Part of the Freedom Trail, this small historic square offers benches next to the Paul Revere House.

The Navigli are a system of canals and waterways whose construction lasted 7 centuries (from XII to XIX century) that connected the lake Maggiore, the lake Como, the Ticino river and the Po river and also connecting Milan with Switzerland, North Eastern and Western Europe and to the sea and irrigate and productive huge areas. In just 35 years had been built 90 km of waterways and the first canal was realised in the XII century when began the construction of the Naviglio Grande with a system of dams invented by Leonardo Da Vinci in the XV century. (you can still see Leonardo’s Dam along Naviglio Pavese). Then, in 1457, Francesco Sforza, Lord of Milano, ordered the realization of another Naviglio, the Naviglio della Martesana, and in 1482 Ludovico il Moro commissioned Leonardo Da Vinci to plan a system to connect Lake Como to Milan and you can find drafts at the Museum of Navigli. The Famous Duomo di Milano has been build with the Marple coming via these canals. In 1805 Napoleon ordered to complete the Naviglio Pavese used also for trasportation of the Candoglia marble for the construction of the Duomo Cathedral. Then in the second half of the XIX century trains and railways become the first means of transport and the Navigli canals were less used and finally abandoned when cars appeared and only used by industries that polluted waters.

(Conca del Naviglio).

Tolga Convent was founded in 1314 on the left bank of the Volga river, on the place of miraculous appearance of the Tolga Icon of the Mother of God. Against all odds of history, beginning with Mongol Yoke, Tolga Convent emerged from ruins and desolation and nowadays attracts thousands of pilgrims. The convent is located not far from Yaroslavl; on the left bank of the river Volga, at the place of confluence of a small river Tolgobolka (or Tolga) into Volga. White stone walls with high angle towers, cathedrals with multiple heads, glaring golden domes and crosses and a predominating massive bell-tower form one magnificent harmonious structure, captivating eyes of those travelling along Volga. The cedar grove has been planted here in the 16th century to commemorate the miraculous appearance of the icon after fire.

The palace was built as a summer residence of the prominent statesman of Russia, Governor-General of the Novorossiysk Territory, MS. Vorontsova (1782-1856). The palace was designed by the English architect Eduard Blor. In the development of English Romanticism of the first half of the XIX century. a great role was played by the fascination with the monuments of antiquity, their study and restoration. This activity was dedicated to Blor in his youth. The German gardener Carl Kebach supervised the breakdown of the park. Shattered by the principle of the amphitheater, the whole composition of the park contains spatial connections, oriented along the countries of the world and stretching from the base of the amphitheater - "Tea House" on the beach - to all architectural objects of the park, the palace, to all visible and invisible centers of the landscape. Everything is thought out and fixed by the strict logic of the classical plan, hiding under the free picturesque lines of the flower garden.

There are many interesting, aging buildings throughout the historic barrio in Colonia del Sacramento. This older-style lamp along with the cobblestone road instantly transport you back a good hundred years or so. And that's the feeling you have as you walk the streets. Not that you're in modern times, but that you're back in time a bit.

As fun as it can be to imagine how your vacation or travel destination might end up being, it's far better actually being there. While it's hard to live up to imagination, sometimes they will surprise you in unexpected ways. Sometimes they'll be far better than you could have imagined. Other times you will be disappointed. In the end though, when you reflect back on your travel, you will almost certainly have positive memories of how great it was.

I expected Montréal to be quite like Québec City, but The Paris of North America is not visually similar to Paris at all. I quickly realised the nickname comes from the language, the culture, the thriving arts scene and less about the architecture. Paris is compact, petite and walkable, whereas everything in Montréal is big! Big avenues, big ambitions, and big buildings and big suburbs. When the Édifice Sun Life was finished in the 30s, the Beaux-Arts building was the largest in the British Empire. A grandiose building at the heart of the melting pot that is Montréal.

The Rundetaarn, or the Round Tower in English, is a 17th century tower and one of Copenhagen's more popular tourist attractions. Easily accessible today, round and round you go as you walk up its spiral ramp to the top. Originally built as an astronomical observatory, today it's a great place to get a commanding view of the older part of Copenhagen.

In the distance, you can just make out the Øresund Bridge. Flying in/out of Copenhagen, you may notice this bridge seemingly connect the city of Copenhagen to a tiny island with virtually nothing on it. I admit I was perplexed when I saw this, as I couldn't understand why anyone would spend so much money to build a huge bridge to an island of nothing. As it turns out, it's actually the artificial island of Peberholm.

A number of interesting engineering and economic challenges were solved by placing an artificial island that connects the bridge to an underground tunnel, linking Copenhagen in Denmark with Malmo in Sweden. Everything from ship traffic to air traffic and freight train traffic had to balanced to come to the solution.

In the end, you get a bridge that looks like it goes to nowhere from the plane, but in reality provides a link between these two cities. The rest of the views, with its spires piercing the horizon is as beautiful as it is colorful.

Budapest, Hungary. Parliament building.

The Roman Catholic church of St Charles in Gosforth was built in 1911 (replacing an earlier iron-built structure) and is a handsome building with two small west steeples flanking the main facade and a wide cruciform body culminating in a shallow apse. The interior is partially enlivened by marble-cladding, particularly around the sanctuary.

The outstanding features here however are in glass, principally the two large windows that dominate the north and south transepts, the largest windows in the church and both filled with gloriously rich stained glass by Harry Clarke Studios of Dublin and installed in 1945 (long after the death of Clarke himself and most likely designed by his successor Richard King). The south window depicts the Nativity, whilst that to the north represents the Deposition, with Christ's body being removed from the Cross. There is a further window by the same studio in the south nave clerestorey depicting Christ before Pilate, somewhat smaller and sadly less accessible.

This is a thoroughly rewarding church to visit for lovers of stained glass, though it is best to check with the church about access as it isn't always open outside mass times.

I still can't get over these mountains on these small islands meeting the North Atlantic Ocean. Visiting the Faroe Islands isn't just about powerful landscapes in a small area. It's also taking in the small villages that dot the islands. Winding your way through the islands by car, getting out, smelling the fresh air and taking in the beauty.

On the edge of the city of Sevastopol, on a well-protected bay on the Black Sea, is the small harbor town of Balaklava. This quaint sleepy town has an interesting history and is well worth a visit if you are in the Crimea. It is known in history for the "Charge of the Light Brigade", a near-suicidal attack by British cavalry against Russian cannon, which took place 4 km outside the town in 1854.

The town is overlooked by the remains of a Genoese fortress; the Genoese used the port as a staging place for their lucrative trade in slaves and goods. Later the Mongols took it, and the Ottoman Empire took control of it in 1475. In the 1850s the harbor was filled with British troops and ships during the Crimean War.

In Soviet Union built a submarine base into one of the hillsides, and turned the town into one of the most secret of locations during the Cold War era. In 1991 the base was closed and the last submarine left in 1996.

At the suggestion of fellow flickrite 'SemmyTrailer', part of Saturday's big day out encompassed a walk across this soon to be superceded toll bridge at Penrhyn for a few photos. According to local signs, work on replacing this Grade II listed structure is due to start this week whereby a new multi-million pound road/rail bridge will be constructed.

My first memory of using it was back in 1970 when holidaying at Tal-y-bont just north of Barmouth. I'd persuaded mother to take 'us' for a day out to the Ffestiniog Railway and whilst passing along here in our humble Mk 1 Cortina, the driver of a Jaguar yelled out through his open window as we passed 'Mind the paintwork'! Clearly the 1860 built structure isn't really suitable for modern day traffic levels, but there seems to be no shortage of car drivers willing to take their chances and fork out the required 50p to cross. The roadside fencing is littered with smashed mirror glasses!

Here a late afternoon southbound Arriva Trains Wales class 158 DMU is back on terra firma after crossing gingerly.
