Behind the Locomotives are cars #994363 and #994500. The 994363 is the Train’s Power Car. Built in 1946 by Pullman, it began its life as Great Northern Dining Car #1152. On the GN it was named the “Lake Chelan”. Eventually it was sold to the Louisville and Nashville where it became their #363. Next in 1982 the Seaboard System inherited the car and kept its number in the process. In 1986 the car was passed onto CSX who named it the “Kentucky” and painted it into a variant of the company’s YN1 Paint Scheme. In early 2007 the car was repainted into a Dark Blue Livery to better align with their then new YN3 Scheme. In early 2021 it was repainted into its current B&O Inspired Livery and given its current name. The Car is named for “Champion A. Davis” who was the President of the Atlantic Coast Line between 1942 and 1957. Meanwhile the 994500 is one of the Train’s Two Lounge Cars. Built by the Budd Company in 1948, it started its life on the Chesapeake and Ohio as Diner-Theater Car #1972. The car made up the dining section of a twin-unit diner set that was hooked up with a Lunch Counter Kitchen-Crew car. The 1972 was apart of a 40 car order made by the C&O for intended use on the Chessie, a planned Streamliner that would of operated on a daylight schedule between Washington D.C and Cincinnati, Ohio. Unfortunately mounting financial problems caused by delayed equipment orders along with declining ridership due to the rise of Automotive Travel would lead to the Train’s quiet cancellation in September of 1948. The cars that were delivered for the Train would be sold off to other American Railroads. 10 would even be sold to the Ferrocarriles Argentinos (Argentine Railways) in South America where they were converted to Broad Gauge. The 1972 meanwhile would be sold to the Atlantic Coast Line who numbered it the 5994 and named it the “Fort Myers”. With the ACL the car’s capacity was increased from 52 to 64 and was assigned as Kitchen Unit 129. The car continued service with the Seaboard Coast Line before it was ultimately sold off to the Auto Train Corporation in the early 1970s. In December of 1981 following AT’s Bankruptcy the car was sold to the Delaware Otsego Corporation. At the time the DOC was the holding company for the New York, Susquahanna and Western Railroad in Upstate New York. It was promptly moved onto NY&SW Property and renumbered as the 507. Under their ownership the car was converted from a dining section of a twin-unit diner to its own stand alone diner with its own kitchen. The car would see frequent use with the Railroad’s Steam Excursion Program until its end in 2003. In 2008 CSX acquired the car and had it upgraded in a joint project between the company’s Car Shops at Waycross and West Jacksonville. It was put into service with their Office Car Fleet in 2009. It would receive the B&O treatment in Spring of 2020. The car is named the “John W. Smith” who was the president of the Seaboard Air Line from 1952 until it merged with the Coast Line in 1967. The last ex-CR "Super 7" to remain in service on CSX, and the only one to ever receive YN3 paint, heads west on Q425 at Washington, MA. The 3185 was built as WP 2254 and, along with CSX 4607 (ex-L&N 1254), likely arrived in Springfield off a work train. The 4607 has since been cast off to the Waycross deadline and the 3185 was last known to be roaming the Ohio Central Railroad.
Light from the newly risen sun bounces freely off a CSX coal train facing east at the yards at Huntington, W.Va. From this spot, the train can head north along the Ohio River, or it can go east toward northern Virginia, or it can head south toward North Carolina. It depends on where the coal comes from and where it's going. About once a day, we get a train of Bakken crude oil through here headed for a refinery in Virginia.
