Spent 3 hours today with this little guy I found in my garden. This little fella looked at me just as curious I am about him. Not long after that, tilting his head, it looked at me as if he was greeting me. That's when I felt that, everything, even this scary little creature, has their own sweet side.
Detail of the baptistry window by Margaret Agnes Rope, a gem of a window filled with rich colour and detail.
It's easy for visitors to forget that the fine old town of Shrewsbury has a cathedral, it has large and impressive medieval churches that are a prominent feature of the townscape, but the cathedral fits none of these criteria, it is tucked away in a quiet side street, has no lofty spire or even tower and appears to be no larger than an ordinary church. Dating back only to the 1850s, it is small wonder that this apparently low-budget cathedral gets overlooked, but this is nevertheless undeserved, for it is a little known gem.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Shrewsbury was founded in 1851 and with the generosity ofJohn Talbot, 16th Earl of Shrewsbury, plans for a new cathedral were made. The great A.W.N.Pugin himself was initially commissioned, but he died in 1852 having made only a few preliminary drawings, so his son Edward Pugin took over the project, and the church we see today is mostly his vision. The site was a challenging one, there was never room to be too ambitious, and to make matters worse the ground on this cramped hillside site was found to be too insecure to allow the building of the lofty steeple that was originally planned at the south west corner, thus the building fails to register it's presence on the skyline.
The church consists of a five-bay aisled nave culminating in a lofty chancel flanked by chapels, largely unaltered since it opened in 1856, except the chapel on the south side with it's vaulted apse being an exuberant creation of a later architect, Edmund Kirby, in 1901. The original decoration has been reduced over the years but many of Pugin's furnishings remain, along with the inevitable sequence of Hardman windows in the aisles.
However the most notable artworks here are of a later period, being the superb collection of Arts & Crafts stained glass windows by Margaret Rope (1882-1953), amongst her first commissions and of superb quality, filled with wonderful detail and richly rewarding of study. There are seven in the cathedral altogether (one is hidden away in a sacristy), the largest being the six light west window portraying the English Martyrs.
The cathedral isn't open as regularly as some, but is normally accessible and visitors are warmly welcomed.

i was trying to draw squirrels as a tribal, egalitarian society, struggling to survive while owls and other woodland creatures constantly threaten their livelihood.

Al-Burāq (Arabic: البُراق al-Burāq "lightning") is a miraculous steed, described as a creature from the heavens which transported the prophets. The most commonly told story is how in the 7th century, the Buraq carried the prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Jerusalem and back during the Isra and Mi'raj or "Night Journey", which is the title of one of the chapters of the Qur'an.
Got a ticket? This one was riding for free on me. Nasty creature. It is like 1mm big. Used my 12-35 with macro lens attached.
Anyone familiar with John Murphy's Stupid Sock Creatures would recognize these; after picking up his book, I lauunched on a project to make some on my own! These were all given as gifts to friends;)

On my visit to Ron's creature shop in Toronto. There are puppets from the TV series Goosebumps, a penguin from a Visa commercial, an alien from a Canon commercial, and I see Wally and Murk from the short-lived show Internet Sluts are back there too.
You can check out Ron's site at www.steffx.com/
My step-dad went outside last night and was greeted by a big skunk in his screened-in porch. Despite the fact that he quickly ran back in the house, the skunk sprayed ALLL over.
That prompted me to make this card for him. I had the skunk stamp from Woodland Creatures by Hero Arts. I added the sentiment on my printer, it says "Just stopping by to SPRAY hi".
Don't you just love it when you happen to have the *perfect* stamp for the job? :)
It's a simple little card, nothing special, but he'll get a kick out of it.

Quite often an ant would come out of the Terro trap and there would be this exchange before the new ant went in. I am actually quite happy with this picture.

who are these giant eyelashes? anemones?
at first glance they looked like creatures out of a takashi murakami work, but the closer I got, the more they resembled giant clitorises surrounded by shu uemura fake eyelashes. oddly alluring.
This swamp creature used the pieces from all three of the series 3 glorp corp mixels sets. I had 3 goals:
1.) To use as many of the pieces as possible (if not all!) given that my wife was disappointed that the Lego max builds don't use all the pieces. In the end I had about 20 spare pieces out of around 160 (including spares and the little nixel things). Not bad - not up to my wife's standards though :)
2.) Create a sturdy build that could stand up to child abuse (my daughter). This things can be thrown around a bit no problem (only the top back plate dislodges if the abdomen part is bent upwards with some force - but I was happy with that).
3.) Create something with character and much bendyness in the keeping with the spirit of the mixel themes. It is certainly bendy, and I like to think full of character!
I hope you enjoy it.
