The Chain Bridge was shut down for the Budapest Fair (celebrating the withdrawl of Soviet soldiers in 1991) the weekend we were there.
These innocent chains became casualties of a battle between 635 horsepower and 16 tires versus a tile plow sunk in several tons of mud. You can see that the chains have already been repaired from past wounds. I as the medic, figured that a new draft would be more practical, and so now we have new recruits. Their battle days will come.
The Golden Horn is the name given to a prominent horn-shaped estuary that joins the Bosphorus Strait. The Byzantine Empire had its naval headquarters there, and at the entrance to the Horn, a large chain was pulled across from Constantinople to the old Tower of Galata to prevent unwanted ships from entering the estuary and attacking the city.
This is presumably the last one used and is now in the military museum, Istanbul.
This is the chain that my grandfather has used for many years. Its been used for so many different things it also brings back many memories.

Actually nothing to do with slavery, the way this chain came out made me think of he abolition 200 publicity that can be seen dotted around Bristol at the moment. Something to think about.
