Our Maker Art class created a Haunted House in fall 2016. In this after-school workshop at the Lycée Français, students ages 7 to 10 built a fantasy world together, with magical creatures, ghosts, witches and other spooky characters.

We combined arts and technology to bring their creations to life: each student created their own room in our haunted house, and animated their characters with motors and simple mechanisms, adding lights and sounds to tell their stories.

Students started by designing their rooms and characters, and built them in their own cardboard ‘wonderboxes.’ We then asked them to sketch up their individual visions of the Haunted House and combined them together. Children worked in teams to build some of the more complex features: a clock tower, an elevator and an animated graveyard zombie, all powered with Arduino boards.

I’m very grateful to my associate teachers for this class: Sarah Brewer and Edward Janne were amazing partners and empowered our students to create their own interactive art, helping them bring their ideas to life in a playful way that made learning more fun.

We taught this class weekly at the Lycée Français in Sausalito, with 8 school students in grades 3, 4 and 5. We met every Thursday at 3:30pm, from September 15 to December 8, 2016. Many of the materials we used in this class were prepared at Tam Makers, our makerspace in Mill Valley.

As part of Face Britain, these projections onto Buckingham Palace were created to break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Collaborative Artwork.

Every child in the UK was invited to upload a self-portrait to be used as part of the installation. In the end over 200,000 responded and there individual portraits were reformed into 32 animated mosaic portraits of Queen Elizabeth II.

24 high power video projectors were stitched together to create the images, which were across the entire façade of Buckingham Palace.

Face Britain runs from the 19th to the 21st April 2012 and is part of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.

GET PLUCKED

PSU hired us to design a new brand, but the ID was not well represented on apparel. So we acquired a license from the CLC (Collegiate Licensing Corporation) and started a new line. We made the mannequin (we named Brenda) to display the product in the retail space. The name “Pluck” emerged victorious from an internal naming competition.

Near whatever the Giants ballpark is called now.

[This was my reply to a comment that appears to have been deleted along with their Flickr account. (RP, 6/12/22)]

The subject was in such a weird public space that it was hard to get a good shot. I wasn't sure about the cropping. I was hoping that the pole abstract, daylight, truncated blue piece, and the odd angle lines would add to the vibe. My feeling is that the peeled back portions of the main image really help.

Create a dreamy, vintage-inspired portrait of a glamorous woman standing confidently in front of a classic turquoise pickup truck. She wears a bold cherry-red dress that accentuates her hourglass silhouette, with soft blonde curls framing her face in a Hollywood-pinup style. The sunlight adds a gentle glow, enhancing the nostalgic atmosphere as she poses with subtle elegance and allure. Capture the blend of retro charm, automotive Americana, and timeless beauty, evoking the spirit of 1950s glamour brought to life in a modern, polished scene.

We’re creating a Haunted House with lower-school students in our Maker Art class at the Lycée Français this fall.

In this after-school workshop, students are building a fantasy world together, with magical creatures, ghosts, witches and other animated characters inspired by Halloween.

We are combining arts and technology to bring their creations to life: each student will have their own room in our haunted house, and they will learn to build simple robots with motors and Arduino, then play with lights and sounds to tell their stories for our ‘show and tell’.

For our sixth class, we invited students to design special attractions for their Haunted House in small teams: a graveyard, a spooky elevator and an old clock tower. Children also put the finishing touches on their individual ‘wonderbox’ rooms.

My associate Sarah Brewer and I are teaching this class to students in grades 4 and 5 at the Lycée Français in Sausalito, every Thursday at 3:30pm, from September 15 to December 15, 2016.

…Sculpting

The signature feature of the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival and a long-time regional favorite, the International Sandsculpting Championship, displays fantastic works of art created by a talented international field of sculptors from countries around the world.

The distinctive event is housed beneath a huge tent, almost as large as a football field, which shields 22 sculptures created by 12 solo and 10 doubles teams. This year, sculptors competed for the largest prize purse awarded in the country.

Highlights:

• Viewing lasted for 10 days

• Walkways and viewing areas provided an intimate view of the process and artwork

• Lighting for viewing into the evening hours

• Protection from wind and rain, providing an entertainment option no matter the weather!

• Unique photo opportunities

• Meet and Greet opportunities with the extremely talented pool of sculptors!

Yea - right - well, I had the entire length of selvage 1 1/4'' wide piece from the other side with which to make the long Tie Tube.

I stitched with my presser foot along side the fold at the left, right sides together - and then expected to turn this 2 yard length right side out - using my Loop Turner as you see here. WRONG!!!! Too long, and even though I took a 'big bite' as you can see in this photo with the hook on the end, it was a booger to try to turn, and it ripped through the end - leaving my turning tube a total FLOP!

How about some yarn to use as the Tie Tube????

Create A Smile September Moodboard Challenge

My impressions to that moodboard:

The colorings will be kept in orange, grey, silver and black like from the first pic. The pic in the right top corner made me think of a shaker card, like the little corns ... The pumkin is round like the sequins I am using. The leaves moving around in autumn like the shaker shaking ... so a lot of celebrations can happen in autumn ... so cheer out loud, dance, shake and have fun all!
