Gavin was experimenting with his water cup this morning, trickling water on himself. Shortly, he complained that he was cold. I explained to the young lad the pros and cons of various textiles and their preferred applications in modern apparel. I then gave him a quick quiz on video, in case there are any other toddlers (or adults) out there in need of a little cold weather apparel training. Oh, and the bit at the end - I told him I'd give him some chocolate milk if he helped me make a video. Gavin knew to demand payment immediately upon completion.

WEST YELLOWSTONE, MT -- Snow surveyors with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and other cooperating agencies learn snow sampling techniques, cold weather survival, avalanche and snow mobile skills during USDA's annual Westwide Snow Survey Training, March 11-16, 2018.
The course is offered to snow surveyors who collect snowpack data at hundreds of sites across 12 Western states, including Alaska. As part of its Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting program, NRCS operates and maintains an extensive network of automated snow telemetry (SNOTEL) sites and manual snow courses throughout the West. The data collected at those sites are used by the NRCS National Water and Climate Center (NWCC) to generate a variety of forecasting products—including detailed streamflow forecasts for the spring and summer.
Because the vast majority of the water supply in the West comes from snowmelt, these forecasts are critical in helping agricultural producers and communities plan ahead and make informed decisions related to their spring and summer water supply. While the forecasts are primarily produced for agricultural use to help farmers, ranchers and irrigators plan their water use, a variety of other stakeholders rely on these forecasts for operating hydropower generation, reservoir management, fish habitats, and outdoor recreation.

The Cold Weather & Your Eyes
Protecting your eyes is important during all seasons of the year, however preserving the health of the eyes during the winter requires special measures, especially if you usually carry out outdoor activities. Fortunately, taking care of the eyes in a cooler climate does not have to be complicated. If you or a loved one is looking for the best lasik eye surgery Michigan provider, look no further than the Yaldo Eye Center.
Dry air
Dryness and eye irritation are the most common eye discomforts during the winter. Because winter air is drier, the moisture in your eyes evaporates more quickly than in the humid summer air. When the heating is on, moisture is also decreased, which can cause eye irritation. Dry air reduces the production of tears, causing the eyes can not stay moist.
Tips for keeping your eyes moist and hydrated in cold climates include:
* Drink water: An abundant consumption of water keeps your whole body hydrated, including the eyes. To make sure you are drinking enough water, take a reusable water bottle with you and refill it four to six times a day.
* Use eye drops: The use of artificial tears helps to keep your eyes lubricated and moist. Most eye drops are available without a prescription, but prescription strength drops are also available if necessary. Your ophthalmologist will recommend the eye drops that best suit your needs.
* Use a humidifier: Dry heat causes moisture in your eyes to decrease. A humidifier allows you to keep the humidity in the air when you have the heat on.
* Care for contacts: Keep your contact lenses clean and hydrated to avoid irritation and dry eye syndrome. Do not sleep in your contacts.
* Flashes more: When you are concentrating on a complex visual task, such as using a computer, it may not blink frequently enough. This can exacerbate the dryness of winter. If your eyes feel dry, try blinking more often to relieve irritation.
* Warm your feet: When heating your vehicle, direct the heat towards your feet to prevent hot air from entering your eyes. If you have seat heaters, use them to help reach a comfortable temperature instead of turning on the heater.
Protection for the eyes
Many people find it unnecessary to wear sunglasses during the winter, however, glasses are as important in winter as in summer. Extreme cold is usually not the problem since our eyes have built-in defenses against the cold, which include tearing and squinting. Finding the best lasik eye surgery Michigan provider can be tricky, here at the Yaldo Eye Center, we make that much easier. Eye injuries caused by exposure to cold usually occur in people who try to open their eyes during outdoor activities in the snow, such as snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding, and shoveling. If you are looking for the best Detroit lasik eye surgery clinic, look no further.
Protective goggles protect your eyes from the glare of the sun and the dry air of the wind. Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can damage the retina of the eye and cause cataracts, and macular degeneration. The American Optometric Association recommends using sunglasses throughout the year with UV protection that blocks UVA and UVB rays and has the UV400 label or 100% UV protection. It is recommended that when skiing use glasses that have polycarbonate lenses, which block UV radiation. The ocular protection against ultraviolet rays should be used by all members of the family, mainly children. If you or a loved one is searching for Michigan eye surgery, trust your eyes with the Yaldo Eye Center.
If you do not wear sunglasses or goggles, avoid outdoor exposure on sunny or cloudy days when the sky is very bright. The sun’s rays reflected in the snow can cause lesions in the cornea called photokeratitis. The eyelids may become red, swollen and sore. The eyes may feel irritated and sensitive to light. The treatment includes heating the eyes and applying artificial tears to moisten and protect the eyes.
People with glaucoma may experience changes in intraocular pressure when exposed to extremely high or very low temperatures. This situation can complicate the treatment and evolution of this disease, in this situation consult your ophthalmologist. Speak with a leading Michigan laser eye surgery specialist at the Yaldo Eye Center.
Inform your doctor about the effects of cold weather on your eyes. Some ophthalmologists can change their medications or prescribe eye drops to help ensure that their eyes are healthy during the winter months. Here at the Yaldo Eye Center, we pride ourselves as the leading Michigan laser eye surgery providers.

In addition to the Super Pumper and Super Tender, the plan called for the Super Pumper to be supported by three "Satellite" units, which were basically a smaller hose tender, with 2000' of super high pressure 4 1/2" diameter hose, and a roof mounted 4000 g.p.m. water cannon. The three Satellites were refurbished in 1980.
In circa 1982, the three Satellite support plan was revised, and expanded to include a total of six Satellite units. But alas, the Super Pumper System was retired shortly after. The Satellites were re-equipped with conventional hose and responded to to major fires in a support capacity, until they too were retired..
The Super Pumper was designed in the day of pumper (known as engines in FDNY parlance) capacities of mediocre capacity, e.g. 1000 gpm.
As with any large city port, the prevalence of massive warehouses and piers made for spectacular fires. `Unfortunately, the smaller pumpers were not up to the task.
So, the Super Pumper was designed to take advantage of the waterfront supply of water, and / or the high pressure hydrant system in most of the industrial areas of New York City.
It should be noted that the water monitor (water cannon) as installed on the Super Tender had a removable reducing nozzle to increase pressure and water throw (stream) or could be used without (deluge).
While I've never witnessed it personally, it has been reported that the 7" water cannon / monitor on the Super Tender tractor was capable of blasting holes in the brick walls of warehouses. It's been said that in one instance in which the Super Pumper System responded to, that the water cannon punched a hole in the wall of the warehouse, ripped a significantly sized piece of machinery that had been bolted to the concrete floor, and pushed it clear across the warehouse floor to the other side.
Why it went out of service:
According to various sources, there were two reasons the Super Pumper System was retired.
The publicized and commonly accepted reason was that the cost of maintaining the system which was so infrequently used, was cost prohibitive.
The second reason which was told to us by one of the engineers, was more technical and consisted of two factors:
1) When constructed, the Napier Deltic diesel engine that powered the pump was mounted on the trailer. However, the air compressor and air reservoir for starting that diesel was mounted on the Mack tractor.
2) That model Mack tractor (that pulled the pump trailer, was prone to be out of service for repair frequently.
Even though the tractor of the Super Tender was of identical model, it was not equipped with an air compressor and therefore could not be used to start the Napier Deltic diesel engine.
Even so, with only one tractor in service (hypothetically if the other was out of service for repair) and had both unit been equipped with air compressors, only one piece of equipment could be pulled at one time. This would have required a third "spare" tractor, and this was not accounted for in the final plan.
Whether this reason can be confirmed through official channels at this time remains to be seen.

#Gaza: Four #lion #cubs die from cold weather day after birth.
Four lion cubs died from the cold in a Gaza #zoo after wind ripped protective plastic sheeting from their cage during a winter storm, the zoo's owner has said.
Two cubs were found dead on Thursday, just a day after they were born, said Fathy Joma. The two others were barely breathing and efforts to revive them with an electric heater and blankets failed.
Several children gathered on Friday to watch as the cubs were buried.
Joma said the 12-year Israeli-Egyptian blockade on the Gaza Strip has made it difficult to obtain the food and equipment necessary for the care of animals, Palestinian media agency Maan reported. "We could not secure the necessary food supplements, medicines and antibiotics to save the lives of the cubs," Joma said. "We do not have enough money and the blockade is exacerbating the situation." I "These are African lions, they are not used to living in such cold weather and they really need special protection," he added.
The other animals in the private zoo in the southern Gaza Strip survived the storm, including the lioness, her mate and their three 14-month-old cubs, he said.
Most of the animals in the zoo were smuggled into Gaza from Egypt via underground tunnels a few years ago, before the Egyptian military destroyed the tunnels running beneath the border.
The wintry weather sweeping the region has made it especially hard for animals that lack proper care.
International animal care groups have carried out several evacuation missions in recent years to relocate animals and birds in poor condition to sanctuaries outside Gaza.

On May 7, 2011, community members braved unusually cold weather for Hayward's second annual multigenerational poetry slam in the Hayward Public Library garden plaza. Following a series of free poetry slam workshops in March and April, led by Matt Blesse of the San Francisco-based Youth Speaks, many participants presented poems inspired by or about the Big Read selection In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. Lynn Roberts placed first in the poetry slam competition, followed by Judy Tomlinson in second place and Alison Diep, a 9th grade student from San Leandro, in third place.
I started writing poetry about 8 years ago. Once I got started, I couldn’t stop! I carry a notebook with me everywhere I go. I like to write about people who are confronting difficult issues. I enjoyed reading my poems at last year's Poetry Slam, and this year's event. I hope the Poetry Slams help to put Hayward on the map! I have also enjoyed meeting and talking with other writers and poets at the writers' group. - Troy Henderson
LOVE: A Poem by Troy Henderson
I have something to tell you
You can decide if it's true
It's about a love that will overpower you
Through the constant struggles that bind you
I found that this love will carry you
When you're lost and confused
It's amazing to me that this love will find you
Now I don't know about you
But here is a love that doesn't get its just due
I'm talking about a love that will cover you
In your darkest days
A love that says
It's okay
You made a mistake
I'm here to protect you
They tell me that love conquers all
I was one that didn't believe
Then love came to me
In the form of this lady
Now I want you to see
Close your eyes with me
I'll paint this masterpiece
You'll see
No money
Bills I have to pay
On the verge of being on the streets
No food to eat
There's a knock on the door
Who could that be - the landlord?
No...
Love came to see
This lady of whom I speak
She happens to be an intricate part of me
She's my mother
A gift
A sacrifice
A beautiful lady in her own right
The gift of love is an overwhelming appetite
It consumes you
For all the many nights she stayed awake
I have to say
I love my mom today
Dedicated to my mom
