The participants were introduced to the specialty unit “Mountain Cold Weather Company” through morning PT. MCW is one of the many specialty units Norwich has to offer for any rook or cadet willing to attempt and complete their indoctrination period, which starts in September and finishes in April. After completing the indoctrination period, also known as their “green stick” year, they are welcomed into the company. The company specializes in knot tying and mountaineering in all states of weather.

Amanhã vai fazer 5 graus, toda essa neve vai finalmente derreter.

There is a very active group of steam train enthusiasts with a " round house " in New Hope , Pa that runs steam engines on this line . You can go on train rides from the New Hope station . It's lots of fun and the people are great . Wycombe burst on the scene in the 1890's when the Northeast Pennsylvania Railroad opened a line through the county.

The villagers originally wanted their town called Lingohocken which was the area's Indian name, but postal authorities felt it would be confused with the town of Wingohocken, another post office in Pennsylvania. The name Wycombe was then adopted. It is an excellent example of a late 19th century Victorian Village and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They did name thier volunteer fire department Lingohocken so the name was saved just not the way they wanted .

WEST YELLOWSTONE, MT -- Snow surveyors with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and other cooperating agencies learn snow sampling techniques, cold weather survival, avalanche and snow mobile skills during USDA's annual Westwide Snow Survey Training, March 11-16, 2018.

The course is offered to snow surveyors who collect snowpack data at hundreds of sites across 12 Western states, including Alaska. As part of its Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting program, NRCS operates and maintains an extensive network of automated snow telemetry (SNOTEL) sites and manual snow courses throughout the West. The data collected at those sites are used by the NRCS National Water and Climate Center (NWCC) to generate a variety of forecasting products—including detailed streamflow forecasts for the spring and summer.

Because the vast majority of the water supply in the West comes from snowmelt, these forecasts are critical in helping agricultural producers and communities plan ahead and make informed decisions related to their spring and summer water supply. While the forecasts are primarily produced for agricultural use to help farmers, ranchers and irrigators plan their water use, a variety of other stakeholders rely on these forecasts for operating hydropower generation, reservoir management, fish habitats, and outdoor recreation.

December 2010 started with some extreme cold weather in eastern Norway. This photo was taken at Lørenskog, outside Oslo, on December 1st and shows a thermometer displaying -19 C (-2 F).

My Pennsylvania-born girlfriend cooked a pot of cabbage with ham and green beans. It is her special winter dish that I've enjoyed for several years and is easy to make. It was much too cold for cooking on her gas grill outside.

Cold, cold weather brings these sweet tiny birds out in flocks to my feeders. Not only are they a delight to watch, but they are very verbal with a variety of chirps and whistles ringing through the trees as they sit and wait their turn to grab a seed and then fly away to a nearby branch to crack open & eat the seed. Believe it or not, they are only 1" or so bigger than Hummingbirds. They look much bigger with their puffy feathers in the winter.

This was a bit of serendipity. I had eyed this sweater back when they were sold in American Eagle Outfitter stores, but I'm a bargain hunter and so I wasn't willing to pay full price for it. This past weekend while quickly going through the racks at Goodwill in search of cardigans, I found the exact sweater I had wanted all those many months ago--in pink (I LOVE pink) and my size and perfect condition for $3.

Pink sweater - American Eagle (Goodwill)

Brown and white button shirt - JCPenney

Jeans - American Eagle

Bronze flats - JCPenney

Silver and gold chain necklace - Belk

Handbag - Guess (Ross)

Cold weather really gets Caney fired up, so when it actually SNOWED in Georgia a couple weeks ago (a whopping 2 inches, woohoo :)) she went bonkers. The boxer burns were out of control, I tell you!! And the crazed expression you see here, well she was like that pretty much the ENTIRE weekend. Thank God we have a doggy door!!!

Here Caney is trying to steal my fleece pullover... while I'm still wearing it. Crazy dog. :))

The Inglewood and Glendale based troops from the California Army National Guard's 1-160th Infantry, HHC and B Co. units, gear up for their assault on their Operation Red Snow objective Feb. 15, 2012. The troops acclimated over six days planning, adjusting, testing and learning before getting the final word to suit up at 8 p.m. They would be transported into the wilderness and dropped off in a starry night with temps dipping into the teens. Teams would ascend 1000 feet over snow fields, crossing streams, climbing ravines, all while staying perfectly quiet and using no light except the moon and their night vision devices. They would converge on the terrorist camp at 2 a.m. with frozen water bladders and eager for action. Here, Spc. Michael Olas, makes his final adjustments. (Army National Guard photo/Master Sgt. Paul Wade)
