Polly is not at all a dependent cat. During the warm summer months she dodges inside for a bite to eat at night, then spends the rest of the time hunting in the fields and sleeping in her favourite places away from the house but where there's warmth and shelter.
Touch of cold or wet, back she comes.
Been kind of chilly here lately. Mary Catherine (the flame point lady to the right) was asleep in her fav spot on the bed. Later I noticed Izzy next to her, not unusual since they are totally bonded. But I *was* surprised much later to see Dexter join the group. He's usually the rabble-rouser; like if he wanted to be in that spot he would chase the others off.

12/28/12 – Cold Winter
And it's sure been a cold, cold winter
And the wind ain't been blowin' from the south
For some of us, winter is a time that we may avoid. We may just sit inside by a warm fire, dreaming of a hot summer. Not these two gals. Robyn and her daughter, Hailey, took advantage of the shining sun on this cold, cold winter day. And to my surprise, Hailey lost her first tooth right before the photo session. We had fun, spite the cold and goofed around quite a bit. Can you guess which one of them was on the naughty list?
It sure been a hard, hard winter
My feet been draggin' 'cross the ground
And I hope it's gonna be a long, hot summer
And the light of love will be burnin' bright
I bet the hedgehog is glad he doesn't have to come out until spring! Not that he'd be able to get through the snow anyway!
A warm, squishy colorful afghan that's just now coming out of hiding for another season. Of course, the weather keeps bouncing back and forth, but at least I've got something to bundle up in when the time comes. A second-hand shop find from a few years back. Digital photo. Photoshop. (2008)
This is two hours after sunrise! Even now, it is only 8--and I have to go bring the animals hay and water!!
The Jackson River flows together with the Cowpasture at Iron Gate, VA to form the James. The Jackson flows through forest, farms, a reservoir, an urban area, and a paper mill before reaching its confluence with the Cowpasture.
As it passes through tracts of the George Washington National Forest, it offers striking beauty and unique recreation opportunities.

A five-man team from the Alaska Army National Guard’s 1-297th Reconnaissance and Surveillance Squadron participate in a cold weather subject-matter-expert exchange with the Mongolian Armed at the Five Hills Training Area near Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Feb. 22-26. The purpose of the exercise was to support the Alaska National Guard’s state partnership with Mongolia, giving MAF soldiers the opportunity to learn about cold weather and mountain tactics, techniques and procedures from AKARNG Soldiers. Headed out for a 10-miler before work this morning and it was 40 degrees. Brrrr. Time to break out the running pants and long-sleeved shirt.
Heavy snows caused major disruptions across Dartmoor in February 2009 with many hamlets and villages cut off from the outside world. Drifts up to 10 feet deep blocked the road between Holne and Hexworthy.
The first morning of our visit was pretty cold but that didn't stop my daughter from beachcombing in her jacket. She is part polar bear.
