The lake at Steele Creek Park in Bristol, Tennessee started to freeze New Years Eve with the evening temps in the teens. The low on Monday evening is supposed to be in single digits.

I spotted this pair on the Rubbermaid storage shed I have right outside my door last night. The female is on the left and the male on the right; yes, she's supposed to be wingless. She was around 1 cm; he, 1.5 cm.
At one point I counted a total of 11 of these moths on this container, on the bricks under the patio lights, on my doorframe, on the glass. She was the only female.

Several are at this location most winters. This one did not pose long. Looking at Sibley's guide, TIL that the rufous on the shoulder is not usually visible on the fresh (winter) adult.
Woke up to the second snow of the season. Coldest day so far too. Glad I have a warm coat and mittens.
Originally without bunks, just animal stalls with cobbled floor, and water running down the middle. Shelter and especially handy for Lochnagar in winter but never cosy. The bunks were an improvement and deterred any raiding anarchists from occupying the royal lodge.
Lydia's House is a a ministry of the Richland County Ministerial Association to provide emergency cold weather shelter for homeless families. Different churches each week night from 6pm-8am. I took these photographs of few of the churches participating on Thursday, January 5, 2012 in Richland Center, Wisconsin.

On May 7, 2011, community members braved unusually cold weather for Hayward's second annual multigenerational poetry slam in the Hayward Public Library garden plaza. Following a series of free poetry slam workshops in March and April, led by Matt Blesse of the San Francisco-based Youth Speaks, many participants presented poems inspired by or about the Big Read selection In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. Lynn Roberts placed first in the poetry slam competition, followed by Judy Tomlinson in second place and Alison Diep, a 9th grade student from San Leandro, in third place.
