Swiss Gebirgs Infanteri cold weather hat

zero degree resin applied and all is well cured very well in the cold conditions

Britain is suffering freezing weather at the moment. It must be cold out there because Wirral, being a peninsula, usually has a very temperate climate.

When I collected the milk from the doorstep this morning it was frozen. One bottle so much that it had pushed the foil lid off.

This photo was taken 2 hours after the milk was left to defrost indoors.

(Yes I know I repost the same photo)

And the big thing I despise about cold weather is static shock. It happened to me the first time yesterday & it hurts like a mother fucker. So if you see me hesitating to shake your hand or wearing gloves to touch things. I'm scared of getting that jolt, it hurts like hell. So you're not going to see me wearing a Snuggie real soon

(Yes I also know I need to do some house cleaning real soon. LOL!!!)

I took this while in motion. The temperature was 20 degrees (fahrenheit).

the slippers come out again

I recently finished this very simple wrap/shawl. My Mum gave me a whole lot of this yarn ~ I don't know what she had in mind when she bought it but she never got round to using it! It's Stylecraft Milan yarn and the recommended needle size is 8mm. I decided to go with plain 'ole garter stitch, using 20mm needles :-) It grew so quickly ~ as you can no doubt imagine LOL

I really enjoyed knitting this using these big needles ~ I am thinking of making some scarves for Christmas presents :-)

Supporters came out to celebrate the grand opening of the DeWalt Heritage Center, top photos, and to view Dew family memorabilia, bottom photos.

The dreary rain and cold weather didn't prevent Missouri City residents and other supporters from "just Dewing it" and attending the grand opening of a historic landmark - the Dew House and DeWalt Heritage Center.

The January 9 event marked the Dew House's transition to the DeWalt Heritage Center. Several Dew family members were on-hand to witness the long-awaited event.

Precinct 2 County Commissioner Grady Prestage gave thanks to the family members who helped assure the home would be saved. "Fort Bend County pledges to be good stewards of the house," he said. "It is incumbent on all of us to participate in meaningful programs here and assure the continued development of this historic home."

The DeWalt Heritage Society, a partnership between Fort Bend County and the Fort Bend Museum Association, is leading efforts to preserve the Dew House, which was moved in 2007 to Kitty Hollow Park, 9555 Highway 6 South, where it has been renovated into the DeWalt Heritage Center.

"It is easy to tear things down, so we are fortunate that we have a City Council and County Commissioners that want to preserve history to make sure these types of things are still around," Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen said in a brief speech. He also encouraged residents of the area to support "this very important project" in east Fort Bend County. One option he presented was the purchase of one of the many paving stones at the entrance to the Dew House. Each costs $100 and is marked with the names of contributors and their family members.

Ongoing activities planned for the DeWalt Heritage Center include docent-guided tours of exhibits in the upstairs area, and the purchase of Fort Bend Museum Association memberships. Eventually, school groups will be able to tour the museum and learn first-hand about the historic artifacts within its walls, including sugar cane, a replica of a mercantile store complete with a cash register that can ring up to $1, antique furnishings and clothing, a Dew family tree, a hand-made stained-glass window that pays homage to the Dew family businesses and interests and portraits dating back to the turn of the century.

Diane Ware, the Fort Bend County Museum Association's special project historian, has been instrumental in the restoration project and thanked all donors who made the grand opening possible, noting that "Dew family members played an important part in the growth of the area."

Dew family members served as Missouri City's first justice of the peace, as a physician, as an original director of the Fort Bend County fair, as founders of the Fort Bend American Cancer Society and the Woman's Club of Missouri City, as well as committee directors and underwriters of what is now known as the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The future of the historic home is as bright as its past. In addition to tours, a February wedding is planned. The facility currently can be viewed by appointment only. Those wishing to schedule tours or events may contact the Fort Bend County Museum Association at 281-342-1256 or County Commissioner Grady Prestage's office at 281-403-8000. With the recruiting and training of docents, the Dew House anticipates maintaining regular hours this summer.

The home is located just off Highway 6, close to the Fort Bend Tollway, where the DeWalt, Dew and Palmer families once raised sugar cane and other crops. An heir of the Dew Family donated the house and Johnson Development Corporation donated the 7 1/2-acre site it rests within to Fort Bend County.

Late November afternoon looking out over the Vale of Aylesbury....as the light fades the arctic air flow ushers in some of the coldest weather the UK has experienced at this time of year recently.

It got cold while we were there.

Ron Abfalterson and Mark Wilkieson, famous cold weather explorers braving the chill of a northern day on the ice of Lake Michigan. A couple of fine, strapping, good looking nordic types for sure.

it got really cold

At the CDC we get outfitted with ECW gear before heading to Antarctica. Our team wear the "bunny boots" (lower right hand corner) in the field to protect our feet from getting cold and wet. The boots are REALLY BIG, and a bit hard to walk around in.

NWS screen cap (Dec17, 2013)

as you can see there are now resins & top coats that can be laid in cold weather going down to zero degree's

It was going to be 12 degrees Celsius that day.

I was going to take a picture every ten steps or so for the duration of my walk today, sleet on the camera lens and the logistics of taking a whole bunch of pictures in gloved hands just didn't cut it, so I stopped about sixty pictures in. It WOULD have been awesome if I'd done the whole walk, but I would have lost some fingers.

Headed out for a 10-miler before work this morning and it was 40 degrees. Brrrr. Time to break out the running pants and long-sleeved shirt.
