St. Louis, Missouri, reached an agreement to build the car, which Andrews had by then named the Ruxton, after William V.C. Ruxton, an investor Andrews hoped would support the project; Ruxton did not support the project, but it bore his name whether he wanted it to or not. Ultimately, Ruxton sued Andrews simply for the purpose of stating that he in no way supported Andrews or the car itself.[1]

Unhappy with Moon's attention to the project, Andrews attempted to take over controlling interest in the company by buying up its stock. Ultimately, Andrews assumed control of the moribund company, much to the chagrin of its President C.W. Burst, who barricaded himself in the company headquarters in protest.

Despite lawsuits and counter suits, the Ruxton went into regular production in June 1930.

When Ruxton finally went on sale, some models sported Joseph Urban color schemes designed to lengthen the appearance of the car through broad bands of white intermixed with vivid colors such as blue, lavender, and navy blue . Many, but not all, Ruxtons featured the cat-like Woodlite headlights; while sleek, their performance paled in comparison to normal headlights. Most Ruxton owners soon learned that they either drove their cars during the daylight, or had them retrofitted with normal headlights or auxiliary driving lights.

Andrews also entered into a deal with Kissel of Hartford, Wisconsin, to build the transmissions and drive lines. With Moon failing, Andrews turned to Kissel to build the cars, and while the project appeared to be on course, again Andrews grew impatient and started buying Kissel stock in preparation for another take over. Unlike Moon, which tried to fight off Andrews, the Kissel Brothers rebelled by filing for receivership in November 1930, and production of the Ruxton came to an abrupt end less than four months after it was introduced.

After the Ruxton debacle, Andrews set his sights on rescuing Hupp, whether it wanted to be rescued or not. While he was able to seize control of the company, his tenure was short and Andrews was removed by angry shareholders. He died in 1938. With a total production of some 96[2] vehicles, the Ruxton is recognized as a Classic Car by the Classic Car Club of America.

Around 20 remain, most owned by a single individual!

Believe it or not, this is a color photo of the ice on Bear Lake taken from a hillside above Rainbow Cove, Utah. Most of the ice is covered with snow and frost and has very little color. Where the ice has cracked, water has seeped onto the surface and re-frozen into very reflective streaks emphasized by shooting into the sun. That created this natural abstract on a very large scale. This photo has not been altered (SOOC).

In a barren landscape, visualize a figure with skin resembling parched earth, looking upwards as cracks on its surface reveal a vibrant oasis within. Inside this oasis, a smaller figure dances freely among lush greenery and flowing water, symbolizing the inner sanctuary of freedom and enlightenment. The stark background contrasts with the oasis's vibrancy, while the larger figure's hands gently cup around it, nurturing this inner world. Surrounding the smaller figure, life flourishes, representing the soul's growth once freed from mental constraints. The scene is rich in high-resolution textures, vivid greenery, detailed hand imagery, and dynamic lighting, emphasizing the beauty of the oasis.

This is an image from my recent Tethered project.

Tethered is a mixed-media project blending photography, animation, and traditional darkroom techniques with experimental processes and tactile materials. Through themes of grounding and isolation, freedom and rootedness, attachment and separation, the project weaves a visual narrative that explores the dualities of connection and solitude. Incorporating materials like thread, rope, food coloring, and elements inspired by landscapes, Tethered emphasizes the materiality of the medium, encouraging viewers to engage physically and emotionally. The addition of animation introduces a dynamic interplay between energy and stillness, enhancing the work’s exploration of landscapes as spaces of reflection, distance, and connection. By merging tactile elements with experimental approaches, Tethered invites viewers to reflect on their own relationship to place, identity, and the tension between solitude and belonging.

A solitary figure stands on the shores of Kavala, lost in the dense fog that blankets the sea and the sky. A moment of silence, contemplation, and existential quest within the vast expanse. The black and white rendering emphasizes the sense of mystery and isolation.

I composed this photograph of one of the buildings facing Madrid's Plaza Mayor to emphasize its unique and historic architecture, wonderful to behold in a world where too many buildings are designed and built with limited lifespans, and to allow to me to talk about the Plaza. The Plaza is surrounded by similar buidings. This one now houses Municipal Offices.

The Plaza Mayor is a major public space in the heart of Madrid. It dates back to the 15th century when it was called the "Plaza del Arrabal" and was used as the main market of the town. In 1561, the plaza was transferred to the city of Madrid.

The Plaza Mayor has suffered 3 major fires in its history. The first in 1631 and the second in 1670. The last fire consumed a third of the square and took place in 1790.

Today, the Plaza Mayor's architecture is credited to Juan de Villanueva. He handled the reconstruction following the massive fire in 1790. Prior to this, the buildings that enclosed the square were five stories. Juan de Villanueva lowered the square's surrounding buildings to three stories, closed the corners and created large entrances into the squares.

Today, the Plaza Mayor is rectangular in shape and highlights the uniformity of the architecture. 237 balconies are present on the three-story residential buildings that face inward towards the Plaza.

The Plaza Mayor has been the scene of multitudinous events. It has hosted executions in history. Today, it is the location of the annual Christmas market. It has also hosted bullfights and soccer games. Every Sunday and holidays it hosts stamp collecting and coin collecting market in the mornings.

Today, the Plaza Mayor is a major tourist spot, but is also celebrated by the citizens of Madrid and has become a piece of Spanish culture. Next to the Plaza Mayor at Arco de Cuchilleros Street is the Restaurante Botin, the oldest restaurant of the world.

A view across the salt pan towards the Panamint Mountains during the last light of sunset. These views are usually photographed with a very wide angle lens that emphasizes the closest salt polygons and diminishes the distant mountains. Here I’m using an almost normal lens length, mimicking the perspective of someone standing on the salt pan.

This is a flower longhorn beetle (Strangalia). Though most beetles are round and squat, flower longhorn beetles are long and lithe.

I decided to emphasize the long antennae in this shot as their namesake would imply. They are pollinators in adulthood but wood borers as larva.

While photographing the Da Lat Opera House, I wanted to capture the essence of this contemporary architecture standing against the Vietnamese sky. My intention was to highlight the purity of geometric lines through a black and white treatment that emphasizes the contrasts and graphic dimension of the structure.

I chose this particular angle to create a clean composition where triangular patterns draw a visual choreography on the curved surface of the dome. The dark sky in the background enhances the structure's brightness, while the black and white conversion sublimes the building's geometry by eliminating any chromatic distraction.

What an amazing sight Fairy Creek Falls is. I've never seen it in summer, but I think it was even more spectacular with a thick coating of ice and snow all around it. While I have plenty of shots of the falls at a normal angle, I found the curtain of ice on the rock quite enchanting, and felt this composition really helped to emphasize it.

[...] The phrase "empty" is already a negation of itself, but one can not remain silent. The problem is to inform the silence, without leaving it. For this reason Zen avoids it as much as possible to take refuge in the language, and tries to make us penetrate behind the words that we speak - what is there - dig. Meister Eckhart does unstinting in his sermons.

He selects a few harmless words from the Bible and makes them a "home affairs" show that he experiences in his subconscious mind.

His idea is not in the words themselves, he turns them into instruments of his own intention.

Similarly, works with the Zen master of some things around him, including his own person, any trees, stones, sticks, etc He may then scream, hit or deal kicks. The main thing is it clear what is behind all these actions. In order to show that reality is "empty", he can stand still with hands folded over his chest. If him another question is asked, he might shake the tea plant, or go without a word of it or put the questioner a stick blow.

Sometimes the master of poetic and compares the spirit of the "emptiness" with the moon, it calls the "mind-moon" the moon or the Sun-safety-An old master of the Zen philosophy sings of the moon:

The moon is lonely and complete:

The light engulfs the ten thousand things

nor that the world exists of the things

Light, world, and things are gone,

and what remains - what is it?

The master leaves the question open. Would she answered, the moon would no longer there. Reality splits, and emptiness leads to emptiness.

We should not lose sight of the original moon, the primordial spirit-moon, and the master wants us to reflect on it, because with him we have started.

Emptiness is not empty space, it contains within itself infinite light, and all the diversity of the world, it absorbs it.

The Buddhist philosophy is the philosophy of "emptiness," the philosophy of self-identity. Self-identity is to be distinguished from mere identity.

For a mere identity, there are two objects that are found to be identical to each other, when there self-identity is only one object or subject, a single, and this one finds its identity by coming out of himself.

Self-identity thus includes movement. And we note: self-identity is Spirit, who goes out of itself, to see themselves mirrored in.

Self-identity is the logical substrate of pure knowledge, or of "emptiness".

In the self-identity, there are no contradictions. The Buddhists call it that So-heit. [...]

Hauptsache es wird klar, was hinter all diesen Handlungen steckt.

Selbst-Identität schließt also Bewegung ein.

The Yellow-eared Parrots (Ognorhynchus icterotis) were photographed in the serene forests near Cajamarca, Tolima, Colombia. These striking parrots, with their vivid green plumage and distinctive yellow ear patches, perch elegantly on the branches of a wax palm. Capturing the essence of their endangered beauty, the image showcases the importance of conservation efforts. The natural lighting enhances the vibrant colors, creating a composition that emphasizes both the fragility and resilience of these remarkable birds.

From a technical perspective, achieving this shot required patience and a keen eye for detail. The challenge lay in capturing the parrots in their natural habitat, highlighting their interaction with the wax palms, which are vital for their survival. This photograph not only reflects my dedication to bird conservation but also serves as a reminder of the delicate balance within our ecosystems. Sharing this image, I hope to inspire others to appreciate and protect the natural world around us.

I wanted to post something patriotic today to emphasize the fact that, while America is obviously not having her best moment, she is built on a strong foundation....and we will not allow her to be shaken by one deranged, hateful fear-mongerer and his loyal followers. I'm confident that the pendulum will eventually swing far and wide.

Facing the Freedom Tower in Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty raises her torch in a show of solidarity and resolve.

Emphasizing the ghostly feeling of having to social distance from others. Stay safe.

I just wanted to emphasize how small we humans are compared to our beautiful planet and how lucky with this photo. Please think of it for a minute. What are the chances for us to be born here? Statistically insignificant. And then, right when you don't expect it, instead of continuing with efforts to protect our Earth, a narcissistic man pulled us out of the Paris agreement to achieve a political score with his base. How sick, how selfish he must be? Considering that he has a bunch of children and grandchildren too, from different marriages. Well, there is only one psychological condition more dangerous than narcissism, and that is psychopathy. It really makes you sick. As David Gergen put it when the US filed its intent to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, "Yesterday we walked away from the rest of the world, and it's one of the most shameful acts in our history."
