While visiting DC, I enjoy watching the city out my hotel window. This time of year, deep into December, the low sun angles give a beautiful pastel look to the sunrise.

'december' On Black

We are to have freezing rain tonight to welcome in the month! I actually had snow on the drive to my sister's house for Thanksgiving...harrowing as I also got lost!! It was beautiful though and I had a lovely visit with her in New York. Hope everyone's December starts well and continues to be special!!

"The peak of Icelandic jól is when presents are exchanged on aðfangadagskvöld, the evening of December 24, then the gifts are given. It is a custom to eat hamborgarhryggur (smoked pork loin) or rock ptarmigan. Before Christmas some people cut patterns into laufabrauð (e. leaf bread) and bake piparkökur (e. ginger biscuits).

On Þorláksmessa (mass of Saint Thorlakur), December 23, there is a tradition (originally from the Westfjords) to serve fermented skate with melted tallow and boiled potatoes. Boiling the Christmas hangikjöt (smoked leg or shoulder of lamb) on Þorláksmessa evening is said to dispel the strong smell which otherwise tends to linger around the house for days. The hangikjöt and laufabrauð are usually served at Christmas Day, December 25.

Unlike other countries there are 13 traditional jólasveinar Yule Lads that play the same role as the Santa Claus. The first one comes to town from the mountains December 11 and the last one arrives 13 days later on December 24. Children leave their shoe in the window and the Yule Lads leave something in the shoe when they arrive in town. If the children are naughty they might get a potato but if they are nice they might get something good, like candy, clementines or a toy. The Yule Lads all carry a specific name that describes his actions. For instance, the sixth one is Pot-Scraper and what he does best is to scrape leftovers from pots.

December 26 is generally reserved for family gatherings. It involves a lot of eating with relatives, usually with cousins and aunts and uncles."

Flip knows what I'm gonna do now for the next 30 days...

Yeah yeah, I know you're all sick to the teeth of pictures of 3S71 and various mucky Grids. Worry not, it's nearly all over for this year...

Last books of the year. I haven't finished Hamnet yet, it is printed large, on thick paper so is probably not that long, but is taking me ages,, perhaps because it is very descriptive to an infinite degree, sensitively observed.

The Devonshire/PLF letters also took me a long time to read, more than 60 years of correspondence and masses of footnotes, as there's such a lot of name dropping, but a lot of background to PLF's books plus some extra accounts of expeditions.

Serpentine took barely 20 minutes to read, and the Lost Spells has a lot of beautiful watercolours, read one spell a day - it is enchanting.

Lucia morning... (my Lucia have lost most of her candles)

I would think that this small cozy wooden garage with its thick blanket of snow on the roof would be a wonderful sight for any car pulling into the driveway and realizing its back home. – North Lake, Wisconsin - December 2000 ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©

Another quick ornament shot; nothing too inspired but I do love Christmas for the lighting and decorations so it's hard to resist.

Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe.

While this was shot in the middle of December many of the leaves didn't fall off this year until it was close to Christmas.

Summary composite of the December 2010 lunar eclipse. I used a Canon 5D Mark II attached to a 3" Celestron Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope with an adapter. I used Photoshop to composite them. I would have liked the one on the left to have the same amount of its disk illuminated as the one on the right, but clouds were rolling in before the eclipse was complete.

You can watch a video showing how I set up my Canon 5D Mark II to my telescope to get these shots.

The clouds light up in deep red as if on fire during this December sunset.

This is my December

This is my time of the year

This is my December

This is all so clear

This is my December

This is my snow covered home

This is my December

This is me alone

And I

Just wish that

I didn't feel

Like there was

Something I missed

And I

Take back all

The things I said

To make you

Feel like that

And I

Just wish that

I didn't feel

Like there was

Something I missed

And I

Take back all the

Things I said to you

And I give it all away

Just to have somewhere

To go to

Give it all away

To have someone

To come home to

This is my December

These are my snow-covered trees

This is me pretending

This is all I need

And I

Just wish that

I didn't feel

Like there was

Something I missed

And I

Take back all

The things I said

To make you feel like that

And I

Just wish that

I didn't feel

Like there was

Something I missed

And I

Take back all the things

I said to you

And I give it all away

Just to have

Somewhere to go to

Give it all away

To have someone

To come home to

This is my December

This is my time of the year

This is my December

This is all so clear

And I give it all away

Just to have somewhere

To go to

Give it all away

To have someone
