Church in Venice that was begun in its original form in 829 (consecrated in 832) as an ecclesiastical structure to house and honour the remains of St. Markthat had been brought from Alexandria. St. Mark thereupon replaced St. Theodore as the patron saint of Venice, and his attribute of a winged lion later became the official symbol of the Venetian Republic. San Marco Basilica, built beside the Palazzo Ducale, or Doges’ Palace, also served as the doge’s. It did not become the cathedral church of Venice until 1807. The first basilica was burned in 976 during a popular revolt against the doge Pietro Candiano IV but was restored under his successor, Doge Domenico Contarini (died about 1070); the present basilica was completed in 1071. The plan is a Greek cross, and the building is surmounted by five domes. The design is distinctly Byzantine, and it is likely that both Byzantine and Italian architects and craftsmen were employed in the construction and decoration. Over the centuries, additions of sculpture, mosaics, and ceremonial objects have increased the church’s richness.
Assumption Cathedral is one of the most ancient cathedrals of Yaroslavl; it had been laid down at the beginning of the 13th century at the order of Prince Konstantin. The Assumption Cathedral was more than once destroyed by fire and then rebuilt; in 1937 it had been blown down and a park was laid out on the place. Nowadays on the upper level of the Volga Embankment you can see the restored cathedral, with its white stone walls and golden domes. The interior of the cathedral is carefully recreated.

When going on a leisure trip, I don't often consider touring industrial factories. Then again, I don't know if most people would consider North Korea a leisure trip. Still, being able to tour a glass factory as part of a vacation is definitely quite unique compared to the usual tourist circuit. Somehow, it just fits right in and works when it comes to North Korea.
Touring the factory I saw everything from glass melting furnaces to panes of glass rolling through the factory like here. There were quality checks along the way to automatically destroy bad panes, as well as some guys sitting at computers monitoring...whatever they monitor.
Having seen photos of a number of abandoned Soviet factories and buildings, I can only imagine what will happen to this place 10, or 20 years from now. Will it still be making glass, or will it one day be mothballed?

The first of the villages I visited in Dogon Country was that of Songo. Like many other villages, it has a number of mud-brick buildings (adobe style), including this mosque. The small pieces of wood sticking out, called toron, are used as scaffolding during the annual repairs made to the structure. All mud-brick structures in Mali require annual repairs to fight off the effects of rain and normal wear and tear.
Getting the walk through the villages slowly, is a good opportunity to see how the people live. It's also, a bit repetitive after a while. There are different types of villages - ones that belong to farmers, fisherman, and so on, but generally there is a lot of resemblances across them. Like driving through suburb after suburb in America, they all blend together eventually. If you've never been to the suburbs though, the first few are probably interesting.

This water village wasn't as deserted as it looks. The kids were largely in school, and the people going about their daily work. Still, it's an interesting layout. With wooden walkways that generally have no railings. I guess it's a good thing alcohol is forbidden so that no one drunkenly falls into the water at night.
Kampong Ayer, located a short boat ride away from mainland Bandar Seri Begawan, was the first time I visited a water village. It's still a bit unique to see an entire village built above the water. It was pretty cool to be walking around but I'm not sure about the tradeoffs. Sure, you avoid cutting down some forest, but the wood is still coming from somewhere, and the water is getting far more polluted due to the increase in boat traffic. A bit of a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation, but perhaps the best solution would be to build-up on land at opposed to all this sprawl.

Originally, a wooden cathedral was built in the Kremlin in 1626, which was called Arkhangelsk. The first stone Assumption Cathedral was built in the 70s and 80s of the XVII century. Less than a hundred years later, it fell into disrepair and was dismantled. The construction of the new cathedral began on May 7, 1762, with the blessing of Bishop Porfiry of Kolomna and Kashira, at the expense of the Tula merchants "from drinking fees with instrument money." The building was erected in two years by May 8, 1764.
The Palazzo Galloni is a vast and complex building. It was the residence of a wealthy bourgeois family of the 17th century. The main building, set aside from the embankment, is preceded by a low building, previously used as a warehouse for activities related to navigation in Naviglio. This is a simple tiled roof, supported by five large arches, of which one in the center leads to the courtyard. The other four large gates through which the carts of vegetables passed were walled up today and fragmented by small doors, balconies and windows.

Amongst those who came to Sri Lanka two hundred years ago to seek their fortunes, was a community of tea planters from Britain, many of whom were Scottish. In fact, it was a Scotsman, Thomas Lipton, who first developed the tea trade in what was then known as Ceylon. The Lipton brand of tea is well known to this day around the world. The early planters left their mark through the names of some of the present day plantations in the Hill Country – for example, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Culloden and Invergordon. They also left their church buildings in Kandy, Haputale and Colombo, which were spiritual homes away from home.
Worship at St. Andrew’s Scots Kirk, in Princes Street, Fort, Colombo, began on 21st October 1842. It was a member congregation of the Presbytery of Ceylon, part of the Church of Scotland, hence the name “Scots Kirk”. The congregation enjoyed good relations with its Presbyterian brothers and sisters in the Dutch Reformed Churches of the city. (The Dutch preceded the British in colonizing Ceylon.) The church experienced good times of growth but had to endure some difficult times especially when one minister departed and another was still to make the arduous sea journey out from Scotland.
Under the ministry of the Rev. Alexander Dunn, the church moved to its new premises at 73 Galle Road, Colpetty, in 1906. The site at Fort was required for other purposes and the city was beginning to spread south through Colpetty. With more than 100 years of history behind this beautiful early 20th century Church, St. Andrew’s has become an iconic building in the heart of the busy city of Colombo. The church building, designed by the Architect Edward Skinner, ARIBA, and built by Walker Sons & Co, with its beautiful stained glass windows, Gothic inspired columns and attractive marbled floor.
