Experiment - 1st try ... Last thursday I was staring at a Juniper tree wondering if the berries would make a good developer. So I grabbed some Juniper Berry Powder.
Recipe:
Juniper berry Powder - 10 gm
Sodium carbonate - 15 gm
Ascorbic Acid - 10 gm
Potassium Hydroxide - 5 gm
80 alcohol - 40 ml
Water - 300 ml
DONT USE THIS ....
I made a mistake when mixing and ended up with a paste I had to dissolve. That is where the alcohol and the potassium hydroxide come in.
Fuji X-ray film HR-U shot at ISO 75 in a Ansco Shure Shot B-2. Big aperture, instant setting.
Developed by inspection for 160 seconds (yes very fast, an image appeared in 20 seconds). constant agitation in the tray. Water stop and rinse for 1 minute. Fixed for 2 minutes in Hypam Rapid 1:4 (nearly exhausted).
So yes Juniper Berry's work HOWEVER.... As you can see I go some splotching in development. I hoped it was the lousy fixer, but alas it was not. So on further examination, there is a lot of resin and what not in the developer that filtration did not take out. Plus my mistake literally took the developer from a powder to a solid and then a liquid.
I am working on a better batch that will be more of an extract. it is soaking as I write. We will see.
BUT, it is a success at some level. And VERY fast. So quite a bit of dilution is possible. Perhaps 5gms / 300 ml or less? That is pretty inexpensive....
Yeshiva of the Telshe, Riverdale, Bronx, New York City
Anthony Campagna (1884-1969) was one of Manhattan's most prominent developers of apartment houses during the 1910s and 19206.
Born in Castelmezzano, Italy, Campagna took a law degree in Naples and then immigrated to the United States. After working in Chicago, first in journalism and then as a lawyer, he moved to New York in 1909 to work for the construction firm of Paterno Brothers, apartment house builders. After marrying Marie Paterno, Campagna formed his own company, the Campagna Construction Corporation, and continued successfully in the same line for several decades.
Campagna's most active period as a builder coincided with the enormous boom in apartment house construction that followed World War I, as large apartment houses sprang up in many areas of Manhattan, particularly along Fifth and Park avenues on the East Side and along West End Avenue and Riverside Drive on the West Side.
Campagna became involved in the acquisition and redevelopment of major sites in both areas. His company built a number of large prominent buildings on Fifth and Park avenues, including 960 Fifth (Rosario Candela and Warren & Wetmore, 1929), a "luxury" building with apartments so large they were comparable in size to private houses;2 and 173-175 Riverside Drive (J.E.R.
Carpenter, 1926), occupying the entire blockfront between 89th and 90th streets.
As he became successful and wealthy, Campagna turned to philanthropy. Most of his efforts were directed to institutions in Italy or to those in New York with Italian connections. He helped raise funds for the restoration of Virgil's tomb in Naples, and for a Roman tower in Minturno. He made contributions to the Italian Historical Society in Rome, and for the excavations of Roman ruins at Herculaneum. In New York City, besides serving as a director without pay of a city school construction program, he donated a site at Fifth Avenue and -106th Street in 1929 to the Italian Hospital (never built because of the Depression) and played a major role in the creation of the Casa Italiana at Columbia University (the structure was built by his firm).
His work on behalf of Italian institutions earned him the title of Count of Castelmezzano, bestowed by King Victor Emmanuel ill of Italy in 1930.
Given Campagna's devotion to the culture and history of his native country, it is not surprising that when he decided to build himself a new home in the Riverdale section of the Bronx in 1928, he would choose the Italian villa as a model and select a highly successful architect who specialized in historical styles.
The Campagna estate is axially organized leading to the two-story house and formal landscape elements. The main axis of the composition begins at the stone and iron entrance gates on West 249th Street. A drive of stone pavers set between the alley of trees leads to a walled forecourt with a fountain in the center.
The house, as seen from the forecourt side, is asymmetrical with a two-story stair tower to the left of the entrance balanced by a low wing on the right. The one-story entrance portico in the center is rusticated limestone and consists of an arched doorway, flanked by narrow arched windows.
This central portion is surmounted by a balustrade fronting the recessed central portion of the second story. The tower contains a tall arched window opening shielded by a balustrade. The wall surfaces on the forecourt side are faced with stucco with stone quoins and molded stone windows surrounds. The low hipped roof is covered with tile.
The garden side of the house, set on a terrace, is dominated by the triple-arched loggia in the center of the first story, balanced on either side by stone enframed window openings set in wide stuccoed wall spaces. Large stone quoins mark the corners. A band course above the loggia divides the elevation horizontally. The second story window openings have stone surrounds; those at the end are shielded by iron balconies. Set back from the main section are wings with arched openings surmounted by balustrades fronting the recessed second story. The wide overhang of the tiled roof is particularly noticeable on this side of the house.
The axial composition of the site continues on the garden side from the loggia. down a divided semi-circular stairway into a sunken garden area 'and along a large reflecting pool to a hemicycle with fountains. The pool garden area is flanked on either side by raised terraces; one is balustraded and looks towards the river, and other is fronted by an arcade which once enclosed an orangery.
Campagna lived in the house until 1941, when he and his family left it to move into the former garage and chauffeur's quarters .- possibly as a result of the Depression-era construction slump.
In 1943, Campagna leased the house to New York University, for use as a dormitory for women "taking a special course in connection with war activities." In 1946, the house was sold to th~ Monitor Equipment Corporation, for use as executive offices and a corporate institute.
Monitor continued in the house into the 196Os, when the company went bankrupt; in settlement of money owed him, Monitor's president, George M. Gibson, accepted ownership of the house. He in turn sold it in 1982 to Eugene and Arlene Kule.
The house was purchased in June, 1993 by the current owner, the Yeshiva of Telshe Alumni.

Film d'essai (test film) of the Pentacon lens "electric" 2.8/135mm fitted to my Praktica VLC3.
For the test, I chose here a 36-exposure Rollei 400S Retro (i.e. Agfa Aviphot 400) that was exposed for 400 ISO following the readings of the Praktica camera or a Minolta Autometer III fitted with a 10° finder privileging the shadow zones. The Agfa Aviphot is a super-panchromatic film coated on a thin polyester base with a water-soluble black anti-halation coat on the back that should be removed by two or three presoaking bathes before developing. The film sensitivity is extended to the near infrared 780 nm. The film is known to gives excellent results to reduce the atmospheric blur and offer a spectacular resolution and contrasts that could help with a tele lens. The view were made the camera hand held with the eye-level pentaprism finder including the fFresnel micro prisms focusing screen,, at 1/500s at aperture ranging from f/11 to the full aperture at f/2.8.
Rue Pouteau, October 29, 2022
69001 Lyon
France
After exposure the film was developed for 10 min 30s using Adox Adonal (same as the Agfa Rodinal) developer at dilution 1+25 and 20°C. The film was then digitalized using a Sony A7 body and a Minolta Slide Duplicator with a Minolta Auto Bellows III with a lens Minolta Bellow Macro Rokkor 50mm f/3.5.
About the lens:
The Pentacon electric 1:2.8 f=135mm is the former German Meyer-Optik Görlitz Orestor 2.8/135mm lens, conceived in the sixties on the basis of a Sonnar optical formula. The company and the lenses incorporated the VEB Pentacon Dresden, Germany, in the seventies. This sample was also modified to include the electric transmission of the aperture coupling. The Orestor has also a less common 100mm companion. The 135 mm was massively produced and most of the Praktica enthusiasts had the 2.8/135mm in their kit as a compact telephoto lens not too heavy to be transported anywhere.
About the camera:
The Praktica VLC is of the 3rd generation (VLC3, 1978-1981) and was manufactured by "VEB Pentacon" (formally Zeiss-Ikon) in Dresden, Germany. It came with orignal Pentacon accessories including, a shade hood for its normal lens Pentacon "electric Multi-coated" 1:1,8 f=50mm, a waist finder, a straight magnification finder, and the regular pentaprism. There are also 6 different focusing screens, the Pentacon hot shoe for a flash, lens and body caps, and a Praktica ever-ready case.
The camera has a CdS photometric circuitry powered by an unusual 4.5V battery that I replaced by a set of 3 LR44 alkaline batteries in series. As the ASAHI PENTAX Spomatic SP, the bridge circuit is insensitive to the voltage difference. To be independent of the finders, the cell is functioning behind the mirror as in the Topcon Super D or the Miranda Auto Sensorex EE.
This Praktica operates at full aperture using an electrical transmission of the aperture using 3 contacts on the M42 lens mount. It could however operates any non electric M42 lenses at real aperture too by acting on the rotary switch at the top left. As for the other Praktica of the L series the shutter is made of vertical steel curtains making the X-flash synchro at about 1/125 s.
Overall Pentacon produced 85 000 Praktica VLC between 1974 and 1981 among about 3 millions of Praktica "L" (LLC MTL TL L etc).
