STAND BEHIND THE YELLOW LINE.

Stand Behind The Yellow Line (except when using a long focal lens).

As a diesel hauling empty coal wagons was heading toward the Hunter Valley coal fields it did not slow down as passed through the unmanned station at Lochinvar.

As a result I was able to capture the movement of the fast moving train as it passed.

New Haven Railroad RS-3 locomotives # 538 & # 535 lead an eastbound manifest freight train in the warm afternoon sun on an express track past tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. Always liked to see an ALCO RS-3 lash-up of locomotives, and better yet three of them at times. Bob Hughes was on hand to capture this image on film for all of us to enjoy.

Santa Fe early EMC-GE (A & B) E-Units, that were delivered in April 1938, are seen spotted on a station track lead, Chicago, ca late 1930's. These units were classified as E-1's, and were quite stylish with smooth lines, and produced 1,800 hp each with a total for the two units at 3,600 hp. Back in the B-unit you can see a fireman's, hostler's or other employee's head sticking out of one of the open windows. The locomotives are wearing the famous War Bonnet paint scheme. Check out the old sedan to the left, because it is sure parked close to the nearest track. The location is unknown to me, but perhaps one of the Santa Fe fans may know of the possible location by the background building's name and design. The National Carloaders building seems to be the place to load iced refrigerator cars, because quite a few wooden ones are spotted by the building. There appears to be an individual viewing this scene from a second story window in the National Carloaders building.

The name of the photographer that captured this image on film is unknown. This photo came from my personal collection of Railroad photos.

In 2022, after two years (Corona), Back to Then was organized again by the Veluwse Steam Train Company (VSM). The 44 1593, 50 307, 52 3879, 50 3654, 65 018, 23 071, 64 415, 2459, 2530 2233 and the SSN 01 1075 and 23 023 came into action. Together with my two sons and a friend along the line and spent on the train. The weather was beautiful; lots of sun, but unfortunately less steam development. Another successful day out.

Denver & Rio Grande Western eastbound Rio Grande Zephyr is passing the yard's raised hump area tracks on the left while operating on the main line in Grand Junction, Colorado, summer 1980. The locomotive storage area is situated on the left and it appears that there are either some EMD GP40's or GP40-2's in the line up along with some SD models. It appears that there is a snow plow on a storage track waiting for its next assignment.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is operating on a tight radius main line curve in the foot hills as it makes its way to the front range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Summer 1980. With the many main line step grades and the numerous tight radius curves, the trains speed is not all that fast, perhaps around 35 mph as it makes the climb. You really can hear the EMD 567 prime mover working hard. Again too at this location are ties set out on the right-of-way for replacement by the MOW crews.

Southern Railway main line Extra manifest freight train led by EMD GP38-2 locomotive # 5229 along with two more, is seen while entering the yard area at Asheville, North Carolina, August 1985. Notice the white flags mounted on the locomotives to indicate an Extra train. The train is about to pass the Yard Limit sign in the Biltmore Village area of Asheville. At this time the yard and main lines including the branch lines were all busy with numerous trains operating throughout the day. This photo was taken while on a Southern Railway railfan excursion train trip that was led by the famous Mikado steam locomotive # 4501, with the train operating from Salisbury to Ahseville and return. You can see the engineer and the other crew member in the cab.

New Haven Railroad DERS-2c class ALCO RS-3 locomotive 537 is seen in the yard at Maybrook, New York, March 1966. Originally when first delivered these RS-3 locomotives had steam generators installed because they were often used on branch line trains and also in main line commuter train service as required. You can see the engineer in his cab window. Maybrook was a very large freight yard where numerous other railroads interconnected or exchanged freight trains with the New Haven Railroad. The New Haven Railroad had a large locomotive servicing facility at this yard location.

Turning C 209 in Banagher, Co. Offaly is the title of this O'Dea image from 1962. Living near a railway yard as a child, I often watched the turning of the old steam engines on the turntable and enjoyed the sight of the mighty engine being handled like a baby. In this case it is a diesel engine which is a bit unusual in my experience, as they had cabs at either end? I look forward to being corrected.

Thank you all for the contributions to the streets of Athenry on Friday. It was fascinating to watch!

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr, led by EMD F9A locomotive # 5771 and two F9B engines, is seen rounding a portion of a main line "S" curve that's along side of a river or stream in Colorado, Summer 1980. The weather conditions for the westbound trip were much improved over the eastbound return trip the following day.

Penn Central ex New Haven Railroad EMD GP-9 # 7534, ALCO RS-11 # 7668 & FM H16-44 # 5169 locomotives are seen leading a morning westbound manifest freight train on an express track as it nears tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. The consist includes numerous colorful boxcars and refers. Bob Hughes took this photo from tower SS38.

SCL GE U36B # 1836, along with Road Mate # 3214 is seen leading an Extra mix merchandise freight train into Tampa, Florida, 1973. This train is operating on the main line between Plant City and the Tampa Uceta Railroad Yard, and it is closer to Tampa at this location. Note the white flags mounted to the cab to indicate an Extra movement. At this time SCL was utilizing numerous high powered, for the time, four axle locomotives such as the GE U36B., however; nothing quite equals powered axles and that's the reason for the Road Mate to provide the extra tractive effort that's required.

Denver & Rio Grande Western eight car Rio Grande Zephyr led by EMD F9A locomotive # 5771 and two F9B locomotives heads westbound along the main line to Salt Lake City while in the mountains of Utah, Summer 1980. At this time the D&RGW was not part of Amtrak and the Denver Zephyr was still owned and operated by the railroad. The train was in very good condition and provided full dining and lounge car services along with very comfortable seating for the coach passengers. On this trip I made a scenic photo adventure covering all areas of the trip detailing the mountain countryside scenes along with various train scenes. Notice the high exhaust stacks on the diesel locomotives that are actually spark arrestors.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is seen operating on the main line along side of the Gunnison River in Colorado, Summer 1980. The scenic locations keep on appearing as the train heads west. EMD F9A diesel electric locomotive # 5771 is leading this train along with two additional F9B locomotives, that provide 5,250 hp for tractive effort development.
