Mamove, North Kivu, DRC: The MONUSCO Force Commander General Ricardo Neves On 4 June 2020, , visited the Mission’s military base in Mamove where armed groups, including ADF and Mai-Mai are active. The purpose of this visit was to explore ways of improving the working conditions of the peacekeepers’ in that environment, boost their moral and encourage them to continue to fulfill their mandate of protecting civilians, despite highly challenging conditions which they face in the base. MONUSCO Force Commander General Ricardo Neves was in Matombo (36km northeast of Beni) and then to Mamove (about ten km west of Oicha) an area of armed groups including the ADF and MM and where the Force intervention Brigade has planted its units to protect civilians. He boosted the moral of South African peacekeepers who live in very difficult conditions because of the difficulty of the terrain (rain, sludge etc.) often preventing vehicles from leaving the base ,and encouraged them work to continue to pursue their mandate to protect the civilian population. In his delegation were several civilian and military officials including the commander of the FIB, Major-General Patrick Dube, the head of the Office ai of the MONUSCO Beni, Josiah Obat. Ce pont très important pour les communautés tant sur le plan économique que sécuritaire s’était effondré 5 mois plus tôt suite à de grosses pluies. This very important bridge for communities both economically and security wise had collapsed 5 months earlier following heavy rains. Bunia, Itui province, DR Congo - The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, was in Bunia, Ituri Province on the 23 and 24 January 2020. She visited displaced persons accommodated at the site of the Higher Pedagogical Institute (ISP) in Bunia, as well as victims of torture and sexual violence at SOFEPADI a center of rehabilitation for victims of sexual violence and torture. She also met with officials of MONUSCO, Government and leadership of opposing factions in the ongoing conflict in the Province. She was moved by the situation of the displaced persons and victims of sexual violence whom she met and promised to convey to the United Nations Security Council and to the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, their concerns as well as their hopes of seeing sustainable peace return to Djugu territory.

In Goma a risk education relay race in “tshukudu”, a traditional wooden scooter used for transportation, was organized. Fifteen teams with local community and personnel from MONUSCO, UN agencies as well as international and national NGOs rode their tshukudus – many for the first time in their lives - across the streets of Goma and later enjoyed a concert with risk education music and messages.

Beni, North Kivu, DRC - On October 22, 2020, the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the DRC, David Gressly, visited Hululu Bridge on Beni-Kasindi road, a border area with Uganda. This very important bridge for communities both economically and security wise had collapsed 5 months earlier following heavy rains. On the occasion of International Day of Peace 2021, the Blue Helmets of Central Sector celebrated the day with multiple events organised with an aimed at enlightening the young generation regarding the importance of peace and unity in the development of society. Goma, Nord-Kivu, RDC – Le 14 octobre 2021, la MONUSCO a facilité le transport aérien entre Kinshasa et Goma d’un lot d’équipement scientifique offert par le service géologique américain à l’Observatoire volcanologique de Goma (OVG). Ces instruments aideront l’OVG à améliorer sa surveillance et sa compréhension des volcans actifs (Nyamulagira et Nyiragongo) situés dans le parc national des Virunga pour une meilleure prévention des catastrophes. Goma, North-Kivu, DRC – On 14 October 2021, MONUSCO facilitated the airlift of a batch of scientific equipment, between Kinshasa and Goma, donated by the US Geological Survey department to Goma Volcanological Observatory (OVG). The equipment will help OVG improve its monitoring and understanding of the active volcanoes (Nyamulagira and Nyiragongo) located in the Virunga National Park, for a better disaster prevention. MONUSCO Force Commander General Ricardo Neves was in Matombo (36km northeast of Beni) and then to Mamove (about ten km west of Oicha) an area of armed groups including the ADF and MM and where the Force intervention Brigade has planted its units to protect civilians. He boosted the moral of South African peacekeepers who live in very difficult conditions because of the difficulty of the terrain (rain, sludge etc.) often preventing vehicles from leaving the base ,and encouraged them work to continue to pursue their mandate to protect the civilian population. Sange, South Kivu, DR Congo: On 10 Oct 2019, World Mental Health Day was organized by Maj Nazia Mustafa, Psychologist / Stress Counsellor of Pakistani rapidly Deployable battalion, for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma, at Sange High School. Mixed Engagement Team (MET) engaged the local community in a holistic way.
