A couple of years ago I went to the IBM building in NYC for Relavis eSales training. What sights! Thought I'd get away from the cruise photos and ran across this. Too much natural beauty can be really bad for a city girl's spirit. In fact, when I told my endo the other day that I had seen the Milky Way for the first time in over 30 years, she said I'd been in Houston way too long.
Thanks, everyone, for your visits, comments, favs and invitations. My trip to NYC made it into Explore today!

You'd be forgiven for thinking this was much further north, or even on another continent, but as the crow flies, it's only 150 miles from London to this stunning frozen phenomena where ice-climbers are flocking to put their crampons and ice-picks to the test before the giant frozen waterfall begins to thaw.
The one hundred foot icicles on Kinder Downfall have only just reached peak condition and are now ready for the brave to climb - if they can reach the remote location over 2000 feet up in the Peak District, just north of Buxton, Derbyshire.
Medical students, Marije Jansen, 30, and Sean Cox, 31 were the first climbers to reach the ice at eight o'clock this morning. Sean said: "I moved to Derby last September and I'd never have believed I'd be ice climbing in The Peak District this winter - you never quite know whether the ice is going to hold - it's a bit sketchy really, but it's just amazing."
Marije said: "When you climb on rocks you have to bend your body and squeeze through gaps - but climbing on ice feels like you are cheating - you just hack your way through it with your ice picks - is a bit like digging a way up through the ice with a Black and Decker."
Mountain Rescuer and Mountaineering Instructor, Nick Lord said: "It takes a week of temperatures below zero before Kinder Downfall freezes solid. Now it has, it should stay iced-up for a week or so even if things do start to thaw elsewhere.
"The water that runs off the Kinder Scout plateau runs through peat - it's this that makes lots of the ice look browny-yellow."

It was windy, very cold, with a light sleet pelleting my face. I took a few shots then got back to my vehicle! I suppose I could take away the lens flare, but for some reason I don't mind it.
shooting into the sun presented some obvious challenges, but having the sun behind this beautiful bird also allowed the sun to outline his ears and some feathers with light.

Rode from Chicago to Daytona Florida for bike week. End of February. "0" Degrees in Indiana.
Electric vest, long underwear, Snowmobile suit, By the time I got to Kentucky, I had to start taking off riding gear.
This new arctic suit was bought second hand online and looks 'never worn'. It is labelled Canadian Arctic Program!
We don't have any use for it really, other than making silly photos when we think it is 'cold'. It is cozy warm inside this suit!
The suit is quite heavy and cumbersome. It doesn't need hanging; it is so thick that it stands on its own! :)

Sydney today, 24 June 2024
Min. 6°C, Max. 16°C
Overall, for some Aussies, myself included, <20°C feels 'cold'.
Looking forward to longer days and warmer weather.
And, in summer, we'll all be complaining about the heat and wish for a cooler weather.
There's a great Aussie poem about changing weather.
Said Hanrahan by John O'Brien
“We’ll all be rooned, said Hanrahan,
In accents most forlorn,
Outside the church, ere Mass began,
One frosty Sunday morn.
The congregation stood about,
Coat-collars to the ears,
And talked of stock, and crops, and drought,
As it had done for years.
“It’s looking crook,” said Daniel Croke;
“Bedad, it’s cruke, me lad,
For never since the banks went broke
Has seasons been so bad.”
“It’s dry, all right,” said young O’Neil,
With which astute remark
He squatted down upon his heel
And chewed a piece of bark.
And so around the chorus ran
“It’s keepin’ dry, no doubt.”
“We’ll all be rooned,” said Hanrahan,
“Before the year is out.”
“The crops are done; ye’ll have your work
To save one bag of grain;
From here way out to Back-o’-Bourke
They’re singin’ out for rain.
“They’re singin’ out for rain,” he said,
“And all the tanks are dry.”
The congregation scratched its head,
And gazed around the sky.
“There won’t be grass, in any case,
Enough to feed an ass;
There’s not a blade on Casey’s place
As I came down to Mass.”
“If rain don’t come this month,” said Dan,
And cleared his throat to speak —
“We’ll all be rooned,” said Hanrahan,
“If rain don’t come this week.”
A heavy silence seemed to steal
On all at this remark;
And each man squatted on his heel,
And chewed a piece of bark.
“We want an inch of rain, we do,”
O’Neil observed at last;
But Croke “maintained” we wanted two
To put the danger past.
“If we don’t get three inches, man,
Or four to break this drought,
We’ll all be rooned,” said Hanrahan,
“Before the year is out.”
In God’s good time down came the rain;
And all the afternoon
On iron roof and window-pane
It drummed a homely tune.
And through the night it pattered still,
And lightsome, gladsome elves
On dripping spout and window-sill
Kept talking to themselves.
It pelted, pelted all day long,
A-singing at its work,
Till every heart took up the song
Way out to Back-o’-Bourke.
And every creek a banker ran,
And dams filled overtop;
“We’ll all be rooned,” said Hanrahan,
“If this rain doesn’t stop.”
And stop it did, in God’s good time;
And spring came in to fold
A mantle o’er the hills sublime
Of green and pink and gold.
And days went by on dancing feet,
With harvest-hopes immense,
And laughing eyes beheld the wheat
Nid-nodding o’er the fence.
And, oh, the smiles on every face,
As happy lad and lass
Through grass knee-deep on Casey’s place
Went riding down to Mass.
While round the church in clothes genteel
Discoursed the men of mark,
And each man squatted on his heel,
And chewed his piece of bark.
“There’ll be bush-fires for sure, me man,
There will, without a doubt;
We’ll all be rooned,” said Hanrahan,
“Before the year is out.”
Ahem >>> climate change ...
rooned = Irish, ruined
Bedad = Irish, expression of surprise
Back ‘o’ Bourke = Aussie slang/informal, remote, inaccessible and a bit backward, place.
(Bourke is a historic country town in New South Wales, population about 2,400. With much better infrastructure and transport it is not that remote anymore and certainly not ‘backward’. From Sydney about 760km, 8 – 9 hours by car).

Freaking bad weather, it snowed all day but still got a nice sunset picture even though it was still snowing at that time......
P.S. I am very happy that I am again posting to flickr very regularly after a long long time :)
Had trouble sleeping, last night. Not uncommon. Since I knew it was supposed to be chilly, I took a look at my indoor/outdoor thermometer. Yup, chilly during the night, here in Columbia County, New York, USA--January 4, 2014 at 3:55 A.M. That's minus 8 F. Fairly unusual for this area. Thankfully, the forecast for the next few days is higher. It's a bit erratic, though--24, 37, 49, 8, 21, 20, 30--for the next week. Hard to know what season it is, anymore! Here are a couple of interesting links that give some explanation--cold weather being displaced as the Arctic warms:

This is the East Beach at Lossiemouth in Scotland. It was taken in the late afternoon of Midwinter's Day. This is actually the river side of the beach, and the area in the bottom right hand side is covered with ice from when the tide was in and the river level is high. When the tide went out, the sheet of ice that had formed, settled onto the sand. The white by the sand dunes is not white sand, but frost.
