As a young artist, Christopher Marley spent many years in tropical regions the world over where insect populations are flamboyant and profuse. His fascination with the creatures gradually prevailed over an initial phobia, leading to lengthy study of entomology and to arduous excursions to locales where the gaudiest beetles dwell.
Marley's work with insects reflects hs desire to impose order on a scuttling, clicking and swarming world. His minimalist arrangements of outrageous color invite inspection and wonder; preconceptions fade as we contemplate these creatures' breathtaking beauty. Although the ensembles are anything but organic, the colors are natural and not enhanced or digitally altered in any way.
Marley asserts that an increased appreciation for these jewel-like beasts can help slow the willful destruction of their habitat - which, unlike individual collection, is the only true threat an insect species faces.
This puzzle looked a little daunting once the border was assembled, especially since some of the bugs were duplicated. Close inspection revealed that although there were duplicates, they weren't exactly the same. Those tiny differences made it slightly easier.
We started in the bottom left corner, moving slowly along the row. Elsewhere we put together the more obvious sections, joining them to each other as we went along. The larger bugs were able to be placed in their approximate locations, which helped assembly, and after a relatively short time we'd made considerable progress.
Fiddly but fun, and complete.
There are some weird creatures in this world that a whole lot of people choose not to believe in, even though there have always been documents of these creatures on both paper and canvas... Well, maybe ignorance is bliss, as they say. I hope so for their sakes!

We’re prototyping new ways to move animated creatures for our upcoming Haunted House with lower-school and middle-school students in our Maker Art class this fall.
In this after-school workshop, students will build a fantasy world together, with magical creatures, ghosts, witches and other animated characters inspired by Halloween.
To prepare for this class, my associate Sarah Brewer and I are prototyping an animated creature, using laser cut wood and cardboard to make it move up and down, as if flying.
This open-close mechanism was designed by maker HyunJoo Oh, who is working with PaperMechatronics.net. She has graciously shared their detailed instructions with us. Much appreciated!
We will combine arts and technology such as this to bring our class creations to life: each student will have their own room in our haunted house, and they will learn to build simple robots and automata like these, then play with lights and sounds to tell their stories for our ‘show and tell’.
We are offering this class in two different schools this fall. At the Lycée Français in Sausalito, we teach lower school students in grades 4 and 5, every Thursday at 3:30pm, from September 15 to December 8, 2016. At Tam High School, we teach middle school students in grades 6 to 9, every Wednesday at 3:30pm, from September 28 to November 16, 2016.
Students will create their own interactive art, in a playful way that makes learning more fun. Working collaboratively, they will make lights blink, sounds play and things move — bringing characters to life inside a cardboard ‘wonderbox.’

The "batch" this is a part of consisted of all sorts of beasts, some based on Bionicle Rahi, some not, but all fancifully executed in accordance with my love of bugs and other organic things, which was prevalent back then, too.
About two years before I even discovered the existence of AFOLs and the artistic applications of Lego, online or off, I started to document my builds. I was 11-12 during this time; obviously the majority of my builds were unpolished, heavily kitbashed, or just plain silly, but a few were pretty cool. I credit this to a childhood spent building Lego sets and perusing the Lego magazine-good stuff!
