Great Horned Owl

I often wonder what happens in my yard that is never seen.
My wife spied this visitor yesterday while doing some work in the kitchen. It was well over 100 F at the time and shortly after landing and evaluating the situation, the owl jumped onto a ledge in the pool where the water is only a few inches deep.
It was actually darker than it appears in the photo, but modern cameras do their magic and a little processing helps. I had my 24-70 mm lens on my camera and didn't want to miss the capture opportunity so there was no changing to something longer.

It's Memorial Day in Washington, DC. Visited the Jefferson Memorial and got this shot. If you've never been to this memorial and haven't read the inscriptions there - do yourself a favor and make the trip. It will be a reminder that truly great men founded this country. There is hope that the idiots will fade and we'll get back to sanity around here,

This White-Throated Kingfisher looked as though it was contemplating its life. Truth be told, it was eyeing its prey in the small pond below.
A Snow Bunting looks over small flowers on the Alaskan tundra just on the outskirts of Barrow. The concept of beauty is enduring even though beauty itself is ephemeral and based, almost certainly, on personal bias. We each experience beauty in a different fashion. That’s simply why some of us like chocolate ice cream and others like vanilla. Some don’t like ice cream at all and prefer frozen yogurt. It’s an oversimplification but is very basic premise. How, what, when, and to what degree we contemplate beautiful things is based not only on our personal experiences, but also on the environment

We visited North Beach in San Francisco today for the annual North Beach festival, and spent some browsing books in the famous City Lights Bookstore - the hangout of the Beat Generation in the 50's and 60's. It's is a fascinating, eclectic place, still thriving in the days when people buy their books on-line for their Kindle.
My daughter is also a reader with varied interests like me.
