The Peace Monument also known as the Friendship Monument or the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument at the Jvari Pass in Georgia is a striking structure erected in 1983 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Georgian-Russian Treaty of Georgievsk 1783. This treaty marked the beginning of a closer political and military alliance between the Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti (in present-day Georgia) and the Russian Empire. Its purpose was to protect Georgia from invasions by hostile powers. The monument is built in the form of a semicircular stone structure and is located at a panoramic point along the Jvari Pass, a mountain pass on the Georgian Military Road. This area is located in the Caucasus Mountains and offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The monument consists of colorful mosaics depicting scenes from Georgian history and culture, as well as the theme of peace and unity. Although the monument was intended as a symbol of friendship between Georgia and Russia, it has attracted controversy in later years due to the complex historical and political relations between the two countries, particularly after Georgia's independence in 1991 and subsequent conflicts. Today, it is seen more as a tourist attraction than a political symbol. The monument is a popular stop for travelers exploring the Georgian Military Road due to its impressive views and historical significance.
A journey from Ananuri Fort through the Jvari Pass is one of the most impressive experiences you can have in Georgia. The contrast between the colorful autumn landscapes, the sudden snow-capped mountains, and the heavy mist is breathtaking and feels almost magical. The journey begins with the warm colors of autumn surrounding the historic Ananuri Fort. As you continue along the Georgian Military Road, nature slowly begins to change. The colorful forests gradually make way for bare mountain slopes, and the fresh mountain air becomes more noticeable. As you get closer to the Jvari Pass, the first signs of snow begin to appear. The peaks of the mountains seem sprinkled with sugar, and the temperature drops noticeably. As you ascend further, heavy mist starts to envelop the surroundings. The visibility becomes limited, and the world feels suddenly isolated and mysterious. Upon reaching the Jvari Pass, you arrive at the Peace Monument, where the mist hangs like a thin veil over the landscape. The colorful mosaics of the monument contrast beautifully with the white snow and the gray fog. The view from here, though partially obscured, is stunningly serene. The snow-capped peaks, frozen rivers, and icy air create an almost otherworldly atmosphere.

Paard van Marken (Horse of Marken) is the name of the lighthouse of Marken.

Het Paard van Marken is de vuurtoren van Marken. De vuurtoren is ontworpen door J. Valk en gebouwd in 1839 en staat op de oostelijke punt van het eiland. De toren heeft een hoogte van 16 meter en een lichtbereik van 16,7 km.
De toren is begonnen als een vierkante vuurbaak in 1700. Later werden er gebouwen aan de vuurtoren gebouwd, die de toren de karakteristieke vorm gaf. In 1814 kreeg de toren een mistbel. In 1839 is de ronde toren gebouwd op het fundament van de vuurbaak. In 1919 is de mistbel vervangen door een misthoorn.
Regelmatig heeft de vuurtoren last van kruiend ijs. In 1971 was dit zo erg dat de toren enkele centimeters van zijn plaats werd geduwd. Momenteel wordt de vuurtoren bewoond.
Sinds 1970 bezit de toren de status rijksmonument.

When the daily high temperature isn't much above freezing, I can't blame the squirrels too much for raiding the bird feeders.
BUT, when there is still plenty of "squirrel food" in several Goodie Bowls, I'm not at all thrilled to see the squirrels raiding the seed log. With graceful agility, this stinker was giving ALL the other squirrels a bad name with her gluttonous ways. I mean really!
*** Caught in the act while I was home sick on a Friday afternoon, recovering from an eye problem that is slowly getting better. It's hard to take pictures when you can't see all that well, so thankfully a few of them actually turned out.
On a cold winter day near Sande in Vestfold, Bogebukta opens toward the far end of Sandebukta, now sealed by a smooth layer of ice. Above it, a textured sky sends moving shadows sweeping across the frozen surface, creating a quiet but dynamic winter scene.
Fun fact: When a fjord or bay freezes over like this, subtle changes in cloud cover can make the light move across the ice much faster than across open water, making it perfect for dramatic timelapse sequences.

Yli-Nampa is located in the north of Finland, specifically in the Lapland region. This region is located above the Arctic Circle and is known for its vast forests, lakes and un-spoilt nature. Yli-Nampa itself is an area in Lapland that is suitable for outdoor activities such as hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing and experiencing northern nature and culture. During the month of January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night. This phenomenon occurs in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We set out early in the darkness on our way to Luosto. In Yli-Nampa, the moon shines beautifully over the forest while the sun has yet to rise, but the sky is beginning to lighten. The snow in Yli-Nampa lies like an untouched white carpet, and the trees are draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step breaks the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees bend gently under the weight of the snow, and nature seems to be in a deep winter slumber. The path is lined with pine trees adorned with ice crystals. The expanse of the snowy landscape stretches to the horizon, and the cold air tingles on my skin. The moment with the moon, surrounded by the white beauty of nature, is magical. Looking out over West Pond from our sun porch today, the ice still clings to the trees from our recent messy sleet, rain, snow and ice storm.
Although it was bright and sunny today the temperature never got above 30F which did not allow the ice on the trees to melt.

Luosto is a picturesque ski village with a surprisingly large number of accommodations. Although there are a few hotels, you'll mostly find cozy bungalows here. Luosto is nestled in the heart of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, surrounded by ancient forests, rugged gorges, and peat bogs. It's a unique piece of nature rarely seen in our part of Europe. Finnish Lapland is far to the north, so there's usually plenty of snow here. Luosto offers a stunning landscape for adventurous activities and the opportunity to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the Finnish wilderness. Our plan is to climb the spectacular fell (mountain). As we step out of the car, it feels like nature here is in a deep winter sleep. Our hike begins at dawn in the remote hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien. In Lapland, the colors of the sky during sunrise and sunset can be very intense due to the low position of the sun on the horizon. The long twilight periods can create unique colors in the sky, including green hues, due to various scattering effects of sunlight. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow.
We walk along the ridge of the fells of Ukko-Luosto, passing through the surrounding primeval forest. The summer path to the top is closed due to avalanche danger, so we continue our journey and attempt to reach the summit via the northern ridge of Ukko-Luosto. The path ascends steeply through the enchanting ancient forests, where the trees covered in crown snow look magical. The last section to the top of the mountain has snow too deep for us. The path winds its way to the top of Pikku-Luosto Fell. We sink in and have to crawl to the top. Snowshoes are definitely necessary here. In the impressive Ukko-Luosto Scenic Hut, we can take a break, warm up, and admire the magnificent view. It's terribly cold up here on the 514-meter-high mountain, partly due to the biting polar wind. The sun reaches its highest point on this short January day and shines beautifully just over the mountain's peak. There's also a solar halo visible, an optical phenomenon caused by the refraction, reflection, and scattering of light by ice crystals in the atmosphere. We thaw out a bit and rest before starting our return journey. Walking in the snow is exhausting. We take the same route back because we don't want to get stuck in deep snow and aim to be back in Luosto before dark. In total, we walked more than 18,000 steps, but we enjoyed this special place in Lapland. In Luosto, we treated ourselves to delicious reindeer jerky and panna cotta, while BieJee savored a reindeer burger.

Het is verschrikkelijk koud hier op de 514 meter hoge berg, mede door de strakke poolwind. De zon bereikt zijn hoogste punt op deze korte januaridag en schijnt prachtig net over de top van de berg. Ook is er een zonnehalo te zien, een optisch fenomeen dat ontstaat door de breking, reflectie en verstrooiing van licht door ijskristallen in de atmosfeer. We ontdooien nog even en rusten uit voordat we beginnen aan onze terugreis. Wandelen in de sneeuw is zwaar. We nemen dezelfde route terug omdat we niet vast willen komen te zitten in de diepe sneeuw en we in ieder geval voor het donker terug willen zijn in Luosto. In totaal hebben we meer dan 18.000 stappen gezet, maar we hebben genoten van deze speciale plek in Lapland. In Luosto hebben we onszelf getrakteerd op heerlijke rendier-jerky en panna cotta, terwijl BieJee genoot van een rendierburger.

It struck me how lovely they looked against the snow.
This grouping was particularly pleasing to my eye; the browns, oranges and blacks against the bright white. And the texture of their plumage.
I saw this group in Pennsylvania and I've read that before 1935, Canada geese were nowhere in the State, now they are present in every county.

It is very rare to see this type of weather in Muscat, Oman. It was a bit cold and cloudy and unluckily I forgot my camera at my home so I decided to take advantage of iPhone.
