Norfolk Southern (former N&W engine) EMD SD40-2 diesel electric locomotive # 1645, along with other diesel locomotives, is seen while leading a manifest freight train on a curved bridge at a location about half way between Harriman and Chattanooga, Tennessee, October 1987. While I was out and about following the N&W steam locomotive 1218 and it Railfan Excursion Train, plus taking photos, I also captured images of freight trains that were operating on the main line. Notice how the N&W diesel locomotive # 1645 operates with its long hood forward, a practice that both the Southern and Norfolk & Western Railways utilized with their earlier locomotives. Notice too, how the bell is mounted directly above the headlight at the front of the hood.

Penn Central GE U33B locomotive # 2910 and an ex NYC U25B locomotive lead a westbound manifest freight train on an express track toward tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, Summer 1971. One of the colorful Boston & Maine boxcars is coupled to the second locomotive. Bob Hughes took this image from his window location in tower SS38. Once PC came on the scene, no telling what locomotives might show up on the former New Haven Railroad right-of-way.

New Haven Railroad EMD FL-9's # 2023 & # 2033 leads a passenger train across the B&A main line diamond at Springfield, Massachusetts, March 26, 1966. The New Haven line curved tracks that are situated behind the tower lead to Springfield Union Station. The train has backed down these curved tracks after its arrival at the station in order to be turned for its outbound operation. The train now operating on the single track line that connects to the B&M, and will cross the diamond to operate on the B&M track for a short distance, but then will back down on the station connection B&M curved tracks that enter the station in order to change the trains direction.

Amtrak derailment of EMD SDP40F locomotives along with two cars in Safety Harbor, Florida, 2-15-1976, Fred Clark, Jr.. If the news reports were correct, a switch was thrown by teenage vandals to cause this derailment of the southbound Amtrak Champion. The big hook was required to place the equipment back on the track without very much damage occurring to the equipment, fortunately. Prior to the SCL, this line was the SAL route between Tampa and Pinellas County, which connected Saint Petersburg directly to Tampa via the Oldsmar trestle. When I was at this scene, the only cars that were derailed was the dormitory baggage car and the baggage car, along with the two SDP40F locomotives.

Blue Ridge Southern Railroad EMD SD40-2 locomotive # 4205 & EMD SD39-2 locomotive # 3932 is seen in the yard locomotive service & maintenance area at Canton, North Carolina, 9-16-2022. SD40-2 # 4205 is the only locomotive in the eleven engine fleet that has the railroad's herald centered on its lower hood nose. Watco of Pittsburg Kansas owns this short line railroad. The SD39-2 has the reporting marks "WAMX" which is for the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad, another Watco property. In order to take this photo I had to hold my camera above my head to reach over a chain link fence to capture the scene, but that darn weed bush was in the scene unfortunately.

Central Vermont Railway MLW-ALCO RS11 diesel electric Locomotive # 3611 is seen in a yard area in Vermont, August 1979. As we were driving toward Bellows Falls and Steamtown we drove over a highway overpass which crossed over some tracks below and I noticed this beauty spotted there on its own. Since I have always been a fan of ALCO diesel locomotives, I just had to stop to capture this image on film. Do believe that this paint scheme presents itself well on this locomotive. A real surprise was situated on the right, because there still was an active turntable in use at this facility.

Blue Ridge Southern Railroad yard engine service & maintainence area with EMD SD40-2 locomotive # 4205 & GP39-2 locomotive # 3932 seen at Canton, North Carolina, 9-16-2022. Many of the freight cars seen in this view will serve the Evergreen Paper Packaging Facility that is seen in the background. Notice the track absorbtive matt situated between the rails. This was another photo that was taken with the camera raised above my head to get above the fence. Locomotive # 4205 is the only engine with the railroad's herald located on its nose, which in my opinion looks the best overall.

Seaboard Coast Line local freight train, led by EMD GP35 locomotive 1413, is seen operating on the ex SAL line as it passes over the ex ACL diamond and through the station at Ocala, Florida, 5-29-1978. This was a union station where both the SAL and ACL serviced. Notice that the main line track is all welded rail and check out the dwarf signal on the left. You can see the engineer through his front cab window.

This year my eldest son, my father and I went the event "Terug naar Toen (Back to then) by the VSM. And of course, many locs were under steam again. The SSN 65 018 and 01 1075 were visiting locomotives again. For the 65 018 one of her last appearances for the SSN before her to be taken out of service. The usual steam goods trains between Beekbergen and Apeldoorn were only running in the morning this year. So that was the focus for the morning. In the afternoon we mainly spend our time around Loenen. Again it was a magnificent spectacle with beautiful weather.

Five Penn Central ex New Haven Railroad GE U25B diesel electric locomotives, with # 2678 up front, are seen on the ready tracks in the Cedar Hill Yard at New Haven, Connecticut, 1971. The locomotives have been re-numbered into the 2600 class PC numbering system on their locomotive roster. During the mid to late 1950's and into the 1960's the catenary was removed from the yard, along with numerous tracks, buildings and facilities. The yard started to become a shadow of itself as time went by and the trash was building up in just about all areas of the yard. You can see steam escaping from numerous pipe connections throughout the yard area. Bob Hughes had access to many areas of the yard to take his photo images.

New Haven Railroad DEY-1 ALCO switcher # 0900, is seen in motor storage at New Haven Union Station, New Haven, Connecticut, ca early-mid 19430's. This locomotive was a one of a kind on the New Haven Railroad in that it was originally ALCO demonstrator 50000, that was built in 1931 with 600 hp and a high hood. Seen in the background is an EP-2 motor.

This photo came from my collection of New Haven Railroad negatives, however; the photographers name is unknown.

New Haven Railroad DERS-2c class ALCO RS-3 locomotives # 520 & # 545 are seen on a siding near the waterfront at Fall River, Massachusetts, 8-17-1957. You can see the engineer in the cab of RS-3 # 520. These locomotives were purchased during 1950-1952 and they had steam generators for passenger service. The RS-3 actually was a real workhorse for the New Haven Railroad in my opinion, and they were seen just about anywhere of the railroad.

Some Facts About Indian Railways WDP4D Locomotive -

Now Some Info on EMDGT46PAC : -

Variants -

There are three variants of this loco - the original WDP-4 which is a 4,000 hp (2,980 kW) loco, the WDP-4B which is a 4,500 hp (3,360 kW)126 t (124 long tons; 139 short tons) weighted loco with a single cab and the newest WDP-4D which is a 4,500 hp (3,360 kW) loco with dual cabs.

Performance -

The WDP-4 is capable of hauling 24 coach trains at 110–130 km/hour. It has also been used for speed trials where it has hauled 9 coach trains at 180 km/hour with recent trials done with Renfe Talgo coaches where it was tested at 195Kmph.

The locomotives can be used in either direction, and frequently haul trains long hood forward, as in the picture. Newer editions with 4500 hp have been produced which have been named with the sub class WDP-4B /WDP-4D which have different traction control with six traction motors and are Co-Co bogie equipped (more similar to WDG-4), unlike the original which has a Bo-1-1-Bo arrangement with four traction motors. Due to some controversies regarding visibility hindrances faced by loco pilots in driving long hood front, the basic WDP-4B model has been modified to dual cab to eliminate any such possibility. Other features of WDP-4B and WDP-4D are same. The cabs have a slightly wider profiles, to improve visibility.

Some of the WDP-4B/WDP-4D are spotted having provision for an inverter-driven head-end power unit, allowing running trains without a generating car (EOG) for hotel power.

The loco is very fuel efficient and has minimal exhaust emissions unlike ALCO based locomotives, thanks to its 2 stroke high efficiency diesel engine. It is characterized by its loud horn, which can be heard for large distances around, and aircraft-like sound of its running engine.
