Description: Tengku Ampuan Jemaah Mosque, a mosque in Bukit Jelutong, Selangor, Malaysia. Waking up that morning to a clear morning before the blue hour, I visited the mosque which I have not visited for quite a long time. While the mosque is quite a distance from home, I am glad that I made that travel as the colors that illuminates the mosuqe that morning was to me, kinda surreal and beautiful. Alhamdulillah.

Chestnut-breasted Mannikin
Scientific Name: Lonchura castaneothorax
Description: The Chestnut-breasted Mannikin is a thick-set brown finch with a grey crown, black face and a heavy grey bill. It has a chestnut brown breast divided from white underparts by a black bar. The rump and tail are golden orange, with a black undertail. Females are paler than males and young birds are uniformly olive-brown above, pale below with a brown-buff chest and no black face or chest bar. Like other finches, this species is a very social bird and is most often seen in flocks.
Similar species: The related Yellow-rumped Mannikin, L. flaviprymna, which lacks the black face and chest bar, can interbreed with the Chestnut-breasted Mannikin and produce intermediate forms.
Distribution: The Chestnut-breasted Mannikin is found across northern and eastern coastal Australia, from the Kimberley region, Northern Territory, to the Shoalhaven River, New South Wales. It is also found in New Guinea.
Habitat: The Chestnut-breasted Mannikin is found in reed beds, long grasses, swamps and mangroves.
Seasonal movements: Locally nomadic, especially in the north. Can form flocks of several hundred birds.
Feeding: The Chestnut-breasted Mannikin feeds on grass seeds, usually on the stalk rather than from the ground. It will also eat winged termites at the beginning of breeding season.
Breeding: The Chestnut-breasted Mannikin nests in colonies, with the nests close together in grass clumps, sugar cane or reeds, less than 2 m from the ground. The rounded nest is made from green or dried grass blades and is lined with fine grasses. It lacks an entrance tunnel but the entrance may have a hood. Both parents build the nest, incubate the eggs and feed the young, but only the female stays in the nest overnight.
Calls: Bell-like or drawn-out: 'teet'.
Minimum Size: 10cm
Maximum Size: 12cm
Average size: 11cm
Average weight: 14g
Breeding season: Spring and autumn in south; with rains in north
Clutch Size: 4 to 6 eggs
Incubation: 13 days
Nestling Period: 22 days

Many thanks for your visits, faves and comments. Cheers.
Last flames in the silky oaks of a bushfire in the desert uplands in November 2012 which burnt out about 50,000 hectares..
I like this part of outback Australia around Barcaldine. The textures of the dense woodland against the red soil are wonderful under the bright light.
The Desert Uplands Region covers 75,000 square kilometers of Outback Queensland. Straddling the Great Dividing Range and between coastal and inland catchments, this elevated landscape has created unique internally draining lakes and is the headwaters of two major catchments (the Burdekin and Lake Eyre Basin) that almost split the region in half, north-south.
1182169628_desert_uplands_map.jpg
The region extends to the north of the Flinders Highway near Torrens Creek whilst the southern boundary is approximately 50 km north west of Tambo. The area is bounded by a line from Blackall to Hughenden through Barcaldine in the west and the Belyando River in the east. Towns within the Desert Uplands are Barcaldine, Jericho, Alpha, Hughenden, Prairie, Torrens Creek, Pentland, Aramac, and Muttaburra.
The term âdesert' is used to describe the bioregion because of the abundance of spinifex, a hardy, spiny-leaved tussock forming grass common to the drier inland areas of Australia and the predominant red coloured soils, along with the semi-arid climate. Although the soils are sandy, the area is well covered with native trees, shrubs and grasses, unlike the traditional view of a desert comprising loose, slow moving sand dunes. The red earths of the Desert Uplands are morphologically and chemically similar to the soils of the Mulga lands.
The Desert Uplands Bioregion is characterised by hard, red sandy soils with relatively low fertility. Sandstone ridges and sand plains dominate the landscape, supporting predominantly native pastures, including; spinifex (Triodia pungens spp.), wire grasses (Aristida spp.), and small patches of Mitchell grass (Astrebla spp.). Buffel (Cenchrus ciliaris) grass, an introduced pasture species can be found throughout the region. The majority of the area is heavily timbered with species such as Desert oak (Acacia coriacea), Gidyea (Acacia cambagei), Box (Eucalyptus populnea), Ironbark (Eucalyptus melanophloia), Yellow Jacket (Eucalyptus similis), and a number of Wattles (Acacia spp.).
Sandstone ranges and sand and clay plains dominate, with Mitchell grasslands in the west and narrow patches of Brigalow in the east. To the north the region abuts granite ranges and basalt tablelands. To the south the sandstone continues into the Carnavon Ranges. (Source: www.desertuplands.org.au)

Splendid Fairy-wren
Scientific Name: Malurus splendens
Description: The breeding plumage of the male is predominantly blue, varying from cobalt-blue in the east of its range to violet-blue in the west.It has black bands at the base of the tail (absent in the violet-blue birds), across the breast and from the beak, through the eyes to join a band across the back of its neck. Its crown and cheek patches are paler blue. Wings and long tail are brown with a blue wash. His beak is black and his legs and feet are brown-grey. In non-breeding plumage, called eclipse, he is very similar to the female, being pale brown above and buff to white underneath although he retains the blue wash on wings and tail. The female does not have the blue wash on her wings, but does have a reddish-tan line from beak to eye that extends into a ring around her eye. Her beak is reddish-tan.
Similar species: The male in breeding plumage is quite distinct but in eclipse he is similar to the males of other fairy-wrens in eclipse. A faint wash of blue on male wings during eclipse distinguishes this species from others. The female is similar to females of other fairy-wren species, but has a bluer tail than most.
Distribution: These birds are widely distributed across Australia in two areas. One area is from about Shark Bay south through WA, through SA except the coast to about the Flinders Ranges and the southern and central parts of NT. The eastern area include SA from the Flinders Ranges, the far north-western tip of Vic, NSW east to about Moree and Balranald and south central Qld.
Habitat: These birds live in arid to semi-arid areas, in mostly dense shrublands or woodlands of acacia, and mallee eucalypt with dense shrubs.
Seasonal movements: These birds are mostly sedentary, defending a territory all year, but the younger females may disperse to another territory. In some areas they are semi-nomadic, depending on local conditions.
Feeding: Like most of the fairy-wrens, Splendid Fairy-wrens eat mostly insects and forage on both the ground and in shrubs. They live in groups which forage together.
Breeding: The Splendid Fairy-wren female builds an oval domed nest of dry grass, strips of bark and rootlets, with an entrance two thirds of the way up one side. The female is the only member of the group to incubate the eggs, but all members of the group feed the chicks.
Calls: A rapid series of slightly metallic, high-pitched pips that blend into an "undulating" call.
Minimum Size: 12cm
Maximum Size: 14cm
Average size: 13cm
Average weight: 9g
Breeding season: mostly September-December, but can extend from August to April
Clutch Size: 2 to 4, mostly 3
Incubation: 15 days
Nestling Period: 11 days
