Record low temperatures for this day -24ºc and if you figure in the wind chill -40ºc

The lake at Steele Creek Park in Bristol, Tennessee started to freeze New Years Eve with the evening temps in the teens. The low on Monday evening is supposed to be in single digits.

What little snow there was along Island Road in Bristol, Va. some creative residents collected enough to make a snowman. The cold temps will keep him happy and unmelted for a while.

Cold winter in northern Sweden. Peace and amazing nature.

Little did I know that by the next day this would feel warm...

A view of our deck through the kitchen window. What isn't immediately evident is the wind: wind chill is in the single digits.

Snow blows in across the lake as I take in a rare lunchtime visit to the park. With colder weather approaching today was the day to return to the park to test out some other gear to make sure the morning visit and a photo-a-day continues. Once the mornings get down below -10 c consistently only the right clothing and equipment will do, there's a difference going out daily you have to accept the weather as it is. These last few weeks of getting colder have taught me a few things, keeping warm, me and batteries, about how gloves should be made and how important keeping fingers warm is, keeping cameras and lenses dry, away from condensation, the value of zip-lok bags and how useful a tethered lens cap can be. Its an ongoing learning experience something I wouldn't trade for anything.

12/28/12 – Cold Winter

And it's sure been a cold, cold winter

And the wind ain't been blowin' from the south

For some of us, winter is a time that we may avoid. We may just sit inside by a warm fire, dreaming of a hot summer. Not these two gals. Robyn and her daughter, Hailey, took advantage of the shining sun on this cold, cold winter day. And to my surprise, Hailey lost her first tooth right before the photo session. We had fun, spite the cold and goofed around quite a bit. Can you guess which one of them was on the naughty list?

It sure been a hard, hard winter

My feet been draggin' 'cross the ground

And I hope it's gonna be a long, hot summer

And the light of love will be burnin' bright

On the 2nd of January 2010 we had about -20 Celsius in Borgå.

Colder weather is upon us, yes even in Los Angeles
