As the sun set today the temperature was a cool 30°F and shortly after sunset it dropped down to 26°F and now at 10:13 P.M. it's down to 19°F and the wind is blowing out of the northeast at about 7-15 mph, it's going to be a cold night.

This morning was bitterly cold, but the three of us, (Sasha, Rosanna and myself) ventured out into the cold anyway! I felt incredibly mean asking Sasha to take off her lovely warm coat, but she bravely did when I asked. She put on my big long gloves and pretended she was warm!
I can't believe how much the weather can change the light and landscape - it's wonderful! I absolutely love winter now! :D

It was cold with a blustery North West wind blowing today, typical for early November here.
We had a dusting of snow overnight that melted off by mid morning and late this afternoon a flock of migrating ducks settled on the pond to overnight.
There was ice in the leaves on the ground this morning from the rain we got yesterday, we can feel winters cold breath coming.
Haven't had much snow lately so I've been having fun with all the snow this year so far. Hope everyone is staying warm with all the cold weather we've been having lately.
...this favorite season is about to come to a close as the weatherman is predicting icy cold temperatures for the next several nights!
Milford Sound is a beautiful fjord in the south west of New Zealand's South Island, within Fiordland National Park...sometimes described as The Eighth Wonder of the World.
Taken from onboard the two-story scenic cruise boat "Milford Sovereign" (capacity 300+ guests) on a cold and windy day. In the backdrop is the iconic Mitre Peak, with a couple of the similar boats (...yes can you see them?) in the photo providing an idea of the relative scale:-)

Luosto is a picturesque ski village with a surprisingly large number of accommodations. Although there are a few hotels, you'll mostly find cozy bungalows here. Luosto is nestled in the heart of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, surrounded by ancient forests, rugged gorges, and peat bogs. It's a unique piece of nature rarely seen in our part of Europe. Finnish Lapland is far to the north, so there's usually plenty of snow here. Luosto offers a stunning landscape for adventurous activities and the opportunity to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the Finnish wilderness. Our plan is to climb the spectacular fell (mountain). As we step out of the car, it feels like nature here is in a deep winter sleep. Our hike begins at dawn in the remote hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien. In Lapland, the colors of the sky during sunrise and sunset can be very intense due to the low position of the sun on the horizon. The long twilight periods can create unique colors in the sky, including green hues, due to various scattering effects of sunlight. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow.
We walk along the ridge of the fells of Ukko-Luosto, passing through the surrounding primeval forest. The summer path to the top is closed due to avalanche danger, so we continue our journey and attempt to reach the summit via the northern ridge of Ukko-Luosto. The path ascends steeply through the enchanting ancient forests, where the trees covered in crown snow look magical. The last section to the top of the mountain has snow too deep for us. The path winds its way to the top of Pikku-Luosto Fell. We sink in and have to crawl to the top. Snowshoes are definitely necessary here. In the impressive Ukko-Luosto Scenic Hut, we can take a break, warm up, and admire the magnificent view. It's terribly cold up here on the 514-meter-high mountain, partly due to the biting polar wind. The sun reaches its highest point on this short January day and shines beautifully just over the mountain's peak. There's also a solar halo visible, an optical phenomenon caused by the refraction, reflection, and scattering of light by ice crystals in the atmosphere. We thaw out a bit and rest before starting our return journey. Walking in the snow is exhausting. We take the same route back because we don't want to get stuck in deep snow and aim to be back in Luosto before dark. In total, we walked more than 18,000 steps, but we enjoyed this special place in Lapland. In Luosto, we treated ourselves to delicious reindeer jerky and panna cotta, while BieJee savored a reindeer burger.

Ons plan is om de spectaculaire fell (berg) te beklimmen. Wanneer we uit de auto stappen, lijkt de natuur hier in een diepe winterslaap te verkeren. We ontdooien nog even en rusten uit voordat we beginnen aan onze terugreis. Wandelen in de sneeuw is zwaar. We nemen dezelfde route terug omdat we niet vast willen komen te zitten in de diepe sneeuw en we in ieder geval voor het donker terug willen zijn in Luosto. In totaal hebben we meer dan 18.000 stappen gezet, maar we hebben genoten van deze speciale plek in Lapland. In Luosto hebben we onszelf getrakteerd op heerlijke rendier-jerky en panna cotta, terwijl BieJee genoot van een rendierburger.

The Pyrenees also spelled Pyrenées Spanish: Pirineos; French: Pyrénées; Catalan: Pirineus; Occitan: Pirenèus; Aragonese: Perinés; Basque: Pirinioak are a range of mountains in southwest Europe that form a natural border between France and Spain. They separate the Iberian Peninsula from the rest of continental Europe, and extend for about 430 km. For the most part, the main crest forms a massive divider between France and Spain, with the tiny country of Andorra sandwiched in between. The Col d'Aubisque above is a mountain pass in the Pyrenees 30km south of Tarbes and Pau in the department of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the Aquitaine region of France. The Aubisque is one of those hors catégorie cols that make the legend of the Tour de France.
We were high up in the Pyrenees at the top of the Col d'aubisque even higher at 1,750 m. The weather had been cold, cold enough for snow on the top of the mountains. The white mountain tops are reaching here higher than 2600 meters. The highest peak in the Pyrenees is 3,404 meters high.

Cool fact: The Mallard is the ancestor of nearly all domestic duck breeds. They prefer calm, shallow sanctuaries, but can be found in almost any body of freshwater across Asia, Europe, and North America. They’re also found in saltwater and brackish water and are commonly found in wetlands.

Birds of prey are birds that hunt for food primarily on the wing, using their keen senses, especially vision. They are defined as any bird that hunts other animals. Their talons and beaks tend to be relatively large, powerful and adapted for tearing and/or piercing flesh. Large birds of prey have always been persecuted and have only found refuge in the most inaccessible parts of mountain ranges, often at very high altitudes. Although protected for the past twenty years or so, they show no inclination to recolonize the lower altitudes and plains. The Pyrenees were the last refuge in the whole of France for certain species, while offering shelter to birds of prey known in other mountains. It is this wealth of wildlife that the various nature reserves throughout the range -from the national park in the west to eastern reserves- all aim to conserve. In the 1970s, just before birds of prey were placed under legal protection, the situation was critical. Today, most small and medium bird of prey populations have risen to an acceptable level. The larger birds of prey are more sensitive to disturbances of all kinds. The time taken before reaching sexual maturity, the few young born per couple the long breeding period and the numerous failures all serve to slow down reproduction and hinder the renewal of generations. Higher up in the mountains, above the tree line, we enter their territory. This is where you might be lucky enough to spot a Royal Eagle. The eagle is a hunter by nature. In the Alps, they have become expert marmot catchers. Marmots have been successfully introduced into the Pyrenees in several different places. But they have not spread everywhere yet and eagles have to content themselves with smaller prey: squirrels, voles, moles and reptiles appear regularly on their menu. We should always keep one eye on the sky in the hopes of seeing a fleeting silhouette or even the soaring flight of one of these large birds of prey in their own domain. Large Birds of Prey which can be spotted in the Pyrenees are: Peregrine falcon, Royal Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, Griffion Vulture, Beared Vulture -Lammergeier and Golden Eagle.

I was lucky to spot a Beared Vulture -Lammergeier which suddenly cames out from the fog above my head . A Bird of Prey with a wing-span of 3 metres.
Het nationaal park van de Pyreneeën is een waar beschermd heiligdom van de natuur en observatiepunt voor de wilde fauna gemzen, roofvogels, marmotten, Pyreneese flora. Het Nationaal park van de Pyreneeën werd in 1967 gesticht en strekt zich uit over een oppervlakte van 500km2 van de Aspe-vallei -in het westen tot het massief van Néouvielle -in het oosten en eindigt aan de Spaanse grens. De fauna en flora en de schoonheid van de natuur zijn hier onaangeroerd gebleven. In dit gebied torenen de mooiste toppen van de Pyreneeën boven het landschap uit. Dit is ook het gebied van de grote roofvogels. In de jaren '70, vlak alvorens de roofvogels onder dierenbescherming werden geplaatst, was de situatie kritiek. Vandaag, zijn de meeste kleine en middelgrote roofvogel bevolkingsaantallen toegenomen op een aanvaardbaar niveau. De Pyreneeën was voor een aantal grote roofvogels het laatste toevluchtsoord in heel Frankrijk. In de Alpen, is o.a. de adelaar een deskundige marmotvanger geworden. De marmotten zijn nu ook met succes geïntroduceerd in de Pyreneeën in verscheidene verschillende plaatsen. Maar zijn nog lang niet overal verspreid en de adelaars moeten met kleinere prooien tevreden zijn zoals: de eekhoorns, de veldmuizen, mollen en reptielen. In het dunbevolktegebied van de pyreneeen zijn zeldzame soorten als Lammergier, Steenarend, Vale Gier en Dwergarend soms wel van 30 meter dichtbij te zien. Eigenlijk een prachtige plek om deze roofvogels te fotograferen. Hoog in de bergen geeft de aanblik van deze lammergier die plotseling uit de mist boven m'n hoofd zweeft, met prachtig oranje-gele verenkleed, een beeld wat mij altijd bij zal blijven.
Street photography is not really my thing. It doesn’t come natural for me, too much patience is involved. You have to wait for the right subject(s) and then catch the right moment. However, I am pushing myself to give it a try, so we’ll see how it goes.

Commonly seen on mountain tops and other moist and cool places, rime ice (or hard rime) is the frozen water droplets from fog. This one was on my front yard shrubs a couple of weeks ago. Cool and spiky!

Gourette is a winter sports resort in the French Pyrenees. It is located in the commune of Eaux-Bonnes in the département of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, on the D918 road which passes through the Col d'Aubisque mountain pass. The closest air access is Pau Pyrénées Airport. In winter, the resort offers one of the largest skiable areas in the Pyrenean chain with 30 marked pistes, and extending between 1,400 and 2,400 meters in altitude, covering about 90 hectares of mostly north-facing slopes. The area also hosts snowboarding and snowshoe trails. In 2005 the region spent over 50 million euros to improve its winter resort facilities, including trails, lifts, accommodation and other infrastructure. In summer, tourists visit the valley of the Gave d'Ossau and its lakes for sightseeing, hiking, biking, rock climbing, and mountaineering, including the ascent of Pic du Midi d'Ossau 2,884 metres. The French GR 10 hiking trail, which covers over 800 km from one end of the Pyrenees to the other, passes through the village.

Somewhere in the Antarctic Peninsula, from the Crow's Nest of the "beautiful, elegant, Oosterdam." These were the adjectives the captain used to describe his ship everyday for 22 days as he addressed us from the bridge. We started saying it with him!

De bomen buigen zachtjes onder het gewicht van de sneeuw. We lopen op de rug van de fells van Ukko-Luosto langs het oerbos in de bijzondere omgeving. Het zomerpad naar de top is afgesloten vanwege lawinegevaar, dus we vervolgen onze weg en proberen de top te bereiken via de noordelijke bergkam van Ukko-Luosto. Het pad loopt steil door de betoverende oerbossen, waar de bomen bedekt met kroonsneeuw er magisch uitzien. Het laatste gedeelte naar de top van de berg is de sneeuwlaag te diep voor ons. Het pad slingert zich een weg naar de top van Pikku-Luosto Fell. We zakken weg en moeten kruipen naar de top. Sneeuwschoenen zijn hier dus echt nodig. In de indrukwekkende Ukko-Luosto Scenic Hut kunnen we even bijkomen, op temperatuur komen en het magnifieke uitzicht bewonderen. Het is verschrikkelijk koud hier op de 514 meter hoge berg, mede door de strakke poolwind. De zon bereikt zijn hoogste punt op deze korte januaridag en schijnt prachtig net over de top van de berg. Ook is er een zonnehalo te zien, een optisch fenomeen dat ontstaat door de breking, reflectie en verstrooiing van licht door ijskristallen in de atmosfeer. We ontdooien nog even en rusten uit voordat we beginnen aan onze terugreis. Wandelen in de sneeuw is zwaar. We nemen dezelfde route terug omdat we niet vast willen komen te zitten in de diepe sneeuw en we in ieder geval voor het donker terug willen zijn in Luosto. In totaal hebben we meer dan 18.000 stappen gezet, maar we hebben genoten van deze speciale plek in Lapland. In Luosto hebben we onszelf getrakteerd op heerlijke rendier-jerky en panna cotta, terwijl BieJee genoot van een rendierburger.
