It was a grievous strategic, political and moral error for Obama to have ignored this issue from the first days of his Presidency. Rather than uniting the country, his failure to provide a moral compass has diluted his authority and capacity to lead, further fragmenting the American people. These laws, treaties and behavioral norms have been progressively distilled and fought for over many generations, reflecting unspeakably painful lessons of history. To squander the fruits of tragedy and struggle is a sin against our ancestors and future generations.
It is past time, but thankfully not too late to establish a precedent of accountability NOT impunity for the crimes committed against humanity by the Bush regime and its underlings.
