1997's Dark Forces II featured a new game engine. The previous game technology was similar to Doom's 2.5D, but with 3D objects (I've not played it). The new engine had massive draw-distances, but a relative lack of detail. This was good at creating huge structures (including a skyscraper, which you eventually reach the top of), but the trade off was a lack of detail, and repeating textures.

The photo above is a rubbish processing plant. I'm guessing it wasn't built with aesthetics in mind, and the huge expanse of unadorned aluminium sidings reminds me of the game. I doubt the weathering at the top of the pale area in the centre would be recreated, in-game.

(nostalgic reflection: when I played the demo of this game, the first creature I encountered was an Ugnaught, a benign character which if you slaughter mindlessly, leads to The Dark Side. I was delighted to find something in a computer game which was finally indifferent to me, rather than determined to cause my death. Their only vocalisation sounds comically like "do you love me?")

YOU DON'T KNOW JACK was a great computer trivia game in the 1990's and 2000's for PC and Mac. It provided hours of fun for all. This is my homage to that great game. The lettering is a little different to not break the Registered Trademark.

And that's all folks!

It's a really funny feeling when you finally finish a game. You feel satisfied because you have concluded a very enjoyable game, but that quickly wears off and you get that 'well, what now?' feeling instead.

Still, Fallout 3 was a terrific game.

I first played this game in 2008, four years after it first came out. While this might not seem long, this is an entire console generation. The game engine on which it is based is (at the time of writing) two version numbers further on.

Splinter Cell is set in the (then) future world of 2004, this helped distance it from the 16C steam punk of Thief: The Dark project, and the batty world of Metal Gear Solid, the other popular stealth games of the time.

The environments of Splinter Cell are resolutely modern: while older building do appear, much of it takes place in concrete buildings with plasterboard walls and generic, industrial design.

This is certainly not a criticism: Half Life proved that it's not where your game is set which is important: it's the fresh eyes you can bring to such environments.

Unfortunately, as the above photo shows, this was all a little too much for my camera: the richness of the blacks in the game is probably beyond it, or at least beyond my skills. I'm also pretty sure Splinter Cell was released before bright LED lighting became so widespread.

...even though he had no clue what he was doing...
