On the weekend when some lucky person in Clare won €30 million in the Euromillions lottery it would be churlish not to visit and Mr. O'Dea provides the ideal opportunity to do so. Miltown Malbay railway station as it was in 1956 is the subject of the image with a diesel engine at the fore stands at the platform. There's a choice of bicycles available for those who might need to catch up if the train has left the station - or is that taking "Are you right there Michael" too far.

New Haven Railroad EMD GP-9 # 1208, FM H16-44 & another GP-9 lead a westbound manifest freight train in the snow toward SS38 in Stamford, Connecticut, 1968. This was a great image capture by Bob Hughes from his tower SS38 window. Even with low lighting, snow and train movement, he captured a solid image of this train.
New Haven Railroad ALCO DL-109's are seen while leading a freight train in the snow along the main line in Massachusetts, ca winter mid 1940's. Do believe that this scene was captured at Canton Junction, Massachusetts. At this time these locomotives were really acting in their role as duel purpose diesel electric locomotives that handled both freight and passenger trains. The snow appears to be fairly fresh and with the clear gray sky in the background you can easily see the typical smoke plume coming from the ALCO locomotives. In the background is a tower (SS178) and a passenger station. Notice the long blade semaphore signals towering over the box cars.

This is "Triton" one of the Engines operated by the North Bay Railway (NBR) is a miniature railway in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. It was built in 1931, to the gauge of 20 in (508 mm), and runs for approximately 7⁄8 mile (1.4 km) between Peasholm Park and Scalby Mills in the North Bay area of the town.
SCL GE U36B # 1836, along with Road Mate # 3214 is seen leading an Extra mix merchandise freight train into Tampa, Florida, 1973. This train is operating on the main line between Plant City and the Tampa Uceta Railroad Yard, and it is closer to Tampa at this location. Note the white flags mounted to the cab to indicate an Extra movement. At this time SCL was utilizing numerous high powered, for the time, four axle locomotives such as the GE U36B., however; nothing quite equals powered axles and that's the reason for the Road Mate to provide the extra tractive effort that's required.
This day was all about freight transport at the RTM. Various steam and diesel locomotives drove freight trams or passenger trams with freight wagons. The weather was excellent and the trams were again magnificent.

New Haven Railroad DER-1 class, ALCO DL-109 # 0712 & another, lead a stopped west bound passenger train at the station in New London, Connecticut, ca 1949. It is winter with snow still present and steam vapor from the locomotive's steam generator is escaping from various fittings. Check out the experimental short lived paint scheme found on these two locomotives. This train will continue its trip along the Shore Line to New Haven, where an electric motor will power it for the remainder of its trip to one of the New York City's two stations. These locomotives still retain their original side panel windows, evidently because they have not been modified to the latest DER-1c class level.

My son and I went to the MBS Autumn Steam Days for two days. This year, in addition to the Wismar railbus, the Magda, and the Kikker, the ELNA 152, all black, was also participating. Guest locomotive SHM 6513 was also in action. The two locomotives, MBS 12 Rij-ijzer, 't Gekje', and MBS 10 'Nijverdal', were also making a trip to Zoutindustrie. Unfortunately, Rij-ijzer broke down and had to be towed back by the ELNA. On Saturday evening, a night shoot was organized, which, in my opinion, was a highlight of the weekend. Especially later in the evening, we were the only ones at the depot, and we were able to take many beautiful pictures.
New Haven Railroad DERS-2c class ALCO RS-3 locomotive # 560, is seen in a yard service, maintenance and repair area, ca mid 1950's. These universal main line road switchers could be found all around the system either leading freight or passenger trains, or working as a switcher in a yard.

Santa Fe early EMC-GE (A & B) E-Units, that were delivered in April 1938, are seen spotted on a station track lead, Chicago, ca late 1930's. These units were classified as E-1's, and were quite stylish with smooth lines, and produced 1,800 hp each with a total for the two units at 3,600 hp. Back in the B-unit you can see a fireman's, hostler's or other employee's head sticking out of one of the open windows. The locomotives are wearing the famous War Bonnet paint scheme. Check out the old sedan to the left, because it is sure parked close to the nearest track. The location is unknown to me, but perhaps one of the Santa Fe fans may know of the possible location by the background building's name and design. The National Carloaders building seems to be the place to load iced refrigerator cars, because quite a few wooden ones are spotted by the building. There appears to be an individual viewing this scene from a second story window in the National Carloaders building.

PC EMD GP30 locomotive # 2226 and former New Haven ALCO C-425 locomotive # 2557 are seen while leading a westbound refrigerator boxcar unit train toward tower SS38 at Stamford, Connecticut, 1972. The New Haven Railroad and now PC is still handling many refrigerator trains on its lines. An old former New Haven ALCO switcher cab is seen on a siding to the right. In the background is the highway I-95 overpass bridge. On the catenary bridge structure you can see two short blade semaphore block signals. The train is operating on an express track so it will pass right through the up-coming station area.

Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is operating along an upper level Rocky Mountain main line right-of-way while it is passing through rock cuts as it proceeds toward the Moffat Tunnel in Colorado, Summer 1980. Southern Railway EMD FP7A # 3499 & another, plus a GP30 diesel locomotives are to be serviced for the steam locomotive # 4501 Railfan Excursion Train trip at Asheville, North Carolina, August 1985. These locomotives are in the Biltmore Village area, and you can see the edge of the Biltmore Station platform canopy on the far right side background. Numerous railfans, passengers and visitors are included in this scene. The locomotives are preparing to head to the service and maintenance area of the railroad yard. On this day while on the trip we had interesting weather conditions, because there everything from heavy overcast sky's to rain and wind, plus bright sunshine along the route.
New Haven Railroad DERS-1b class ALCO RS-1 diesel electric locomotive 0663 is seen while spotted on a siding in an unknown yard area, ca late 1950's. This locomotive has plain journal bearings as compared to most others with roller bearing being installed. Several of this locomotives were retired prior to the Penn Central take over of the New Haven Railroad, but a few did makle into the PC. An interesting fact is that when these locomotives were new they had steam generators installed and were intended to power short commuter trains on branch lines. However; they were apparently under powered for this service, so they wound up being used in light duty local freight train service. These diesel locomotives were powered by the ALCO 539-T series turbo charged six cylinder in-line prime mover with 1,000 hp provided for tractive effort purposes.

Did have access to take photos at this time because of attending a NRHS field trip to the Uceta Shops.
Denver & Rio Grande Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is passing through tunnel # 22, possibly the shortest tunnel on the route, as it heads along the Rocky Mountain right-of-way in Colorado, Summer 1980. The landscape colors appear to change all along the route and the vegetation too. That block signal is neither a dwarf nor a standard tall boy but has an intermediate height plus a special symbol indicated.

Denver Rio Grande & Western westbound Rio Grande Zephyr is passing through a very bright scenic area with mountains seen in the background as the train rounds a main line curve in Colorado, Summer 1980. There is a welded ribbon rail on the right-of-way ballast which may be an old rail that has been replaced. It also appears that there is a whitish drainage pipe situated near the center of the photo, perhaps used to remove water from the right-of-way.
