WEST YELLOWSTONE, MT -- Snow surveyors with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and other cooperating agencies learn snow sampling techniques, cold weather survival, avalanche and snow mobile skills during USDA's annual Westwide Snow Survey Training, March 11-16, 2018.
The course is offered to snow surveyors who collect snowpack data at hundreds of sites across 12 Western states, including Alaska. As part of its Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting program, NRCS operates and maintains an extensive network of automated snow telemetry (SNOTEL) sites and manual snow courses throughout the West. The data collected at those sites are used by the NRCS National Water and Climate Center (NWCC) to generate a variety of forecasting products—including detailed streamflow forecasts for the spring and summer.
Because the vast majority of the water supply in the West comes from snowmelt, these forecasts are critical in helping agricultural producers and communities plan ahead and make informed decisions related to their spring and summer water supply. While the forecasts are primarily produced for agricultural use to help farmers, ranchers and irrigators plan their water use, a variety of other stakeholders rely on these forecasts for operating hydropower generation, reservoir management, fish habitats, and outdoor recreation.

The participants were introduced to the specialty unit “Mountain Cold Weather Company” through morning PT. MCW is one of the many specialty units Norwich has to offer for any rook or cadet willing to attempt and complete their indoctrination period, which starts in September and finishes in April. After completing the indoctrination period, also known as their “green stick” year, they are welcomed into the company. The company specializes in knot tying and mountaineering in all states of weather.

Edmond, Okla., native Lance Cpl. Nathan Aschenbrenner, an automatic rifleman with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, patrols across a field during the first week of Operation Double Check, a battalion-level offensive to rid Khwajadad and other areas in southern Musa Qalâeh district of insurgents. Aschenbrenner, 24, and other Fox Marines spent almost a week away from their company position at nearby Patrol Base 7171 during the operation’s initial phase. The Marines had to combat cold weather, inadequate shelter, fatigue and hunger, in addition to insurgents, during the first week of the operation. Aschenbrenner credits the Marines in his squad for helping him get through the experience. "Just having the guys around you, that really is how you take your mind off of everything,†said Aschenbrenner, a 2005 graduate of Edmond North High School. “Just talking to your buddy, joking around, having a good time in a bad situation totally makes it worth it.â€

This was a bit of serendipity. I had eyed this sweater back when they were sold in American Eagle Outfitter stores, but I'm a bargain hunter and so I wasn't willing to pay full price for it. This past weekend while quickly going through the racks at Goodwill in search of cardigans, I found the exact sweater I had wanted all those many months ago--in pink (I LOVE pink) and my size and perfect condition for $3.
Pink sweater - American Eagle (Goodwill)
Brown and white button shirt - JCPenney
Jeans - American Eagle
Bronze flats - JCPenney
Silver and gold chain necklace - Belk
Handbag - Guess (Ross)
