Hank Ballard & The Midnighters, ‘What You Get When the Getting Gets Good’. A rocking Charley Records compilation from 1985. Charley, along with Ace, are the best re-issue specialists in the world; sourcing the best original master tapes, sensitive remastering, and the loving care spent on design and packaging. Now you know. Anyway, Hank Ballard wrote ‘The Twist’, made HUGE by Chubby Checker. Hank’s version from 1958 is here and is more R&B than what you’re probably used to. I think it’s better. Ooh, controversial…
Hank had a great soul voice like Jackie Wilson, high pitch in tone. The songs here span from 1954 to 1961. ‘Work with Me Annie’, ‘Don’t Change Your Pretty Ways’, ‘Rock and Roll Wedding’, ‘Rock, Granny, Roll’ and ‘Sexy Ways’ are early rock n roll shuffle with shoobedoowop vocals, tinkling piano, wailing sax and guitar licks. Tight and swinging. ‘Open Your Back Door’ (rude) is a dirty guitar blues riff. ‘Tore Up Over You’ a slow bump and grind blues riff. ‘Is Your Love For Real’ has twangy rockabilly guitar. ‘Teardrops on Your Letter’ is slow doo-wop balladry with gentle piano and yearning vibrato vocal from Hank. ‘Kansas City’ is one of the best versions of the song, ever. Thumping piano, oohs, splashing cymbals, honking sax. ‘Sugaree’ is a joyous blast of noise with tight drums, guitar riff, stop/start dynamics, a ripping sax solo and one of my fave lead guitar breaks ever – I mean, face melting. Play LOUD. ‘Finger Poppin’ Time’, ‘What is This I See’, and ‘Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go’ follow the Twist formula with bouncy beats, handclaps, sax, doo-wopping. ‘I’m Gonna Miss You’ ends the set with Little Milton-esque smooth blues, an end-of-the-dance smooch number.
Let’s twist again, like we did before the Lockdown!

While this is the earliest official state map of Massachusetts, its importance far exceeds its local interest. It was also one of the earliest state maps published after American independence and its compilation provided a model for other states. Carleton, a highly respected Boston mathematician and geographer, proposed this project in 1791. The state legislature sanctioned his proposal on June 18, 1794, when it passed a resolution directing the selectmen of every town to prepare a survey. By June 1795, 265 town maps had been submitted, from which Carleton compiled a single comprehensive map of the state.

what, can't have it all?!
A project from 2006, at EGM's.
This project got published several times in Holland (de Architect October 2007, "A Tradition of Change" Staro Nai publishers January 2009), due to it being the built form of a new educational approach making it a somewhat experimental school building. Experiential learning, or 'learning by doing', are the central teaching methods. The central study and work spaces show most clearly this philosophy. These areas form the core of the four storey building.
Colour is used to represent each professional field: red represents expression, blue stands for maths, physics and chemistry, orange for languages and green for 'Man & Society " (geography, history).
The domains are arranged as an open space surrounded by instructional and class rooms that are partly open, partly closed off, and staff rooms. In the class rooms complex topics are explained and tests conducted. Other tasks can optionally be done in the open spaces or in the main workspace provided.
For small groups a "work unit" was designed, emphasized by a striped carpet. Perpendicular to this element long wooden work benches provide individual as well as group study possibilities.
The budget was tight so the spacial solutions as well as the choice of materials had to be economical and also done inventively to prevent the school from becoming bland and uninspiring.
A lot of industrial materials were used, but only so to make an unusual use of them, for example the ceilings were done by using reinforcement steel grids, used normally to strengthen concrete. Acoustics were dealt with by means of a special plaster on the ceilings, partly made of shredded recycled paper. Light fixtures are held into position with tie-wraps. Walls are made up of underlayment board and oriented strand board, floors are coated with concrete paint. The building's facades are made of stucco, Hardi plank (a very cheap cement board with a dark brown coating), and blue coated, moulded polyester panels, hiding the multi coloured sunscreen rolls. The furniture design was partly done by Hollandse Nieuwe, a dutch design firm.
Although succesful in many ways the school is currently suffering from a lack of space for housing the ever rising number of new pupils each year...
This is my first attempt at creating a painting. Any comments, critical or complimentary will be appreciated.

**View it big or I'll send the boys round!**
One thing that's always struck me about Caitlin as I've got to know her a little over the last few months is that her slightly 'alternative' and dare I say 'hippy-esque' dress sense is a bit of a breath of fresh air. She's completely comfortable in this, which is I think rare. It's genuine, she dresses like she does because it's who she is I think, instead of some fake fashion following 'I'm a hippy this week' fad. I dig it, I dig it a lot.
When the idea first came to me to shoot her, it was with her embedded in a mass of flowers, what with her being a florist and all. Seeing as I'm skint, that idea went out the window, so it was a sense of back to nature I tried to achieve. So one Saturday recently, I sat there and took her photograph as she kicked off her jandals and made daisy chains. Man, inside, I was smiling so much. :-)
the original TIFF file of the artwork looks alot better than the uploaded JPEG version! I'm going to try printing the disc label onto transparent self-adhesive film to overlay on a TDK "Ho" type disc.
my chosen tracklist on the 80 minute MiniDisc is as below, I cut the DJ & alien dialogue from the beginning of "Calling Occupants" in order to shorten the overall running time to allow a 22nd track to fit on.

A look around Victoria Park Tipton on a very cold early winter's day (last day of November 2017).
The park is between both parts of the Birmingham Canal Navigations. The New Main Line (Birmingham Level) is to the north of the park, while the Old Main Line (Wolverhampton Level) is to the south.
The park is surrounded by Queens Road, Victoria Road, Mayfair Gardens, Boscobel Avenue, Park Lane West, Hill Street and Manor Road.
Victoria Park is a public park situated in Tipton, West Midlands (formerly Staffordshire), England.
It was opened on 29 July 1901 and named in honour of Queen Victoria, who had died in January of that year.
860 people in the Tipton area had signed a petition in 1893 for the development of a town park, and after sufficient donations and funding had been made available, development of the park was underway during 1899, although it was not fully complete until just after the official opening.
It was situated on Randalls Lane, Tipton Green, which was promptly renamed Victoria Road. Substantial housing development took place in the vicinity over the next 40 years and most of the houses are still in existence today.
The park includes a large lake, tennis courts, children's play area and a Cenotaph which was erected in 1921 in memory of the Tipton men who fallen in the Great War. The names of the Second World War dead were added after that conflict ended in 1945.
A park keeper's bungalow was erected in the 1930s but had fallen into disuse by 1990, finally being demolished in 2005.
Tipton Harriers hold a 5k road race every November in the park.
I headed to the Mayfair Gardens entrance after I originally left via Park Lane West, to see the war memorial.
The Tipton War Memorial is Grade II Listed.
Summary
A borough war memorial, sited in Victoria Park, of c1921.
Description
A borough war memorial, sited in Victoria Park, of c 1921.
MATERIALS: the body of the memorial is of grey granite.
DESCRIPTION: It takes the form of an obelisk, standing on a square, tapered plinth with a stepped platform. the obelisk is plain and divided from the plinth by a large-scale cavetto moulding. The tapered sides of the polished plinth are inscribed in gilded Gothic script which reads: ‘Resurgam / +Laus Deo+’ (south side); ‘Our / Glorious / Dead’ (west side); ‘1914-1919 / The / Great War’ (north side) and ‘Honoured / for / Evermore’ (east side). On the north side on the top and riser of the upper step is inscribed, in Roman script: ‘AND / 1939-1945 / THE WORLD WAR’. The plinth rises above two steps and below this is a square platform.
This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 10 November 2017.
History
The Tipton war memorial was unveiled by the Marquis of Cambridge on 24 August 1921. The names of the fallen were inscribed on two oak boards which were formerly placed in the borough library, sited at the south end of the park. The library moved to Owen House, Unity Walk in the early C21 and the boards are now housed there. Photographs of the unveiling ceremony show that the monument was originally surrounded by rockwork, with a flight of steps to one side.
Reasons for Listing
Tipton War Memorial, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: as an accomplished and well-realised war memorial which takes the simple form of an obelisk;
* Group value: with the drinking fountain canopy (Grade II).

Wim Delvoye - Labour of Love - Noordbrabants Museum Den Bosch, the Netherlands
Fun, provocative, and rebellious: these words perfectly describe the artworks by Belgian artist, Wim Delvoye. His work reflects his extraordinary skill, but it is also full of contradictions. This is the first solo exhibition in the Netherlands by this internationally renowned artist. You will discover that nothing is what it seems in this impressive compilation of his work. Wim Delvoye has a fondness for traditional handicrafts and skilled workmanship. His boundless productivity has led to this particular eclectic collection of artworks: from gas canisters decorated with Delft Blue patterns and gothic trucks to his stained glass windows with x-rays of the human body. Delvoye likes to play with opposites. He is always looking for ways to bring together arts and craft, popular culture, and fine art.
Delvoye manages to effortlessly sneak in all kinds of everyday objects into the world of art, including car tyres, suitcases, and ironing boards. He marries them together with highly valuable materials or religious images. The result is strange and confusing combinations that allow you to step back and observe recognizable objects in a different light. Wim Delvoye collaborates with specialists from all over the world. He visits artisan workshops and factories in various countries in search of the finest quality. A good example of this is his series of aluminium suitcases that he asked Iranian metalworkers to decorate for him. Wim Delvoye views society critically and with irony. Delvoye has won international acclaim for his artwork, particular for his Cloaca series. His artworks are on exhibit in museums all over the world. His previous solo exhibitions were held in the Royal Museum of Fine Art in Brussels, the Louvre in Paris, and The Contemporary Art Museum of Luxembourg. Wim Delvoye: Labour of Love is the first solo exhibition in the Netherlands of Wim Delvoye's work.
