On the weekend when some lucky person in Clare won €30 million in the Euromillions lottery it would be churlish not to visit and Mr. O'Dea provides the ideal opportunity to do so. Miltown Malbay railway station as it was in 1956 is the subject of the image with a diesel engine at the fore stands at the platform. There's a choice of bicycles available for those who might need to catch up if the train has left the station - or is that taking "Are you right there Michael" too far.

This would have to be one of my favourite diesel engines. This is the 42 class in Ho scale, with the NSW railway colours form the 80's yellow and Indian-red.

Santa Fe early EMC-GE A & B E-Units # 4L & 4A, that were delivered in April 1938, are seen spotted on a station track lead, Chicago, ca late 1930's. These units were classified as E-1's, and were quite stylish with smooth lines, and produced 1,800 hp each with a total for the two units at 3,600 hp. Back in the B-unit you can see a fireman's, hostler's or other employee's head sticking out of one of the open windows. The locomotives are wearing the famous War Bonnet paint scheme. Check out the old sedan to the left, because it is sure parked close to the nearest track. The location is unknown to me, but perhaps one of the Santa Fe fans may know of the possible location by the background building's name and design. The National Carloaders building seems to be the place to load iced refrigerator cars, because quite a few wooden ones are spotted by the building. There appears to be an individual viewing this scene from a second story window in the National Carloaders building.
The name of the photographer that captured this image on film is unknown. This photo came from my personal collection of Railroad photos.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is passing through tunnel # 22, possibly the shortest tunnel on the route, as it heads along the Rocky Mountain right-of-way in Colorado, Summer 1980. The landscape colors appear to change all along the route and the vegetation too. That block signal is neither a dwarf nor a standard tall boy but has an intermediate height plus a special symbol indicated.

We used to come to the ZLSM regularly for the steam train days. Unfortunately, they were not held for a few years. But in 2023 it was fortunately time again. Their own 1040 ran under steam together with the HSIJ 22 'Tom' and HSIJ 57 'Bonne'. Stichting Crew 2454 with the 2454 and the mP 3029, the SMMR 2225, the SHD 2205 and De Karel set 466 were also present. The SSN came along with the 01 1075 and 23 023 with an extra train from Rotterdam. Many passenger trains ran, but also some freight trains were scheduled for the photographers. A very successful event on a beautiful day.
Atlantic Coast Line EMD locomotives F2A # 324 & F2B # 324 are being prepared with their passenger train 38, aka: "The Jax Mail," for departure from the downtown station in Saint Petersburg, Florida, April 1956 Bill Howes Photographer, Photo courtesy of Tom Pavluvcik Collection. Normally this second station platform track was typically assigned to the Southland, but from the look of this train with all of the headend equipment it appears to be the later departing train 38 (The Jax Mail).

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is operating along an upper level Rocky Mountain main line right-of-way while it is passing through rock cuts as it proceeds toward the Moffat Tunnel in Colorado, Summer 1980. It appears that some new ties have been laid out for replacement in this area.
SCL GE U36B # 1836, along with Road Mate # 3214 is seen leading an Extra mix merchandise freight train into Tampa, Florida, 1973. This train is operating on the main line between Plant City and the Tampa Uceta Railroad Yard, and it is closer to Tampa at this location. Note the white flags mounted to the cab to indicate an Extra movement. At this time SCL was utilizing numerous high powered, for the time, four axle locomotives such as the GE U36B., however; nothing quite equals powered axles and that's the reason for the Road Mate to provide the extra tractive effort that's required.

CSX - SCL ex GE U18B diesel locomotive # 1987 is seen on a track located next to the Uceta Shop building in the yard at Tampa, Florida, 1987. You can see the faded lettering for Seaboard Coast Line on the side of the locomotive. This locomotive is ready for some body work and a new paint job. Did have access to take photos at this time because of attending a NRHS field trip to the Uceta Shops.

In 2022, after two years (Corona), Back to Then was organized again by the Veluwse Steam Train Company (VSM). The 44 1593, 50 307, 52 3879, 50 3654, 65 018, 23 071, 64 415, 2459, 2530 2233 and the SSN 01 1075 and 23 023 came into action. Together with my two sons and a friend along the line and spent on the train. The weather was beautiful; lots of sun, but unfortunately less steam development. Another successful day out.

Denver Rio Grande & Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is passing through a very bright scenic area with mountains seen in the background as the train rounds a main line curve in Colorado, Summer 1980. There is a welded ribbon rail on the right-of-way ballast which may be an old rail that has been replaced. It also appears that there is a whitish drainage pipe situated near the center of the photo, perhaps used to remove water from the right-of-way.

New Haven Railroad DER-1 class, ALCO DL-109 # 0712 & another, lead a stopped west bound passenger train at the station in New London, Connecticut, ca 1949. It is winter with snow still present and steam vapor from the locomotive's steam generator is escaping from various fittings. Check out the experimental short lived paint scheme found on these two locomotives. This train will continue its trip along the Shore Line to New Haven, where an electric motor will power it for the remainder of its trip to one of the New York City's two stations. These locomotives still retain their original side panel windows, evidently because they have not been modified to the latest DER-1c class level.

Southern Railway EMD FP7A # 3499 & another, plus a GP30 diesel locomotives are to be serviced for the steam locomotive # 4501 Railfan Excursion Train trip at Asheville, North Carolina, August 1985. These locomotives are in the Biltmore Village area, and you can see the edge of the Biltmore Station platform canopy on the far right side background. Numerous railfans, passengers and visitors are included in this scene. The locomotives are preparing to head to the service and maintenance area of the railroad yard. On this day while on the trip we had interesting weather conditions, because there everything from heavy overcast sky's to rain and wind, plus bright sunshine along the route.
As a full-time father and husband I hardly make pictures of regular trains. Almost only when the SSN or VSM has one of their rare main line trips, I am able to catch some regular trains too. So what I catch with my camera of the NS (or other companies) trains is often a side catch of steam or museum material passing by. Fortunately I do find occasionally some time to make pictures. This time we were in the vicinity of Moordrecht for the SSN Steam Train Days. This day the weather was not that great. Cloudy, but at the end of the day luckily the sun appeared. The DMU of Crew 2454 also passed by and I was able to make some pictures of this set also.
This year my both sons, my father and I went the event "Terug naar Toen (Back to then) by the VSM. And of course, many locs were under steam again. This year the SSN's 23 023 was guest locomotive and a line-up of the three running 23ers was organized. The usual steam goods trains between Beekbergen and Apeldoorn were only running in the morning this year. So that was the focus for the morning. In the afternoon we mainly spend our time around Loenen. Again it was a magnificent spectacle with beautiful weather.

There were two types of this railbus: Eifel (145hp engine) and Schleswig (110hp engine). Only three units of each type were built in 1949 and 1950. Two of the type Eifel and one of the type Schleswig survived.
Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is in a canyon operating on a main line curve as it nears Utah with the terrain color change in Western Colorado, Summer 1980. The mountains and land seemed to change to a much deeper red color as the train started to enter into Utah. In order to take my photos I was very fortunate that I was allowed to open the top Dutch Door window in the vestibules of various cars.

Every year the MBS organizes an Autumn Stoom Day. This year, the 162 came into action with a recently refurbished boxcar also. There were also some rides with the Wismar railbus. Unfortunately it was raining a lot, although it did add to the atmosphere.

Together with my eldest son we went to Loenen, where we almost had a private show of shunting freight wagons. We spent a large part of the morning at the VSM, after which we went to Zwolle in the afternoon to view the 1700 in service there.
