“Two possible supersonic transport configurations studied by Boeing Transport Division engineers are shown in this artist’s drawing. The design shown at top has a modified delta wing under which are four pod-mounted engines with a high-mounted canard forward. The configuration below it also uses a modified delta wing, but of different shape, and has four engines mounted at the aft end of the fuselage. The canard is mounted low on the forward fuselage. Speed of both the study configurations is in the Mach 2-3 range. Boeing has expended several million dollars over the past few years in conducting basic studies of a supersonic transport to which it has given the numerical designation 733.”
The image was featured on page 5 of the July 1961 issue (Volume XXXI - Number 7) of "Boeing Magazine".
These aircraft are gorgeous, elegant, sleek, and look like they could’ve been designed yesterday. I really dig canards on any air/spacecraft.
An absolutely beautiful depiction by Boeing Aircraft Company artist/illustrator Jack E. Young.
The following is immensely satisfying, humbling and one in the “W” column:

Another great American/human being, with an amazing story. Note how eloquently, yet unassumingly he recounts his story. They don't make 'em like this anymore. Here & there, yes, but not on a large scale anymore. THANK YOU for your sacrifice and service Brother.
The top aircraft, in a possible subsequent version, appearing a bit more squat, with "733" on the tail & flying solo. Also rendered by Mr. Young:

Switches/Turnouts/Points are one of the weakest areas in building realistic and reliable layouts. The TLG R40 switch is quite limited in potential configurations and has severe geometry due to its R40 radius. It does not combine to make a crossover at a nominal 16-stud centreline and the diverging route does not integrate into a nominal curve radius. To overcome these limitations, I have designed a switch concept called a "Medium" switch. I chose the name "Medium" because it fits in between the TLG R40 "Short" switch and a (yet undesigned) "Long" switch. The design requirements were as follows:
▪ Nominal 8s interval boundaries
▪ Integrates into a 16s centreline crossover without modification
▪ Integrates into a 16s interval radius
▪ 22.5º crossing vee / diverging route angle to support return curves
When designing this switch, it became apparent that the 16-stud convention and 22.5º sector angles do not overlap well from a geometry point of view. Designing a switch to make a clean crossover was easy. Designing it to support a return curve back to a 16-stud centreline *and* within an 8-stud lateral grid was not! It turns out that in addition to the switch itself, a new straight track element is required to realign the geometry of return curves back to a nominal 8-stud interval grid. After some analysis of various track configurations, a "2/5 Straight" or "6.5-stud Straight" element was required. In actual fact it is 6.48x studs long for minimal alignment error; however, even at 6.5x it is within the mechanical tolerances of track construction. This element is very nearly the familiar ratio of 2/5 which we use for SNOT building techniques. It is in fact a partial ratio of the standard 16-stud straight, i.e. 2/5 x 16 studs = 6.4 studs. This new straight element makes possible a variety of return curve configurations with several standard (R56, R72, R88) radii as well as providing alignment for stacked yard ladders.
In future, I intend to design a so-called "Long" switch which has a diverging route at 11.25º. I haven't worked out all of the geometry; however, I am hoping it will fit within the "system" similar to the "Medium" switch.
You can download (at your own risk!) these "add-on" elements for BlueBrick from my website at www.brickdimensions.com/resources/trains.
Happy layout planning and feedback/improvements/suggestions/etc. more than welcome!

Been aiming to have this set up for a while. I bought a new guide rail system and extra counterweight. so, now I can hopefully use my 66mm William Optics refractor as a guide scope for my C8 SCT, meaning closer shots of deep sky objects.

This artist concept shows the 70-metric-ton configuration of NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) on the launchpad.
(Note: artist concept updated July 30, 2013)
The Space Launch System, or SLS, will be designed to carry the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, as well as important cargo, equipment and science experiments to Earth's orbit and destinations beyond.
America’s new heavy-lift rocket will be the largest launch vehicle ever built and more powerful than the Saturn V rocket that carried Apollo astronauts to the moon. The 70-metric-ton configuration (77 tons) will lift more than 154,000 pounds and will provide 10 percent more thrust than the Saturn V rocket. The 130-metric-ton-configuration (143 tons) will lift more than 286,000 pounds and provide 20 percent more thrust than the Saturn V.
The first SLS mission — Exploration Mission 1 — in 2017 will launch an uncrewed Orion spacecraft to demonstrate the integrated system performance of the SLS rocket and spacecraft prior to a crewed flight.

The Porsche 356 is a sports car which was first produced by Austrian company Porsche Konstruktionen GesmbH (1948–1949), and then by German company Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH (1950–1965). It was Porsche's first production automobile. Earlier cars designed by the Austrian company include Cisitalia Grand Prix race car, the Volkswagen Beetle, and Auto Union Grand Prix cars.
The 356 is a lightweight and nimble-handling, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-door available both in hardtop coupé and open configurations. Engineering innovations continued during the years of manufacture, contributing to its motorsports success and popularity. Production started in 1948 at Gmünd, Austria, where approximately 50 cars were built. In 1950 the factory relocated to Zuffenhausen, Germany, and general production of the 356 continued until April 1965, well after the replacement model 911 made its autumn 1963 debut. Of the 76,000 originally produced, approximately half survive.
The original price in 1948 for the 356 coupe was US$3,750. The 356 cabriolet cost US$4,250.

History
Prior to World War II Porsche designed and built three Type 64 cars for a 1939 Berlin-to-Rome race that was cancelled. In 1948 the mid-engine,[3] tubular chassis 356 prototype called "No. 1" was completed. This led to some debate as to the "first" Porsche automobile, but the 356 is considered by Porsche to be its first production model.[1][4]

The 356 was created by Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche (son of Ferdinand Porsche, founder of the German company), who founded the Austrian company with his sister, Louise. Like its cousin, the Volkswagen Beetle (which Ferdinand Porsche Sr. had designed), the 356 is a four-cylinder, air-cooled, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive car with unitized pan and body construction. The chassis was a completely new design as was the 356's body which was designed by Porsche employee Erwin Komenda, while certain mechanical components including the engine case and some suspension components were based on and initially sourced from Volkswagen. Ferry Porsche described the thinking behind the development of the 356 in an interview with the editor of Panorama, the PCA magazine, in September 1972. "...I had always driven very speedy cars. I had an Alfa Romeo, also a BMW and others. ….By the end of the war I had a Volkswagen Cabriolet with a supercharged engine and that was the basic idea. I saw that if you had enough power in a small car it is nicer to drive than if you have a big car which is also overpowered. And it is more fun. On this basic idea we started the first Porsche prototype. To make the car lighter, to have an engine with more horsepower…that was the first two seater that we built in Carinthia (Gmünd)".
The first 356 was road certified in Austria on June 8, 1948, and was entered in a race in Innsbruck where it won its class.[6] Porsche re-engineered and refined the car with a focus on performance. Fewer and fewer parts were shared between Volkswagen and Porsche as the 1950s progressed. The early 356 automobile bodies produced at Gmünd were handcrafted in aluminum, but when production moved to Zuffenhausen, Germany in 1950, models produced there were steel-bodied. The aluminium bodied cars from that very small company are what are now referred to as "prototypes". Porsche contracted Reutter to build the steel bodies and eventually bought the Reutter company in 1963.[7] The Reutter company retained the seat manufacturing part of the business and changed its name to "Recaro".
Little noticed at its inception, mostly by a small number of auto racing enthusiasts, the first 356s sold primarily in Austria and Germany. It took Porsche two years, starting with the first prototype in 1948, to manufacture the first 50 automobiles. By the early 1950s the 356 had gained some renown among enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic for its aerodynamics, handling, and excellent build quality. The class win at Le Mans in 1951 was a factor.[8] It was common for owners to race the car as well as drive them on the streets. They introduced the four-cam racing "Carrera" engine, a totally new design and unique to Porsche sports cars, in late 1954. Increasing success with its racing and road cars brought Porsche orders for over 10,000 units in 1964, and by the time 356 production ended in 1965 approximately 76,000 had been produced.[1]
The 356 was built in four distinct series, the original ("pre-A"), followed by the 356 A, 356 B, and finally the 356 C. To distinguish among the major revisions of the model, 356s are generally classified into a few major groups. The 356 coupés and "cabriolets" (soft-tops) built through 1955 are readily identifiable by their split (1948 to 1952) or bent (centre-creased, 1953 to 1955) windscreens. In late 1955 the 356 A appeared, with a curved windshield. The A was the first road going Porsche to offer the Carrera four-cam engine as an option. In late 1959 the T5 356 B appeared; followed by the redesigned T6 series 356 B in 1962. The final version was the 356 C, little changed from the late T6 B cars but disc brakes replaced the drums.
Prior to completion of 356 production, Porsche had developed a higher-revving 616/36 version of the 356's four-cylinder pushrod engine for installation in a new 912 model that commenced production in April 1965. Although the 912 used numerous 356 components, Porsche did not intended for the 912 to replace the 356.
When the decision was made to replace the 356, the 901 (later 911) was the road car designed to carry the Porsche name forward. The 912 was developed as the "standard version" of the 911 at the 17,500DM price of a 356 1600 SC, while the complex but faster and heavier six-cylinder 911 was priced more than fifty percent higher.[9] Customers purchased nearly 33,000 912 coupés and Targas powered by the Type 616 engine that had served Porsche so well during the 356 era.
From the earliest, 1,100 cc Gmünd beginnings, the overall shape of the 356 remained more or less set. In 1951, 1,300 and 1,500 cc engines with considerably more power were introduced. By late 1952 the divided windscreen was gone, replaced by a V-shaped unit which fit into the same opening. In 1953, the 1300 S or "Super" was introduced, and the 1,100 cc engine was dropped. In late-1954 Max Hoffman, the sole US importer of Porsches, convinced Porsche to build a stripped down roadster version with minimal equipment and a cut-down windscreen. Towards the end of the original 356's time (in 1955, when the 356 A was about to be introduced) Hoffman, wanting a model name rather than just a number, got the factory to use the name "Continental" which was applied mostly to cars sold in the United States. Ford, makers of the Lincoln Continental, sued.[10] This name was used only in 1955 and today this version is especially valued. For 1956, the equivalent version was briefly sold as the "European".[10] Today all of the earliest Porsches are highly coveted by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide based on their design, reliability and sporting performance.

In late 1955, with numerous small but significant changes, the 356 A was introduced. Its internal factory designation, "Type 1", gave rise to its nickname "T1" among enthusiasts. In the US 1,200 early 356s had been badged as the "Continental" and then a further 156 from autumn 1955 to January 1956 as an even rarer T1 “European” variant after which it reverted to its numerical 356 designation. In early 1957 a second revision of the 356 A was produced, known as Type 2 (or T2). Production of the Speedster peaked at 1,171 cars in 1957 and then started to decline. The four-cam "Carrera" engine, initially available only in the spyder race cars, became an available option starting with the 356 A.
Within the last 25 years, replicas of the 356 A have become very popular.
Most typical engine was a 1,582 cc (1.6 L; 96.5 cu in) 4-cylinder boxer air-cooled naturally aspirated Pushrod OHV 2 valves per cylinder valvetrain, with dual downdraft Zenith carburetors, producing 60 PS (59 hp; 44 kW) @ 4500 rpm and a maximum torque of 110 N⋅m (81 lb⋅ft; 11 kg⋅m) @ 2800 rpm

Eastern Airlines Lockheed Super Constellation model L1049C was converted to a cargo configuration by the early 1960's. This was originally a passenger aircraft, but once the jet airliners arrived in the late 1950's, these aricraft were delegated to secondary service, shuttle service and were used for stand-by-service. Because the Constellations were not really old aircraft, many were converted into cargo aircraft. Some of the newer models such as the Lockheed Super G & H Constellations stayed in revenue passenger service for sometime after the jet airliners arrived. These Constellations cruised at speeds over 300 mph, with top speeds over 330 mph. They had extremely long range, much beyond what any of the jet airliners had during this era, and even beyond at 5,150 miles, plus even longer distances with wing tip fuel tanks. These Constellation's could also fly at altitudes in the 23,00 foot range, above most weather conditions. An interesting feature of this aircraft is that the cargo paint scheme utilized at this time differed from the standard Eastern Airlines passenger aircraft paint scheme. Notice what appears to be an old Douglas DC3 by the open hanger doors on the right.
Personally I have many fond memories of flying in these Super Constellations back in the day on Eastern Airlines and they were my favorite propeller driven commercial aircraft. To me they just had a style all their own that was pleasing to the eye, plus some good plush comfortable seats with leg room. The last Eastern Airlines Constellation that I flew in was in December 1962, when I had a standby ticket from Chicago to Tampa on a late morning jet airliner flight that was over sold. At this time I was in the U.S. Navy and could purchase stand-by tickets at reduced costs. Was asked would I like to wait for a late afternoon jet airliner to Tampa or would I like to take off right now on a propeller aircraft that would land in Saint Petersburg instead of Tampa, and I said yes because that's where I was going anyway. The ticket reservation agent told me that both the later morning jet flight and the multiple stop propeller plane would land at the same time, great I said! Had my guitar with me and a small suit case and I walked out to the plane on an apron to the boarding stairs up to a Lockheed Super G Constellation. The stewardess at that time, a cute young thing, said sir with your standby ticket we can only seat you in first class, do you mind, well that will be OK. At this time I was 19 and with no questions being asked, the stewardess asked would you like a beer or something else, but I chose the beer and had one good flight to my home destination. We had three stops in route prior to arriving at my final destination, Indianappolis, Cincinatti, Atlanta and then Saint Petersburg. Really did enjoy flying in a Constellation.

This image illustrates the overall Hubble Space Telescope (HST) configuration. Hubble is the product of a partnership between NASA, the European Space Agency, contractors, and the international community of astronomers. It is named after Edwin P. Hubble, an American astronomer who discovered the expanding nature of the universe and was the first to realize the true nature of galaxies.
The purpose of Hubble, the most complex and sensitive optical telescope ever made, is to study the cosmos from a low Earth orbit. By placing the telescope in space, astronomers are able to collect data that is free of Earth's atmosphere. Hubble detects objects 25 times fainter than the dimmest objects seen from Earth and provides astronomers with an observable universe 250 times larger than is visible from ground-based telescopes, extending our view more than 13 billion light-years away. Hubble views galaxies, stars, planets, comets, planet formation in other solar systems, and even unusual phenomena such as quasars, with 10 times the clarity of ground-based telescopes.
The major elements of Hubble are the Optical Telescope Assembly (OTA), the Support System Module (SSM), and the Scientific Instruments (SI). Hubble is approximately the size of a railroad car, with two cylinders joined together and wrapped in a silvery reflective heat shield blanket. Wing-like solar arrays extend horizontally from each side of these cylinders, and dish-shaped anternas extend above and below the body of the telescope. Hubble was deployed from the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-31 mission) into Earth orbit in April 1990.
The Marshall Space Flight Center was responsible for the design, development, and construction of the observatory. The Perkin-Elmer Corporation in Danbury, Connecticut, developed the optical system and guidance sensors. The Lockheed Missile and Space Company of Sunnyvale, California, produced the protective outer shroud and spacecraft systems, and assembled and tested the finished telescope.
