As we watch the last rays of sun touching the foreground rocks, darkness descends on the landscape. It rests momentarily above the horizon and clings like lichen to the side of a rock. It will be gone in moments, but with a quick "snap", its desperate attempt to last, is captured.

Fog descends over the Sutter Buttes as a lone oak tree settles in for the winter. At the end of every year I like to take a deep dive through the archives. I always find interesting stuff from past photo shoots. This year what caught my eye was the various ways winter manifests itself within a couple hours of my home in the foothills. Here, in the California Central Valley the golden brown landscape is much different than what we experience in the Sierra Nevada Foothills where trees are more plentiful and snowfall a normal event. More to come.

A westbound double stack train glides down Beaumont Hill behind a mix of UP and BNSF power. While chasing QWCTU up the hill, we caught this and two other westbound freights in a busy afternoon on the Yuma Subdivision.

A loaded BNSF grain train eases is way down Marias pass, with two GEVO's on the front and rear hauling 115 hoppers.

On this day it was more common to see two consists combined, running as 2x3x3 with 230 hoppers. A sign of a lack of BNSF crews and PSR related strategy.

This photo is part of my ongoing incognito project.

A project about unrecognizability.

We had been thinking about hiking Rhinog Fawr for a while but had been put off by reports from other hikers' opinions that the mountain was a little rough and rugged. Well, it was a little bit pathless in some parts but on the whole it was quite nice. Autumn will be scenic because of the amount of heather that covers the mountain so we will return.

4266 and 4268 are seen descending the grade here at the Frankenstein Trestle. The two veteran B&M F7s, now owned by the 470 Railroad club, are in the lead of the club's annual excursion on the Conway Scenic Railroad.

This is actually a 're-post' of a previous image. One day I discovered that it's much more visually interesting when turned on it's head.....

Thanks for your visit.

Have a great Friday :p

Running through the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains, BNSF's Big Horn Sub faces some significant climbs as it winds through northern Wyoming and southern Montana. One of the largest is Parkman Hill near the Wyoming/Montana border. The hill's stiff grades warrant a helper district at nearby Sheridan, WY, primarily to help lift loaded coal trains up to Parkman.

Here, having just crested Parkman Hill, an eastbound manifest has its dynos whining as the train rolls down Parkman's 1.25% grade. 15 miles of downgrade lay ahead, before a quick undulation brings them up into Sheridan for a crew change on the former CB&Q.

August 24th, 2025

It had been a wearily wet summers day and I had got completely soaked playing in a golf event. Whilst I was drying my stuff at home later, there appeared a chink of light in the sky. The tides are pretty low at the moment, so I nipped out to nearby Plover Scar in the hope of a sunset!

The sunset wasn't spectacular but all the rocks around the Plover Scar Lighthouse were exposed and I explored parts of the sea bed I had never seen before. I spotted this old ladder on the edge of the low tide mark and I managed a couple of frames as the sun was just peeping through the distant murk. The drizzle stopped long enough to get this and a couple of the Lighthouse before I made a weary trudge back across the sand and mud banks back to the car!
