Communication and community engagement are essential to stop and prevent the spread of Ebola. UNICEF is supporting the establishment of community committees, and together with partners are engaging with trusted individuals and networks, including religious leaders, youth and women’s groups as seen here in pictures, business leaders, as well as Ebola survivors themselves. Survivor testimonies help to reduce fear and encourage people to seek early treatment.

Huguette Vithya, photographed here is an Ebola Survivor, in Butembo - North Kivu - DRC. She contracted Ebola on 12 January 2019 and got treated at an Ebola treatment Center for 4 days. She says she had been vaccinated but as she attended two funerals, she also believes she may have contracted Ebola while being close to the crowd. Hughette is now working for UNICEF to surpervise the community group of women from the Somamu association - who are leaders for Mukuna area. The women meet 15 families each day encouraging them to seek early treatment, explaining the mode of transmission of the disease, ask if they are in good health or if anyone is sick in their community and if people have not accepted responders in the past will keep talking to them about the threat of Ebola.
