British Rail Class 745 25kV 12 car EMU (Electric Multiple Unit)

745001 working the 1P24 11:30 (12:00 3E) Greater Anglia London Liverpool Street- Norwich service train at about 100 miles per hour northbound at Hatfield Peverel Station on the Great Eastern Main Line in the County of Essex (UK).

The Class 745 EMU's were a direct replacement in early 2020 for the ageing 30 year old plus Class 90 electric locomotives and their slam door British Rail Mk3b coaches which previously worked the Norwich- London Liverpool Street express services..

745001 was built by Stadler Rail at their facility in Bussnang Switzerland as one of the Stadler 'FLIRT' (Fast Light Intercity and Regional Train) modular family of trainsets.

Note the Dellner type coupling system in the big ugly hole at the front of the trains. The Dellner coupling is a version of the Scharfenberg coupler which connects pneumatics and electronics at the same point of contact.

Greater Anglia had an option to have a cover fitted in these coupling holes by Stadler but declined for cost and ease of maintenance reasons.

The train was hauled back to London and terminated at Clapham Junction at 2am, some 4 hours late.

33202 entered service in February 1962 as D6587 and withdrawn from the mainline in early 2009 and now resides in preservation at Mangapps Railway Museum near Burnham on Crouch in Essex.

I remember taking this photo and thinking to myself "why am I taking a photo of a boring Class 86".

Well, I had family on the train which just happened to be the 13.50 from Euston to Manchester via Stoke on Sunday 2nd December, 1984.

I suppose it's over thirty years ago now, and I do like the drivers casual action with a cup of tea in his hand as he approaches the cab of 86246 (ex E3149) for a job he's probably done endless times. I do remember the fact that the train was made up of all Mk1 stock....it also states this on the back of my photo !

If I see a Class 86 now, I stand back and look in admiration as some are still earning their keep, even though they are over fifty years old.

The Class of 2014 climbed the risers on the Plain on Thursday, April 10, 2014 for their class photo. Always a fun event to capture. The Class photo will be available from PanFoto in the very near future.

This weekend I teached a class here in Hamburg. Was a real fun weekend and I think the results are really good

This past Monday was Savanah's last ballet class for the season. Being that there were only two kids in the class, they didn't have a recital. In lieu of a recital the teacher invited the parents and in our case the grandparents to come and sit in on the last class so we could all see what they had been working on all these months.

With only two in the class they learned a lot more than they would have in a larger class and I was rather impressed with just how much both kids had learned. It is obvious how hard they worked. Having worked so hard in each class they were also given some play time too which was as much fun to watch as the structured class.

I know I don't have to say it again, as I say it all the time, I was really proud of her.
