Integration of the diesel particulate filter in the engine concept

MTU designs the diesel particulate filter for minimal space requirements, this means it can be integrated into the drive system package in a very compact manner, demonstrated here by the example of the new Series 4000 rail engine for the EU IIIB emission standard.

The two Black Five steam locos (44871 and 45407 "The Lancashire Fusilier") that had double-headed the carriages on the outward journey and part of the return, were removed at Southall.

Class 45 Sulzer diesel D123 pulls in to Leicester North with the carmine & cream passenger set on 26th May 2013. Built at Crewe Works in 1961, D123 was based at Derby. The locomotive moved to London Midland, Midland Lines in January 1965. Last move was to Sheffield Tinsley (TI) where it worked until withdrawal on 7/5/87.

Integration of exhaust gas recirculation in engine design concept

MTU has integrated the exhaust gas recirculation system into the engine design so that it has very little effect on space requirements.

In the SCR catalytic converter, ammonia converts the nitrogen oxides into water vapor and nitrogen. For this purpose, a reducing agent is continually injected into the exhaust gas flow using a metering module. In the exhaust gas flow, the fluid reacts within a fraction of a second to produce ammonia. This chemical compound then converts the nitrogen oxides in the SCR catalytic converter.

The abandoned train depot in Sanderson, Texas, was built in 1882 for the Galveston, Harrisburg, and San Antonio Railroad (GH&SA). A Union Pacific freight train is rumbling by.

Selective catalytic reduction describes a way to minimize the amount of nitrogen oxide contained in the exhaust gases. A urea-water solution is injected into the exhaust gas flow upstream of the SCR catalytic converter, thus producing nitrogen and water during the selective catalytic reduction process.
