What is it about the cold weather that makes me turn on the oven? Today we've made cookies, cake, soup and it's almost time to make dinner.
This is for everyone who has experienced the cold weather settling in. :) Hope your winter isn't too long and cold.

The Cold Weather & Your Eyes
Protecting your eyes is important during all seasons of the year, however preserving the health of the eyes during the winter requires special measures, especially if you usually carry out outdoor activities. Fortunately, taking care of the eyes in a cooler climate does not have to be complicated. If you or a loved one is looking for the best lasik eye surgery Michigan provider, look no further than the Yaldo Eye Center.
Dry air
Dryness and eye irritation are the most common eye discomforts during the winter. Because winter air is drier, the moisture in your eyes evaporates more quickly than in the humid summer air. When the heating is on, moisture is also decreased, which can cause eye irritation. Dry air reduces the production of tears, causing the eyes can not stay moist.
Tips for keeping your eyes moist and hydrated in cold climates include:
* Drink water: An abundant consumption of water keeps your whole body hydrated, including the eyes. To make sure you are drinking enough water, take a reusable water bottle with you and refill it four to six times a day.
* Use eye drops: The use of artificial tears helps to keep your eyes lubricated and moist. Most eye drops are available without a prescription, but prescription strength drops are also available if necessary. Your ophthalmologist will recommend the eye drops that best suit your needs.
* Use a humidifier: Dry heat causes moisture in your eyes to decrease. A humidifier allows you to keep the humidity in the air when you have the heat on.
* Care for contacts: Keep your contact lenses clean and hydrated to avoid irritation and dry eye syndrome. Do not sleep in your contacts.
* Flashes more: When you are concentrating on a complex visual task, such as using a computer, it may not blink frequently enough. This can exacerbate the dryness of winter. If your eyes feel dry, try blinking more often to relieve irritation.
* Warm your feet: When heating your vehicle, direct the heat towards your feet to prevent hot air from entering your eyes. If you have seat heaters, use them to help reach a comfortable temperature instead of turning on the heater.
Protection for the eyes
Many people find it unnecessary to wear sunglasses during the winter, however, glasses are as important in winter as in summer. Extreme cold is usually not the problem since our eyes have built-in defenses against the cold, which include tearing and squinting. Finding the best lasik eye surgery Michigan provider can be tricky, here at the Yaldo Eye Center, we make that much easier. Eye injuries caused by exposure to cold usually occur in people who try to open their eyes during outdoor activities in the snow, such as snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding, and shoveling. If you are looking for the best Detroit lasik eye surgery clinic, look no further.
Protective goggles protect your eyes from the glare of the sun and the dry air of the wind. Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can damage the retina of the eye and cause cataracts, and macular degeneration. The American Optometric Association recommends using sunglasses throughout the year with UV protection that blocks UVA and UVB rays and has the UV400 label or 100% UV protection. It is recommended that when skiing use glasses that have polycarbonate lenses, which block UV radiation. The ocular protection against ultraviolet rays should be used by all members of the family, mainly children. If you or a loved one is searching for Michigan eye surgery, trust your eyes with the Yaldo Eye Center.
If you do not wear sunglasses or goggles, avoid outdoor exposure on sunny or cloudy days when the sky is very bright. The sun’s rays reflected in the snow can cause lesions in the cornea called photokeratitis. The eyelids may become red, swollen and sore. The eyes may feel irritated and sensitive to light. The treatment includes heating the eyes and applying artificial tears to moisten and protect the eyes.
People with glaucoma may experience changes in intraocular pressure when exposed to extremely high or very low temperatures. This situation can complicate the treatment and evolution of this disease, in this situation consult your ophthalmologist. Speak with a leading Michigan laser eye surgery specialist at the Yaldo Eye Center.
Inform your doctor about the effects of cold weather on your eyes. Some ophthalmologists can change their medications or prescribe eye drops to help ensure that their eyes are healthy during the winter months. Here at the Yaldo Eye Center, we pride ourselves as the leading Michigan laser eye surgery providers.

Cold weather and a few inches of snow did not prevent me and fellow Flickr member Melissa from exploring the shores of various lakes in the Lake Region of NH on this sunny Saturday. This shot is taken just north of Weirs Beach in Laconia, and is looking north along the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee and the old B&M railroad tracks. Even though this was a cold January day, a mild winter has left the lake ice free thus far. Snowmobilers would normally be using the old train tracks, but there has not been enough snow yet this winter for them to do so!

#Gaza: Four #lion #cubs die from cold weather day after birth.
Four lion cubs died from the cold in a Gaza #zoo after wind ripped protective plastic sheeting from their cage during a winter storm, the zoo's owner has said.
Two cubs were found dead on Thursday, just a day after they were born, said Fathy Joma. The two others were barely breathing and efforts to revive them with an electric heater and blankets failed.
Several children gathered on Friday to watch as the cubs were buried.
Joma said the 12-year Israeli-Egyptian blockade on the Gaza Strip has made it difficult to obtain the food and equipment necessary for the care of animals, Palestinian media agency Maan reported. "We could not secure the necessary food supplements, medicines and antibiotics to save the lives of the cubs," Joma said. "We do not have enough money and the blockade is exacerbating the situation." I "These are African lions, they are not used to living in such cold weather and they really need special protection," he added.
The other animals in the private zoo in the southern Gaza Strip survived the storm, including the lioness, her mate and their three 14-month-old cubs, he said.
Most of the animals in the zoo were smuggled into Gaza from Egypt via underground tunnels a few years ago, before the Egyptian military destroyed the tunnels running beneath the border.
The wintry weather sweeping the region has made it especially hard for animals that lack proper care.
International animal care groups have carried out several evacuation missions in recent years to relocate animals and birds in poor condition to sanctuaries outside Gaza.

We awoke to a still day that somehow just looked cold. There is a sort of paleness in the light as the weather gets colder. I checked the thermometer, minus 23°C. That’s cold, not spectacularly cold but pretty chilly.
(Blippers 300 km north of here, and in Finland, have reported temperatures under -30° C - that really is cold!)
We dressed in layers, with one more layer than yesterday, and went off for our walk. The air is very dry, and with no wind and the sun shining it felt fine, though we took it easy going up the hill because breathing deeply didn’t feel too good.
The new snow makes the world very beautiful and there is more on the way!
My Pennsylvania-born girlfriend cooked a pot of cabbage with ham and green beans. It is her special winter dish that I've enjoyed for several years and is easy to make. It was much too cold for cooking on her gas grill outside.
Located along the shores of Hudson Bay, Churchill serves as a central gathering point for both Humans and Polar Bears alike.
These photos were taken during a three day polar bear/cold weather safari with Frontiers North. During the trip we spent our days watching the polar bears in their natural habitat from one of the company's signature Tundra Buggies. During the evenings we docked and relaxed at the mobile Tundra Buggy Lodge as the Polar Bears came up to the lodge to say hello, trying to figure out how to gain access to the raised vehicles.
I've wanted to see and spend time with wild polar bears for years. They are every bit as captivating up close and in the wild as I had dreamed. The entire trip felt like we had somehow been transported inside a National Geographic special or the taping of Planet Earth.
These are wonderful animals that need your help and protection.

Further snowfall overnight. The accumulated depth is easily 8-10". This is view westwards where the prevailing wind comes from. The fence is wire and usually transparent but has been transformed into a wall of snow.
The local weather / travel website reports that the main roads are reasonable due to the usual efficient work from the ploughs and gritters. I shall shortly dig out the car and head to the post office.
