Nanuk est le nom donné à l'ours polaire en inuktitut.
L'ours polaire présenté ici a été inspiré par les sculpteurs d'ours dansants que réalisent les artistes inuits de Cape Dorset, au Nunavut.
L'ours dansant est une image très fréquente de la sculpture inuite. La symbolique associée à cette représentation repose sur la joie de vivre et sur la lourde responsabilité de la vie.
Dans sa danse, l'ours est totalement concentré dans la passion de ce qu'il fait, le nez en l'air, tant pour humer le temps qu'il fait que pour dire son extase de vivre. En équilibre instable sur l'une de ses larges pattes, il s'apprête à frapper le sol le plus lourdement possible pour exprimer sa joie.
Par sa danse, il nous dit:
"Ma danse exprime la joie du poids de la vie, de la responsabilité de la vie, mais je suis encore tellement gauche, si imparfait à faire la dans que je risque de tomber et de vous écraser avec le poids de ce que je dois porter"
Mais peu importe ma peur, dansons, chacun à notre manière. Il faut dire la vie!"
Cette oeuvre a quelque chose de dramatique puisque Nanuk danse la Vie alors que sa vie est menacée par la fonte des glaciers!
Nanuk is the Inuktitut name for the polar bear.
The polar bear depicted here was inspired by the sculptures of dancing bears made by the Inuit artists of Cape Dorset, Nunavut.
The dancing bear is a recurring image in Inuit sculpture. He symbolizes at once the joy and burden of life.
As he weaves his dance, the bear is utterly and passionately in the moment, his nose held aloft both to sense the weather and to express the sheer ecstasy of living. Balancing precariously on one of his large paws, he readies himself to stomp the ground as hard as possible in an affirmation of joy.
Through his dance, the bear tells us:
"My dance exporesses the joy inherent in the burden of life, the responsability of life, and yet I am still so clumsy and such a flawed dancer that I risk falling and crushing you with the weight I must bear.
But despite my fear, let us dance, each in his or her own manner. Life must express itself!"
The work's poignancy lies in Nanuk's performing his dance of Life even as his own life is threatened by the melting of the ice caps!
A collaborative project with Anglepoise, Strong Island & The University of Portsmouth.
10 artists/designers will be twinned with 10 photographers and an Anglepoise light.

We’re creating a Haunted House with lower-school students in our Maker Art class at the Lycée Français this fall.
In this after-school workshop, students are building a fantasy world together, with magical creatures, ghosts, witches and other animated characters inspired by Halloween.
We are combining arts and technology to bring their creations to life: each student will have their own room in our haunted house, and they will learn to build simple robots with motors and Arduino, then play with lights and sounds to tell their stories for our ‘show and tell’.
For our first class, we invited students to plan their Haunted House together, then design their rooms and characters, to be featured inside their cardboard ‘wonderboxes.’ My associate Sarah Brewer showed them how to create their own electronic circuit to light up an LED, using copper tape to connect the LED to the battery.
We teach this class to students in grades 4 and 5 at the Lycée Français in Sausalito, every Thursday at 3:30pm, from September 15 to December 15, 2016.

Our Maker Art class created a Time Machine this year, inviting you to travel through time from the age of dinosaurs to the 50th century.
Our 4th and 5th graders at the Lycée Français designed their own scenes from the past, present or future, and brought them to life with motion, lights and sounds. They also worked in teams to build interactive features like illuminated keypads, spinners and doors, using the popular Arduino platform.
In our after-school classes, we combine art, technology and storytelling to help children create their own magical worlds. They learn to design their ideas, build them with a variety of tools, animate them with electronics and tell their stories. This unique multimedia course helps them develop their creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills -- and builds their confidence that they can help change the world.
This year, we had a really good group of 9 students, ages 8 to 11 -- many of whom had taken our Maker Art classes before. They were very creative and engaged, and did a great job presenting their work at the Lycée Français -- and at Marinovators at the College of Marin on April 22.
This Maker Art class was taught by Fabrice Florin and Edward Janne at the Lycée Français in Sausalito in winter 2017. We met every week for 12 workshops of 90 minutes each, Thursdays at 3:30pm, from January 5 to March 30, 2017. Our teachers are part of the Tam Makers learning community and we prepared materials for this project in our state-of-the-art makerspace at the nearby Tam High School.

Created with real capiz shells, constancia three dimensional wall tiles are in-laid with the natural luminosity and texture of these sea shells. Innovative eco-friendly PVC substrates provide the 3D surface for the wall tiles. The material is light, durable, insect repellant and resists weathering.
We are creating an Art Float for Social Change at Tam Makers, to inspire more people to participate in democracy. Our parade float will reach out to youth and people of color through art, music and technology. We will present this art show on Earth Day, Memorial Day and Fourth of July parades in Marin -- and throughout California this fall, to encourage people to vote in the next election.
Our unique art float celebrates mother earth with a carousel of waving hands, pulled by a giant feathered serpent. Performers will tell stories of hope on a stage decorated with scenes of a better world. Large signs will invite people to speak up and vote! You can pitch ideas for social change on the podium, or have them scroll on the news ticker.
This community art project is created by a team of students and makers, led by Fabrice Florin and Geo Monley, co-founders of Tam Makers in Mill Valley. We are grateful to Tam High School for hosting this project and to all our wonderful volunteers and art, civic and educational partners, for helping create this float and present it to a diverse community.
We are building this project in March and April 2018, on Thursday evenings from 4 to 9pm -- or Saturday mornings from 10am to 1pm. If you would like to volunteer, please email us at float@tammakers.org.

Womensphere 2016 Summit on Creating the Future: Full Steam Ahead

Womensphere’s Annual Fall Summit brought together over 200 diverse leaders and emerging leaders across sectors, including executives, professionals, entrepreneurs, educators, scientists, artists, student leaders, and leaders from civil society. Convened on the day before the 2016 US national elections, we were thrilled to be able to come together in celebration and strength, to share, discuss, ideate, and collaborate on creating the future to accelerate the advancement of women in all fields.
We were excited to honor Morgan Stanley Vice Chairman Carla Harris with the Womensphere Global Leadership Award for her powerful and creative vision, her longstanding commitment to empowering women and youth of color, and more than a dozen other great reasons. During this week, campers learned interesting information about the lives, history and techniques of master artists such as Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keefe, and others.
Inspired by these famous artists, campers got to experiment with many
different art materials as they created their own ARTrageous masterpieces.
