A Bunia en Ituri, quelque 150 élèves (dont une cinquantaine de filles) des Classes de 4e, 5e et 6e secondaire du Collège Jean-Marie de la Mennais ont été sensibilisés ce jeudi 24 octobre 2019 sur la Paix et la sécurité. C’était à l’occasion de la Journée des Nations Unies célébrée ce jour à travers le monde et depuis 1948. Au cours d’une séance interminable de questions/réponses, les élèves, visiblement conquis par les différents exposés, ont amené l’équipe de la Monusco conduite par le responsable de l’Information publique en Ituri à plancher sur les idéaux des Nations Unies, le sens même de la commémoration de cette Journée, mais également sur la structure de l’ONU ou encore ses Institutions spécialisées. Avec un focus sur la Monusco et ses deux top priorités : protection des civils et appui aux Institutions démocratiques. Un quizz a été administré aux élèves à la fin des échanges pour vérifier leur niveau de connaissances des Nations Unies. « Au moins, je sais maintenant faire la différence entre les Etats-Unis et les Nations Unies, ou entre encore PAM et MONUSCO », a déclaré une élève à la fin de cette activité. Les Sections des Affaires politiques, Genre, Conduite et Discipline, Vih/Sida, Police Monusco… ont pris part à cette sensibilisation. Dans leurs différentes présentations, chacune a pris soin de montrer l’interaction entre ses activités et la Paix, des combats que mènent les Nations Unies au quotidien aux cotés des Etats, dont la RDC.

A noter qu’en marge de cette Journée, l’ONG locale « Action des Forces universitaires pour le développement intégral », AFUDI, a organisé dans l’enceinte de l’Université Evangélique pour le Progrès en Ituri UEPI) à Bunia, une exposition publique d’une œuvre d’art intitulée « l’ONU aux cotés des civils lors des événements macabres à l’est de la RD Congo ». Pour cette ONG, « cette exposition est un témoignage et un hommage au travail que font les Nations Unies dans leur ensemble en Ituri » en particulier et au Congo en général. D’où leur souci de sensibiliser la population et surtout la jeunesse sur l’action des Nations Unies.

Bunia, Itui province, DR Congo - The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, was in Bunia, Ituri Province on the 23 and 24 January 2020. She visited displaced persons accommodated at the site of the Higher Pedagogical Institute (ISP) in Bunia, as well as victims of torture and sexual violence at SOFEPADI a center of rehabilitation for victims of sexual violence and torture. She also met with officials of MONUSCO, Government and leadership of opposing factions in the ongoing conflict in the Province. She was moved by the situation of the displaced persons and victims of sexual violence whom she met and promised to convey to the United Nations Security Council and to the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, their concerns as well as their hopes of seeing sustainable peace return to Djugu territory.

In Goma a risk education relay race in “tshukudu”, a traditional wooden scooter used for transportation, was organized. Fifteen teams with local community and personnel from MONUSCO, UN agencies as well as international and national NGOs rode their tshukudus – many for the first time in their lives - across the streets of Goma and later enjoyed a concert with risk education music and messages.

In Goma a risk education relay race in “tshukudu”, a traditional wooden scooter used for transportation, was organized. Fifteen teams with local community and personnel from MONUSCO, UN agencies as well as international and national NGOs rode their tshukudus – many for the first time in their lives - across the streets of Goma and later enjoyed a concert with risk education music and messages.

Beni, North Kivu, DRC - On October 22, 2020, the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the DRC, David Gressly, visited Hululu Bridge on Beni-Kasindi road, a border area with Uganda. This very important bridge for communities both economically and security wise had collapsed 5 months earlier following heavy rains. Journée internationale de la paix 2021 : A Kalemie, la MONUSCO a organisé un échange autour de la problématique de la résolution des conflits communautaires avec l’organisation des différents fora pour mettre fin au conflit. La cérémonie a été présidée par le Ministre provincial des finances, représentant le Gouverneur du Tanganyika, à l’Hôtel Tcham.

MONUSCO Force Commander General Ricardo Neves was in Matombo (36km northeast of Beni) and then to Mamove (about ten km west of Oicha) an area of armed groups including the ADF and MM and where the Force intervention Brigade has planted its units to protect civilians. He boosted the moral of South African peacekeepers who live in very difficult conditions because of the difficulty of the terrain (rain, sludge etc.) often preventing vehicles from leaving the base ,and encouraged them work to continue to pursue their mandate to protect the civilian population. In his delegation were several civilian and military officials including the commander of the FIB, Major-General Patrick Dube, the head of the Office ai of the MONUSCO Beni, Josiah Obat. Bunia, Itui province, DR Congo - The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, was in Bunia, Ituri Province on the 23 and 24 January 2020. She visited displaced persons accommodated at the site of the Higher Pedagogical Institute (ISP) in Bunia, as well as victims of torture and sexual violence at SOFEPADI a center of rehabilitation for victims of sexual violence and torture. She also met with officials of MONUSCO, Government and leadership of opposing factions in the ongoing conflict in the Province. She was moved by the situation of the displaced persons and victims of sexual violence whom she met and promised to convey to the United Nations Security Council and to the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, their concerns as well as their hopes of seeing sustainable peace return to Djugu territory.

Sange, South Kivu, DR Congo: On 10 Oct 2019, World Mental Health Day was organized by Maj Nazia Mustafa, Psychologist / Stress Counsellor of Pakistani rapidly Deployable battalion, for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma, at Sange High School. Mixed Engagement Team (MET) engaged the local community in a holistic way.
