In the case of a parhelion, the sun's rays pass through ice crystals which form the clouds. There is then a refraction.
It's a bit the same phenomenon when looking at an object at the bottom of a swimming pool. The object is not really where it appears to be. There is therefore a deviation of the rays of the sun, and a decomposition of the light, as a prism can do.
The more red colors are closest to the sun, and the more blue colors are opposite. This is mainly visible when the sun is low on the horizon. The rays thus pass through a greater number of ice crystals and the effect is then increased.
This beautiful dirt road lined with poplars, still partially bare in the early Spring, leads to the farmstead called Mugnaga (which in the Milanese dialect is the word for "apricot"), a large farmstead producing milk, cheese, honey, corn, wheat, and other agricultural products (and hosting a nursery). It was still lockdown time, and I allowed myself a brief sunrise session while going to work. I was lucky enough to find a man and his dog strolling along the dirt road towards the farmstead, in the distance, bathed in the golden light.
In this area there are several traditional Padan farmsteads, which are still inhabited and active - in the Padan plain there are so many dead relics of our rural history... - some of them are fairly ancient, dating back from the 19. or even the 17. century and they are often protected as they have historical and/or artistic value. Italy is quite rich in cultural heritage but well, protection often means, say, that a building of interest cannot be demolished, but can be abandoned to its own (sad) fate. The people who are still living and working in these farmsteads are preserving the memory of generations upon generations of peasants who were the workforce of what had long been the most advanced agricultural region in Europe. They lived in the landowners' farmsteads and worked in the attached fields - families upon families who were payed-in-kind (milk, butter, corn, flour...) and were so poor that when they transferred from one farmstead to another the whole (and quite often numerous) family plus their scant belongings could easily fit in a cart.
I have obtained this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-2.0/-1.0/0/+1.0/+2.0 EV] by luminosity masks with the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal" exposure shot), then I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4. Raw files processed with Darktable.
My good old Hanhel tripod caused much trouble on that morning - I had to painstakingly offset against slight horizontal deviations between the five shots of the exposure bracketing, ranging from 3 up to 7 pixels. Luckily it was just a simple horizontal deviation, and I was able to compensate for it. I have just grabbed my new tripod (Rollei C6i carbon), can't wait for trying it! (Incidentally, I have just confirmed the rule that we talk about our poor tripods only when they cause trouble ;-))
Tropaeolum majus, the garden nasturtium, nasturtium, Indian cress or monk's cress, is a species of flowering plant in the family Tropaeolaceae, originating in the Andes from Bolivia north to Colombia. All of the above-ground parts of the plants are edible.
Camera jpeg engine handles red pretty well... bright red is difficult to me when I play with raw files (too dark if not burnt or some color deviation).

One last deviation...far from perfect again, but one I happen to like for the somewhat surreal / fantasy-like look.
Thanks for your patience while I experimented with these, I hope to do better in future! :)
One of the many ribbon waterfalls at the Niagara Escarpment. This is Tew's Waterfall near Hamilton. The trail was quite crowded on this sunny and warm autumn day because everyone wanted to enjoy the spectacular colors on display. Park rangers were guarding each deviation from the main trail to prevent people from falling off the cliffs. In spite of that, somebody did fall down which we learned by watching a colony of firefighters and ambulances that came to the rescue. We had planned to go down but the trail was closed.
Symmetry... what a relief. Things in order. Structure, patterns... and then spotting "deviations"... it sounds much worse than it is, right? ha, ha, ha...
Everything in this photograph is real.
Yet the light makes reality appear like a dream.
Distance, fog, and small imperfections
decide whether an image merely shows – or truly moves you.
When everything falls into balance,
the light begins to flow.
In the flow, I no longer think about composition.
Seeing becomes music –
lines and colors merge into rhythm.
Tiny deviations aren’t mistakes,
but the notes that give the melody life –
like a pianist
who leaves the beat for just one breath,
and through that breath, creates emotion.
It’s not an effect,
but a real moment
when the world reveals, for an instant,
what it usually hides.
When you look at this image –
can you feel how the light resonates,
how it shapes itself and slowly fades again?
That subtle transition,
that harmony between stillness and movement –
to me, that’s visual music.
Fifteen years ago,
I might have photographed this scene with a hammer in my hand.
Now everything feels quieter, softer, more alive –
and I’ve learned how right it was
to let go of the technical side
and finally see
the way I feel.

⏳ Exposure Bracketing (HDR-RAW): 1 s, 2 s, 3 s, 5 s, 7 s, 9 s
During the HDR merge in Lightroom,
the RAW data from multiple exposures are combined before any demosaicing, tone curve, or white-balance adjustments.
This creates a 32-bit linear DNG,
where brightness values are mathematically merged on the raw-data level –
not interpreted or tone-mapped.
The result extends the sensor’s dynamic range by about 3–5 EV,
with significantly less noise,
while keeping white balance, color, and contrast fully editable.
It’s not HDR in the traditional sense,
but a natural, physically correct rendering of light –
as if the sensor itself had deeper reserves.
Yellowstone River. Everyone takes the same photo from the same spot because it's the only place you can do it without dying or getting arrested by a ranger for deviation from designated pathways. In this photo, chucking rain added an atmospheric element to this postcard snap. And no, I did not take a selfie. No time, given the churn of bus loads of tourists complaining about the lack of cell bars to post immediately on Instagram.

Journey Beyond Rail's "Great Southern" luxury passenger train runs between Adelaide, SA and Brisbane, QLD, running through Western & Northern Victoria, then Southern & Northern NSW to reach its destination. The Great Southern utilises the consist from "The Ghan' and in turn only runs between the months of December & January of each year; as The Ghan doesn't operate due to the wet season in the Northern Territory. Due to trackwork in the Southern Highlands closing the track from Moss Vale into Sydney. The Great Southern was required to make a deviation off its normal route. Running via the Illawarra Mountain (Moss Vale - Unanderra Line), the South Coast Line and the Sydney Goods Line. Finally rejoining its original route at Chullora Junction. In this photo, it's near days end as the light quickly fades and we see the Great Southern descending the grade not long after passing through Robertson, along the Illawarra Mountain line, behind NR30 & NR31 running as train number 6KT8. In explore -IF YOU LOVE THIS YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY GO TO SEE THE FINAL EDIT HERE!!! :(See it in large size !!)
The fencing ensures there is no wandering from the path and it just caught my eye and the path leads to the larger tree near to a bridge over a little stream .
I found this shot while out looking for some urban decay for SSC which would you believe is less than a a hundred yards behind me just under a railway bridge.
The two tone sky is down to the strong sun off to the left and the fact I had forgotten to adjust the polarising filter that lives of my 10/18 mm wide lens .
On both sides of the path the grassed areas have many many young trees growing having been planted to replace all the masses of trees that were decimated being felled when they should not have been !!
unexpected deviations, seductive surprises and then still more curves :-)

Deep within the Tin Dish Rivulet Deviation the scope of work and the surrounding topography can be clearly seen as Tuesday evening's paper train, number 3-32 can be seen curving around the surrounding hills, the train casting long shadows from the evening sun as it climbs away from York Plains towards Antill Ponds. The zig-zagging stream in the view is the Tin Dish Rivulet.

Rapidly being caught by a rain shower, 43022 leads 1a82, the 0900 Penzance to Paddington over Notter (or Lynher) Viaduct.
The stone-built viaduct crosses the tidal river Lynher and was opened in 1908 as part of the Wearde Deviation from the original Cornwall Railway route.
The first white sika deer that I have encountered.
I don't think these are a genuine rarity - more an anomaly, with the white fur being a deviation from the standard colouring.

An unscheduled deviation from the Puffins of Skomer!
Decided I could not pass up a rare nice morning on Monday and set off early to the New Forest to try to get some heather shots. Got there about 2 mins before the sun rose and was kicking myself on the way down I hadn't set off earlier as there was some unforecast mist!. I took this shot looking northwards before I reached the heather but not sure of the two crops which I prefer so any feedback/views welcomed! I quite like the wispy cloud in this one but wonder if there is a bit too much space between them and the horizon so tried my 65:24 crop as well.
Thanks for viewing.

Every mind is of trillion deviations
from that world that remain the same
today and ever before
The sun rose, the birds called,
You and me rushed out to ' this' world
Just one day, 'our' world began
The sun set, the birds came homeward
You and me will slip out of this world,
Just one day, our world died
'Self ' in the lap of nature's bounty,
out in the world of happiness and joy
today and ever before .

Festiniog Railway, Porthmadog, North Wales
Since my time working as a volunteer on the ‘deviation’ line to reconnect the Festiniog line to Blaenau Ffestiniog in the 1980s, I’ve hardly been back down to visit.
Now the Welsh Highland Railway is also connected here at Porthmadog. It’s now possible to catch a stream train from behind the castle at Caernarfon all the way to Porthmadog and change for another steam train on the Festiniog all the way to Blaenau. This must make the overall trip one of the longest preservation steam lines anywhere, if not the world… and I’ve yet to do it myself.
Here’s one of the WHR locos on it’s way to take on water at the FR’s terminus at Porthmadog.
