Chain Drive
Chain drive is a way of transmitting mechanical power from one place to another. It is often used to convey power to the wheels of a vehicle, particularly bicycles and motorcycles. It is also used in a wide variety of machines besides vehicles. The oldest known application of a chain drive appears in the Polybolos, a repeating crossbow described by the Greek engineer Philon of Byzantium. Chain drive was the main feature which differentiated the safety bicycle introduced in 1885, with its two equal-sized wheels, from the direct-drive penny-farthing or "high wheeler" type of bicycle. The popularity of the chain-driven safety bicycle brought about the demise of the penny-farthing, and is still a basic feature of bicycle design today.
A photograph of the famous Chain bridge in Budapest Hungary. Based on the design of the Hammersmith Bridge in London, the Chain bridge links Buda and Pest across the Danube river. This picture was taken from the Buda side. The building to the left is a posh hotel (didn't stay there I'm afraid). The bridge in the distance is Elizabeth bridge.
These chains used to be part of the machinery for opening and closing the gates of the sea lock at Portishead in North Somerset. The lock allows access between the Severn Estuary and Portishead dock, once used for industrial purposes but now enjoying a new life as a thriving marina. The lock was completely rebuilt circa 2000* making the old equipment shown here redundant, but the old chains can still be seen, enclosed in a large metal cabinet on the quayside. Photograph made Sunday 27th June 2021.
The photo as shot was a bit under-exposed so I have compensated for that in post-processing. The many little white specks are probably due to mites of dust on the film, but I have not tried to remove them all as I feel that they do not detract from the overall effect. The twigs are 'as found', and not specially placed.

This thick rusty chain and old rusty gardening clippers marks the spot where the Big Yellow Truck can be found. Enter the thick Aussie bush here and go searching ;)

The sun came out yesterday, so my daughter and I headed off to the park. We had a lovely couple of hours in the sun, she loves playing on the wooden playground.
I came across this beautiful dog In Salt River Cape Town.He had the most stunning beautiful piercing ice blue eyes and looked straight through me.It was heart breaking to see him chained in a confined space and not the first time I've seen this sort of thing,and it always gets to me.
The Budapest Chain Bridge, leading over the Danube, is one of the most beautiful bridges in Budapest. Especially in the evening the bridge glows in a beautiful light.
You like mountain chains just as much as I do? Well, Zhejiang has an unlimited supply of those !
