Made some wristies today. Thanks to SuperTramp and the Professor of Hammocks for the helpful advice!
We just experienced some of the coldest weather Southern New Mexico has to offer. Yesterday there was light snow and temps down into the single digits. With windchill we were well below zero. The interstate was closed in both directions leaving travelers stranded at the local hotels for a night. We started the day right by mixing up a gallon of store bought cider with mulling spice, nutmeg, cinnamon, lemon zest and maple syrup. I bring the pot to a near boil then fill a giant thermos which keeps the cider hot all day.

These gloves are soft leather with great padding. There are zippered pockets in the gauntlet section and they hold lobster claw rain covers. Worn a handful of times -- like new.

I used two patterns from DCR #5 to make this turtleneck and jumper ensemble. Completely handsewn with only needle and thread since my sewing machine is not available at the moment....thanks to ficelia for inspiring me with her cute handsewn clothes for lati! I may just use needle and thread from now on,especially for those temperamental knits.

On March 4th here in my neck of the woods we got "significant icing" which amounted to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch depending on the spot. This brought down limbs by the dozen and we were without power for 24+ hours. It was a long and cold night. I felt like I was in London during the war - transformers were blowing up all around our neighborhood all night as the limbs came down (of course our section was the only down for 24 hours, everyone else was an hour or two here and there). You'd see balls of light and hear the explosions which usually happened in a 3 or 4 burst sequence. Sometimes things burned so then you'd smell smoke... well it was a LONG night. However the ice was SO pretty I couldn't resist taking some pics in the morning when it finally was daylight.
Assignment 1. Excess. Nothing exceeds like excess, and this week we want to see what that means. Tag with cwd601.
Blaaah. Cold weather has started up again. I'm hoping it doesn't last... (We've got the tail end of America's hurricanes and things which, obviously, is nowhere near as bad as an actual hurricane but still adds up to lots of wind and rain.) D:
Jasper and I are not ready for Winter. (Although she did kind of enjoy getting into her jumper and snuggling up on my bed with her new panda toy. x3)

I finally got some proper protection for my face for very cold days. I rode with this today in single-digit temps and was perfectly comfortable. Except, of course, for the feeling that people might have been disturbed by the sight of me...

"When I close my eyes, I see you. No matter where I am. I can smell your perfume through these whispering pines. I'm with your ghost again. It's a shame about the weather. I know soon we'll be together And I can't wait til then. I want to see you again..."

Tie-dye one of these babies for Hippie Gimp action!
Where to find white blindfolds... I suppose a cloth sleep mask would work. Tie-dyed as well, of course.

The forecast was for 10 degrees overnight so I camped out in some local bushland to see how my gear would cope. It all worked really well and I have no doubts that it can handle below zero. I also listened to a few random podcasts I had downloaded ages ago and found a real gem. Make yourself a coffee and sit down and have a listen.
