This is for Yahoo! its part of this Yahoo! PurpleScape project with other artists. this will be shown in exhibitions in southeast asian countries. They said I could do anything i wanted so i thought now is my chance to do all the Japanese themed stuff i have been wanting to do. Japanese design is crazy and detailed so this of course meant major work for me. this beast took me a whole 7 days working on it at least 8 hrs a day. Like cultural African stuff Japanese stuff is kind of like cheating because everything looks so crazy already that you don't really need to do that much work in designing anything or making it look interesting. I prepped for this by watching Princess Mononoke and Totoro and Spirited Away, my fav Miyazaki movies. he is definitely influential and has an amazing imagination and makes the rest of us look like garbage. Here we have some mini sumos, samurais, tanukis, ninjas, giant rabbits, deer, koi no buri, those things they tie around huge trees, a pagoda like thing, paper umbrellas, bamboo poles, camphor trees, and bubbles instead of poison darts. I had to go and make it complicated did'nt i? Here is my rational:
This piece is Japanese inspired. The concept makes a spin on the processions that Daimyo warlords had to make every year to the capital of Edo. I tried to make this a little more fun and less serious that the shows of power and wealth that they really were. Instead of flying the Daimyo's flag they are flying Koi fish windsocks, which are used for Children's day in Japan. Instead of Ninjas blowing poison darts for assasinations they are blowing bubbles. Fun bubbles! Instead of a Daimyo Warlord being carried they are carrying a Tanuki, which is a mischevious mythical Racoon-like creature. I thought it would be fun to reverse the scale of things like the mini sumo wrestlers and the giant rabbits and giant trees.
Flying Creatures is an exhibit of artwork created by students from various youth art programs around Chicago.
Looking through old images I came across some images from the Creature 7 theater where Kristján Ingimarsson was performing. Interesting to see it and the costumes by Anja Vang Kragh where stunning.
The large, loose-limbed spider monkey is known for its acrobatic feats through the old-growth trees of Central America’s rain forests. Ranging in color from copper to black, this monkey can reach 5 feet in length, and it has developed extremely long, flexible limbs to accommodate its arboreal lifestyle. Spider monkeys also possess a prehensile tail that acts as a fifth hand, used to grasp tree branches and hang upside-down. This spectacular extremity is up to 35 inches long, reaching further than the length of the spider monkeys’ entire body, and has skin grooves on the underside that aid in gripping trees after these highly active creatures make extraordinary leaps.
Gregarious after dark, spider monkeys sleep together in large groups in the trees. During the day, however, they are quite unsociable compared to other primates. The males are solitary, busily marking their territories with scents from their chest glands, while the females tend to their infants, which ride on their mothers’ backs.
Spider monkeys were once found throughout the forests of Central America. However, human encroachment has led to a reduction in this primate’s range, as disturbances such as habitat degradation, deforestation and poaching for bush meat continue to shrink populations. If you happen upon a spider monkey, it may screech, bark and jostle the branches of its perch in a demonstration of its fearlessness.
Gold Plaque with horned lion-griffins
Achaemenid Period
c. 6th-4th Century BC
This ornament depicts the winged lion-monster; the two creatures are shown rampant. In place of the lion’s ears they have those of a bull. The horns curl back over spiky manes and the lion’s neck is covered with a feather pattern. Sharply stylized wings extend over two of the five bosses and serve as decorative balance for the design. Heavy rings attached to the back suggest that the ornament was worn on a leather belt. the similar treatment of the lion motif on different types of objects demonstrates decorative conventions of the period.

My first Spore creature ... not too attractive, not too bright (in the brain, at least; his pink colour scheme screams out "I don't care what I look like, I'm still stronger than you!"), but this little spiked chomper will be munching on whatever he likes ... maybe even your creatures! ;)
(Yes, to those who've been obsessing with Spore for a week now, I've only spent about 8 minutes building this little dude! I just wanted to see how easy it was. The ability to record video straight from the Creature Creator is nifty.)

Illustrations from Marvels of Things Created and Miraculous Aspects of Things Existing (Ajā’ib al-makhlūqāt wa-gharā’ib al-mawjūdāt - كتاب عجائب المخلوقات وغرائب الموجودات) by Zakarīyā’ ibn Muḥammad al-Qazwīnī, originally published in 1283. The illustrator, copyist and date of the edition are unknown. The nature of paper, script, ink, illumination, and illustrations suggest that it was produced in provincial Mughal India, possibly the Punjab, in the 17th century.
This summer Yonge and Dundas Square hosted a weekly creature feature / psuedo drive-in under the stars. The first flick was the monster movie classic Creature From the Black Lagoon. Projected celluloid in 3D no less.
Here we have a little Rock Spirit. He looks after all the little creatures who live hidden in crevices in the rocks, and he is very solid and dependable.
Pattern to make a Spirit like this for sale in my Etsy shop (see profile for link).
