Winter days in Minneapolis...it's about staying warm, Comrade!

12/28/12 – Cold Winter

And it's sure been a cold, cold winter

And the wind ain't been blowin' from the south

For some of us, winter is a time that we may avoid. We may just sit inside by a warm fire, dreaming of a hot summer. Not these two gals. Robyn and her daughter, Hailey, took advantage of the shining sun on this cold, cold winter day. And to my surprise, Hailey lost her first tooth right before the photo session. We had fun, spite the cold and goofed around quite a bit. Can you guess which one of them was on the naughty list?

It sure been a hard, hard winter

My feet been draggin' 'cross the ground

And I hope it's gonna be a long, hot summer

And the light of love will be burnin' bright

On the 2nd of January 2010 we had about -20 Celsius in Borgå.

We stopped at a campground along the Machias River today. It was a cold November day, and I spotted this person removing his canoe from the river. WEtsuits were hanging on the lean to where he and his friend intended to camp for the night. Temps should reach into the low 20's tonight....brrrrrrr!

My grandma knitted this a long time ago to block the cold drafts that come under the doors in the winter. I'm sure that there's an actual name for it...but I have no idea what that might be.

It will hit -16 tonight with strong winds. Everyone in Ashton is having trouble with pipes freezing.

Dont think our wooly friends are too keen on the recent cold snap!

Snow and ice greeted everyone New Year Morning in the TriCities going out to scrap their windshields Monday morning.

Especially for a diesel engine, cold weather can be devastating. The fuel MUST be treated with an additive to prevent "gelling." At temperatures at and below zero, the fuel will actually start to thicken, just as Jello does once you mix it up and put it in the fridge. Needless to say, gelled fuel doesn't travel through fuel filters too well.

Also, water contamination in the fuel (or by condensation in the tanks) can freeze and cause major problems. The picture shows our Kenworth's cut-open primary fuel filter (catches the big stuff), showing ice crystals on the right, which collect int he bottom of the filter (water is heavier than fuel).

It was -17 (before wind chill) when we got up this morning. Fortunately, someone cranked up the furnace and it climbed into the teens which was our sign to get out and walk! And yes, the white area around my mouth is frost :)
