I cannot help myself. My battles are fought out inside, with my own demons ; it is not in my nature to tilt against the savage, cold blooded fanatics who clamor for our destruction. I am not afraid of them either, I don’t know why I am so calm it is sometimes like I am standing on the parapets of the palace of history looking down over far distant lands. This bit of history we are experiencing right now is something I know I can stand up to. I know what is happening, and yet my head is clear.

But sometimes I feel as if a layer of ashes are being sprinkled over my heart, as if my face were withering and decaying before my very eyes, as if everything was falling apart in front of me and my heart was letting everything go. But these are moments ; then everything falls back into place, my head is clear again.

And I can once more bear and stand up to this

piece of history that is ours.

For once you have begun to walk with God, you need only to keep on walking with him and life becomes one long stroll.

-Etty Hillesum

Cannot see my destination,

Yet still I walk ahead,

Never go where you cannot see,

Is what they always said.

Still I walk forward,

In hopes that my fears will dim,

Silently I'm praying,

That ahead won't be grim.

Headed in the direction,

I enter the mist,

When all of this is over,

I pray I still exist.

I cannot ignore the RAW photos of my largest white dogwood. I love how the sun lights up this tree's flowers. The texture of each petal, especially in the photo without sun, reminds me of a waterfall.

You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you, and in that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you. Brian Tracy

I cannot control how this scene will affect you because images talk to us in infinitely many ways based on our previous life experiences. I apologize if it gives you nightmares, and I will be happy if it affects you in a positive way. This image is an abstraction of my own emotions imprinted upon me by Mono Lake sand tufas: the sense of bewilderment, awe, and curiosity. Tufas' delicate complexity created by eons in dark depths of the lake is now on display lit by colorful Sierra sunsets.

SHAPE OF MY HEART by STING

WHAT IS THE SHAPE OF MY HEART WITHOUT HIM

Addiction is a funny thing; it takes you by surprise

You think that you're just having fun;

not aware you're telling lies

He gambled away all that he had,

didn't realise until it was gone

now he shuffles through the darkness;

eyes cast down to hide his shame

He doesn't even see me closely following

he is hollowed out from deep within

we move in very different circles now;

we live through varied; indifferent times

His steps are small and slow; unhurried;

he has no place to go.

my steps are faster; quickly hurrying

I wonder if he even knows

and if he feels me as I pass him by

he shows no trace of recognition;

doesn't question why

He gambled everything we had

he gambled away his life

the stakes were high;

but when the chips were down

he gambled away our love

I spent so long in trying to save him

because he wouldn't save himself

reasoning became so pointless; futile;

he wouldn't fight to spare my health

he sold my art to feed his habit

sold my diamond engagement ring

with sapphires like my bright blue eyes

now clouded when I sing

but what is the definition of addiction

can anyone among us tell me why

I would waste my life in chasing something

that was only born to live so long then die

what is the shape of my heart without him

it lies broken; shattered on the floor

the angels tried to piece it back together again

but it will never be as good as it was before

Once something so very beautiful is broken

there's a fragile weakness that remains

and the glue that once held you altogether

never sets as fast or strong again.

I cannot count the number of times or hours that I have spent tracking and attempting to photograph the Pileated Woodpecker. They are not hard to find as they have an extremely loud knock when pecking for prey. Their call is also very loud and distinctive, often alerting me to their departure from my area. Over the years I have captured a few shots milliseconds before they dash away. Wednesday morning was the exception.

While walking the trails around Loop Island in New Albany, a shadow cut across the trail in front of me just 10-12 feet ahead. The shrill in flight call overhead alerted me to its identity, but experience told me not to get too excited as I assumed it would continue on its way, across the lake and out of range. To my surprise, it landed in a tree only 30-40 feet ahead…in perfect light…and started posing and twisting about as if a supermodel had been reincarnated into this young man. I obliged its apparent need for an impromptu photo shoot until fatigue set I and I had to lower my lens to relax my arms. He then made a quick exit out of sight.

As I resumed my hike in the woods, I took in the crisp clean December air and brilliant blue skies above, a little freaked out about what had just transpired and counting blessings along the way. Within minutes of the last, another shadow broke the stillness of my surroundings. Another male Pileated Woodpecker, maybe the same one, landing a few dozen yards ahead. I remember thinking to myself it the middle of another photo session just how crazy this was, as if I were being sought out. After taking another two-dozen shots, I verbally thanked him and continued on my way. When his shadow passed in front of me for a third time I found myself in one of those “What-the-what is going on here” moments.

What a difference a week can make in a life. You see, exactly one-week prior and to the hour I was being wheeled into the operating room for surgery. It was a no big deal, minor surgery to repair something stupid that I choose to do a few months prior. The surgery was the easy part, sitting still for the next four straight days was maddening.

From an OR table to being stalked by a woodpecker in one week, blessed!

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

“You cannot say to the sun, 'More sun,' or to the rain, 'Less rain.' To a man, geisha can only be half a wife. We are the wives of nightfall. And yet, to learn kindness after so much unkindness, to understand that a little girl with more courage than she knew, would find her prayers were answered, can that not be called happiness? After all these are not the memoirs of an empress, nor of a queen. These are memoirs of another kind.”

I really cannot define the association, but my mind went immediately to the lyrics below from Simon & Garfunkel:

"American Tune"

Many's the time I've been mistaken, and many times confused

Yes and I've often felt forsaken, and certainly misused

Ah but I'm alright, I'm alright, I'm just weary thru my bones

Still you don't expect to be bright and bon-vivant

So far away from home, so far away from home

And I don't know a soul who's not been battered

I don't have a friend who feels at ease

I don't know a dream that's not been shattered or driven to its knees

But it's alright, it's alright, for we live so well, so long

Still, when I think of the road we're traveling on

I wonder what's gone wrong, I can't help it I wonder what's gone wrong

And I dreamed I was dying, I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly

And looking back down at me, smiled reassuringly

And I dreamed I was flying, and high up above my eyes could clearly see

The statue of liberty, sailing away to sea, and I dreamed I was flying

But we come on a ship they called Mayflower

We come on a ship that sailed the moon

We come in the ages' most uncertain hours and sing an American tune

And it's alright, oh it's alright, it's alright, you can be forever blessed

Still tomorrow's gonna be another working day and I'm trying to get some rest

That's all I'm trying, to get some rest

For those who are unfamiliar with this truly great American Tune,

My house is built on hallowed ground and land that was reclaimed from the sea. It suits the essence of me and calms my spirit to walk in my garden knowing that it was left for many years, an abandoned place until the house was built and the stony and sandy ground where nothing much grew except ancient plants; wild flowers that blew in on the wind. Then someone planted trees from all four corners of the earth and plants that should not have survived began to flourish as if the roots of these trees breathed new life into the earth. There have been only a few guardians of this magical place and I am honoured to be the current guardian. At first I tried to plant what I liked; tried to enforce my will on this holy place, but in time I realised something … you cannot force a garden to grow; to bend to your will. A garden evolves slowly over time of it's own accord mostly and we, as guardians, should allow it to guide us. In this way I have found peace and happiness here and I embrace the changes of my ever-evolving garden. I seldom buy anything new to plant. I wait for the winds; I wait for the seasons; I witness the changes and I grow and evolve as a person in much the same way as my garden does. It is a joy to anticipate each new season; each new wind; and to see what appears. There is always something unexpected appearing. Life is full of surprises; of serendipitous moments. I wonder sometimes about these old trees. I think whoever planted them was guided and perhaps the garden welcomed the dappled shade on what once was a desert. Certainly I feel myself sometimes directed to introduce a new species. Perhaps I am guided also by a hand that I cannot fathom. We are not meant to understand everything. If we allow ourselves to just be, we may find, without effort, how our path unfolds with relative ease. I have found this to be the case. All those years of struggle and now I can just let go … it really is that easy to be content.

p.s. I was compelled reluctantly to remove a Laburnum tree that I thought might be harmful to my cats. I had always wanted such a tree with it's beautiful yellow flowers … but in it's place a Forsythia grew with a profusion of yellow flowers. I did not plant it! Magic? Yes, I believe so! : 0)

“We leave our footprints in a place to mingle with the echoes of all that went before; our heartbeats; our rhythm; the patterns of our lives.” - AP

I wander in the wilderness

my garden of delights

a jungle by the turquoise sea

a land so flat; the moon at night

shines down with silvery fingers

and touches the ground with magical spells

and come the breaking dawn of morning

all ills are banished and all is well

the dark and mysterious creatures

who loiter in the dusk

emerge in brilliant sunshine

with all-seeing eyes; an elephant tusk

protrudes and scythes the longest grasses

parts the meadow like the ancient sea

leaving behind a trail of crimson

flowers of sorrel and sweet harmony

reigns here as the King of the Jungle

seeks solace in the afternoon siesta

ignores the urban sounds outside

these walls; these trees; a back-firing Fiesta

alerts the songbirds from their idle rest

they flitter and flutter from tree to tree

and as I lie within the striped hammock

I swing and sing low to the sound of the breeze

a mist arises suddenly; springs up from the sea

settles a cloak; an air of mystery

around the shoulders of myself and the limbs

of the ancient trees as I sip my Pimms

I can barely keep my eyes from closing

the warmth of the air so cloying and deep

I find myself falling gently to the humming of bees

as I lapse now into a soundless sleep

I awake to find the blue sky black

lit by a billion diamonds or more

an infinite guide is laid out before me

the wisdom of ancient celestial stars of yore

some say when we see them

they have already died

long ago before our ancestors

what does this imply

do our eyes deceive us

or are we psychic or perhaps

we are more knowledgeable than we realise

all we need falls easily into our laps

but still we often ignore

the instincts that are given

override them; divide them

dilute them; we're driven

to only see clearly to the end of our noses

we fail to stop often to smell the scent of the roses

take stock; stand still

absorb the nature of all living things

for in this garden I discovered

nature brings happiness and happiness brings

peace of mind; plentiful bounty

the sweetest fruits of the earth

the love that will bind us

circumnavigate the world's girth

here I find every day all that I need

the flora; the fauna; all that set seed

and I've no desire to be anywhere else

as much as I desire to be here

in this garden full of Heaven

there is love; there is goodness that I hold dear

from the humblest of creatures

find the beauty in a fly

sing so loud like a blackbird

view the world through a child's eyes.

There are invitations you simply cannot turn down. Spending a night at 3571m on Jungfraujoch definitely falls into this category.

When my buddy Benjamin Barakat informed me about the invitation to visit the high altitude research station and that we would get access to the restricted areas on the Spinx Observatory, I was really excited. The place has been on top of my wish list for quite a while.

The alpine high altitude environment did not make it an easy shooting. When we arrived in the afternoon, there was snowfall, but the forecast predicted that it would clear during the night. Shortly before sunset the clouds parted, but our high hopes were damped when thick fog rolled in shortly after nightfall.

We nevertheless decided to brave the cold on the science platform of the Spinx Observatory and were finally rewarded with completely clear skies.

"..."I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming," said the

Selfish Giant, as he sat at the window and looked out at his cold

white garden; "I hope there will be a change in the weather."

But the Spring never came, nor the Summer. The Autumn gave golden

fruit to every garden, but to the Giant's garden she gave none.

"He is too selfish," she said. So it was always Winter there, and

the North Wind, and the Hail, and the Frost, and the Snow danced

about through the trees.

One morning the Giant was lying awake in bed when he heard some

lovely music. It sounded so sweet to his ears that he thought it

must be the King's musicians passing by. It was really only a

little linnet singing outside his window, but it was so long since

he had heard a bird sing in his garden that it seemed to him to be

the most beautiful music in the world. Then the Hail stopped

dancing over his head, and the North Wind ceased roaring, and a

delicious perfume came to him through the open casement. "I

believe the Spring has come at last," said the Giant; and he jumped

out of bed and looked out.

What did he see?"

One cannot miss out the Lava monastery when going to Lava. It is built on a four acre piece of land and is home to hundreds of monks who preach their beliefs there.

The monastery is old, built in 1980s and architecturally beautiful. It looks Tibetan in style and has various prayer halls, lawns, sitting areas and a huge Buddha statue. The monastery is well maintained.

Europe - UK - United Kingdom - England - Northumberland - North East of England - Mary's Lighthouse - Whitley Bay - Tyne & Wear Coast - Tidal island linked to mainland by concrete causeway which is submerged at periods of high tide

St Mary's Lighthouse, near Whitley Bay, is on a tidal island which is linked to the mainland by a concrete causeway which is submerged at periods of high tide. The lighthouse and adjacent keepers' cottages were built in 1898. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1984.

Reached between the tides via a short causeway from the car park, St. Mary's has all the fascination of a miniature, part-time island. Visitors can climb the 137 steps inside the tower to the lantern room to enjoy spectacular views along the North East coast of England. If you cannot manage the steps, a live video facility allows you to experience the same panorama at ground level.

One of those spectacular sunrises with fantastic colors. Just dont be fooled by the color of the lighthouse, it is not sunrise colors reflected, it has rather unusual purple color illumination.

The game cannot connect me to EA servers, and Ansel doesn't work as well. So I fiddled with CinTools in the main menu instead. :D

Also, for some reason (I suspect latest Chrome update tho) I can't see pics' thumbnails inside Flickr uploader, so I'm editing tags and titles blindly now. Basically, I can't even see where to click to change the pic which I want to edit description & stuff. Oh, well...

UPD: Looks like, judging from the ALBUM THUMBNAILS I clicked on the right pics. I hope that'd be fixed soon, either on Chrome side, or another way (if, say, it's actually a Flickr problem, or may be smth completely different, I dunno).

As I cannot go outside to make new photos, I have (or should have) plenty of time for processing old photos. These are digitalised slides from my past time. Probably Fuji, but it might also be Kodachrome, I was using both at the time. This was made while we were living in Yaoundé, Cameroon, with my wife and baby daughter.

The pictures were made in the Waza National Park, in Northern Cameroon, a paradise for wildlife fans. This was in May (1986), end of dry season. The water holes had been digged by park wardens, so as to retain water to attract the whole fauna, which was numerous at the time.

Paradise has turned into hell. The whole region is now extremely dangerous, due to Boko Haram sometimes crossing the Nigeria-Cameroon border, to raid the area. Local inhabitants are the first victims of the conflictual situation, both from a security and economic perspective. The region has always been a dry and poor area, but tourism was helping a little bit. I wonder if any European still venture in the region, but I doubt it.

Regarding wildlife, it is fairly difficult in this context to know how the populations are evolving. I found on the internet a 2014 document reporting the elephant population to be stable, but the giraffe decreasing. Unfortunately poaching is likely to have increased with the terrorist trouble.

Please note that EXIF are not representative, since I only edited the camera type and capture date.

As you walk through Paris and especially in the Montsouris Park, one cannot help but notice the blue busts that appear to be rising from under the surface of the water. This art work is known as ‘Where the Tides Ebb and Flow’ created by Pedro Marzorati, an Argentinian artist.

What is the meaning of the work?

This is a commentary on how the water levels in the earth’s sea bodies continue to rise as a result of climate change. The level of submersion of the various sculptures is an indication of the level of impact that global warming is having in different parts of the world. The sequence in which the sculptures are arranged indicates that as time goes by, the human forms will be completely below the water. The use of blue for the sculptures is deliberate and so is the number of sculptures used. The work shows that poetic activism can be just as effective if not more powerful than verbal advocacy. publicdelivery.org/pedro-marzorati-where-the-tides-ebb-an...

We must act against the destruction of our Planet, the first step is to stop electing ignorant politics who doesn't believe in climate change and who want to see the World burn."

Gonna straighten her out

You'll never stop the world from turning

I just want to rest in peace

I can't stop the world from burning

Gonna 'poon the whale

Gonna drain the swamp

It's money to me

Gonna fuck with genes

I am what I am

With their pink and crimson plumage, long legs and necks, and strongly hooked bills, flamingos cannot be mistaken for any other type of bird. These beauties have long fascinated people. An accurate cave painting of a flamingo, found in the south of Spain, dates back to 5,000 B.C.

The flamingo’s pink or reddish color comes from the rich sources of carotenoid pigments in the algae and small crustaceans the birds eat. Caribbean flamingos, a subspecies of greater flamingo, are the brightest, showing their true colors of red, pink, or orange on their legs, bills, and faces.

Flamingos live in lagoons or large, shallow lakes. These bodies of water may be quite salty or caustic, too much so for most other animals. In some lakes, their only animal “neighbors” are algae, diatoms, and small crustaceans. That works in the flamingo’s favor, as the birds dine on these small creatures!

Chilean, Andean, and puna flamingos are found in South America; greater and lesser flamingos live in Africa, with greaters also found in the Middle East; the Caribbean subspecies is native to Mexico, the Caribbean, and the northernmost tip of South America.

Pets cannot give you that sickness. They are innocent creatures, they need your love as much as you need theirs.

Most kennels from animal protection centers are full because of massive abandons of cats and dogs.

I am having a hard time with human nature these days.

Here is a quick post of an image of Snoqualmie Falls from yesterday. A medium runoff due to some of the rain we have had over the past few days. I am sure this will be at a trickle come summer as we have hardly had any snow this winter.

This is a combination of three images (-2,0,+2) merged and tonemapped in Photomatix. I have a client who wants a nice shot of Snoqualmie falls, but did not want the "Painted" look like I normally have in a lot of my images. So I made sure the processing was scaled way back and I pulled back the saturation a bit. I sharpend a little and upped the clarity and increased the contrast a little.

Thank you for your views, comments and faves. I appreciate the time you take looking at my photography and I apologize that I cannot always reciprocate.
