The cooler fall weather inspired me to change up the classic caprese salad a little bit. I diced and sprinkled basil on heirloom tomatoes, brushed them with olive oil and then broiled them until they were nice and roasty. Then I put the mozzarella on and added a last topping of olive oil, sea salt and fresh pepper.

I feel like cold weather came on suddenly. I am not okay with how cold my house is and how there are no cuddles involved. I am also not okay with how painful my fingers were after my hilariously bad decision to ride my motorcycle home when it was 35F (2C). At least I have a fluffy warm bathrobe!

(This week wasn't a good one. I'm still getting over my migraine, too. I got really dizzy at work today.)

Mark Irwin worked for Convair as the Chief of the Film and Video Group from 1944 to 1977, during one of the most innovative and productive time periods of the company’s existence. His work covers Convair’s premier programs such as the Seadart, the R3Y Tradewind, the Atlas ballistic missile, the POGO and the Tomahawk cruise missile. In addition to routine filming projects, Irwin conducted a variety of unusual shoots such as cold weather (snow) environments at Squaw Valley and Bemidji MN, and in 1956 embarked on a 2 year assignment at Cape Canaveral, FL at the very beginning of the Atlas program.

12/28/12 – Cold Winter

And it's sure been a cold, cold winter

And the wind ain't been blowin' from the south

For some of us, winter is a time that we may avoid. We may just sit inside by a warm fire, dreaming of a hot summer. Not these two gals. Robyn and her daughter, Hailey, took advantage of the shining sun on this cold, cold winter day. And to my surprise, Hailey lost her first tooth right before the photo session. We had fun, spite the cold and goofed around quite a bit. Can you guess which one of them was on the naughty list?

It sure been a hard, hard winter

My feet been draggin' 'cross the ground

And I hope it's gonna be a long, hot summer

And the light of love will be burnin' bright

So up until this week, the weather in Chicago hasn't been too terrible. And after a couple snow-less weeks, I was happily walking around outdoors, varying between several of my gym shoes, depending on what color I was wearing that day. THEN, it started to snow. And the following morning, it was still snowing. And all over the newscasts were weather reports about a blizzard coming our way.

Luckily, Ricky's mom gave me some long underwear for Christmas, so I've been making it a habit to wear them under my pants when I go out. But the other night, the weather was absolutely brutal. Windchill of negative 17ish or so. I did not want to go out at all, I just wanted to stay inside, nice and toasty in my apartment and perhaps watch the new episode of The Office. But no, I had made plans and wanted to hang out with people so I went out in the brutal, negative degree weather. Several hours later, as I had decided to finally go home... the car wouldn't start! Luckily my friend had some jumper cables, but nobody really knew how to connect them so it took us about 10-15 minutes or so before we actually got the car started.

This is the start of our food supply. Year after year I've been told that I start it to early, I say you have to plant smart. I only plant cold weather plants first and the rest come after the normal last frost (March 15th here in east Texas). I guess that is because I come from New York and that I don't know how to grow a garden. I say that I come from a farm and "that farmers feed the world"..........

We are sooo blessed in this area to have cardinals as year round residents. The subtle beauty of the female is especially striking in the winter.
